"One last battle before we take the Gym on," Josh gave his team a short pep talk before stepping into the dimly-lit battle chamber. "Mirage, let's get 'em!"
Ashlee's formidable, personal team at the very least managed to drive Yakshas away from Slate City, not doing too much more damage. Beryl's evacuation initiative was a success, getting everyone out of the dangerous areas with miniman casualties. When asked about legendary Pokémon, Ashlee said she'd get back to Beryl on that.
Ashlee returned with a book on the subject, showing her pictures of an azure bird with dominion over ice. It allegedly made its nest in the tallest, coldest mountains of Ageos. Michael of the Dragoons would know more.
After Geoff's team had recovered, he re-entered the main arena, Victoria surprised to see him so soon. "Already? It's only been a few days. In any case, I wish you better luck this time. After the battle, I also want to teach you some riding skills--being able to move as fast as your Pokémon is a vital skill, what with those monstrosities running around.
Josh stepped into the dimly-lit main arena of Twilight Gym, the Leader stepping forward. "As you know by now, there is no such thing as a typical Gym in Ageos," Edward began. "Here, we will have a Double Battle. However, in this battle, the weak are strong, and the strong are weak."
Josh took a deep breath, sending out Mirage and Resheph to start. They had trained for this for a while here, and the proud insect was going to see him through. "What do you mean by that, though?"
"What should we do?" Beryl asked her Pokemon. She had initially breathed a sigh of relief as the green serpent turned north, but not now that she was heading in the same direction -- and it was directly in her path. Traveling over the ground would be too dangerous. She would have to just wait for it to pass.
Or not? she wondered as Mystic caught her eye. The serpentine Pokemon slithered over to her and motioned with his head as if to usher her onto his back. "Fly?" Air travel would seem to be the way to go...but...
Taking a deep breath, Beryl climbed onto her Pokemon's back as he lifted himself up into the air. I need to trust in my Pokemon, and in myself. She fashioned a makeshift harness from one of her Escape Ropes, trying to remember the way that Josh had done it. It wasn't a perfect job, but she hoped it would hold for at least one flight.
When she was finished, the Dragonair slowly flapped his wings until they were level with the low-hanging branches of nearby trees. They traveled slowly at first until they reached the location that Yakshas was ravaging. Then Mystic sped up, being sure to give the legendary serpent a wide berth. Beryl relaxed her knees and whispered her destination to her Pokemon, letting him figure out which way to steer.
It was a great relief when they finally touched down at the Pokemon Center in the middle of Route 11. Beryl unstrapped herself from the harness and checked in at the Center, then sold some of her cheaper items at the Poke Mart. She looked around the Mart, seeing if anyone wished to battle.
Ater the successful Gym battle, Michael's words from long ago came to mind. Resheph could learn a very special technique once she was more experienced. Now was the time. Josh left Twilight City, heading east aboard Resheph. Once the two had crossed the corner of the bay, Swift reappeared in front of them, having found his own way back. "Josh, there are still a couple of things for you to learn before you are a fully-fledged Chosen. Most importantly, you must learn how to handle the Sacred Arte, Extreme Speed."
"I have a promise I made to Michael, one of the strongest Dragoons of Ageos," Josh answered. "It's now time to fulfill that promise. Once we're done in Celeste, we can return to the desert, and we can train together to your heart's content."
"Very well. In that case, hop on my back. I'll take you to Celeste a lot faster." With that, Josh rode eastward, the terrain flying past him.

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
Flying on Mystic's back was easy once Beryl was used to it, and she could get more lessons at Celeste if she wanted to. When she was cleaning out her inventory, she caught a glimpse of a very powerful trainer hanging out behind the Mart.
You see an extremely dangerous-looking Trainer around the corner. You should consider getting out of here.
Will you stay here?
Victoria and Geoff sit down, the Leader explaining the basics of riding Pokémon. "For the most part, leaning left and right controls direction, leaning back and forth controls altitude, and varyance in leg pressure controls speed. The most important part, of course, is trusting your Pokémon and allowing the two of you to act as one."
She offers to let Geoff use a Pidgeot or Meganium for the lessons if he's uncomfortable with using his own 'mons.
Tearing across the land aboard Swift, the two got as far as Route 16 (North). Unfortunately for Josh, the Beast scared off everything in its way.
Geoff considered Stantler, but thought against it. Pidgeot scared him so he climbed on Meganium. "Uhh...giddyup." He said, grabbing a petal, and tapping it's sides. Meganium looked back, bored, and yawned. Flustered, Geoff looked at Victoria, and then back at Meganium. "Come on! Giddyup! Hapaya! MOVE!" He yelled with a mighty kick. Frustrated by the untrained rider, Meganium casually tossed Geoff to the ground. "...Ow." was all he could groan.
Something seemed "off" about the mysterious trainer lurking behind the Poke Mart. After returning to the Mart and warning the cashier, Beryl mounted Mystic again and took to the air for a leisurely flight north to Laurel City...at least, until she arrived at the city proper and saw the extent of the damage that Yakshas's passage had done.
Alighting near the University, Beryl asked to make an appointment with Profs. Caldwell and Haman. She thanked them for their contributions to Wendell's project. Beryl also asked if they knew where she could find or purchase an evolution stone, and whether the Laurel racing track was open for business (or, if not, another location that she could practice her riding and flying).
Unfortunately for Josh, Swift chased away all the Pokémon that would make good sparring partners. The two made it to the foothills of Hallelujah.
Victoria laughed for a couple seconds. "You need to be gentle with your Pokémon--act as one. Try it again." Meganium calmed down and looked at Geoff apologetically.
Beryl could see the Pokémon Mart clerk calling the police as she departed. After arriving in Laurel and making her appointment to talk with the Professors there, she went to the department stores and asked about Evolution Stones. The store had Fire, Water, Thunder, and Leaf Stones in stock at pY 2,100 apiece, and she could put in an order for any other variety at pY 3,000.
Lastly, Beryl headed to the racing track. The upper level of the main track was open for practice, as the Federation decided to delay the season until the problem of the legendary serpents had been dealt with. The lower half of the track remained closed.
Geoff gave a crooked grin. "No, it's my bad. Sorry about that," he said, giving the grass type a gentle rub along it's neck. Once mounted, he gave Meganium a gentle tap while holding onto a petal. A thrill leapt in Geoff's stomach as Meganium plodded forward. "Hey! This is kinda fun!" He said, taking the plant Pokemon in a few laps around the gym, even urging Meganium to go faster...or as fast as the large Pokemon would go, anyways.
Making a trip to the Laurel City dept. store, Beryl purchased a Fire Stone for herself. She waited until she had made the trip to the upper half of the Laurel City racing track to use it on Trooper. The dog Pokemon let out a joyful howl as he evolved. Beryl instinctively leapt onto his back. "Let's go!"
Trooper tore down the track, accelerating as he went. Beryl was unprepared for the sudden lurch that occurred when he skidded around what looked like a gentle corner; if it weren't for the armor on the young Dragoon's legs, they would have suffered a nasty gash. "Faster!" she shouted. The newly evolved Arcanine put on a burst of extreme speed that elicited a gasp from some nearby spectators. With the increased speed, the next turn was even rougher than before. Beryl clung tightly to her Pokemon with both her arms and knees and marveled that she didn't fall off.
With two turns to go, she steered Trooper toward the inside track, using the extra distance from the wall to avoid the hair-raising near-collisions from before. They maintained their speed all the way to the end of a full lap. "That was...great!" Beryl said, sliding off her Pokemon. She tried to hide the disappointment in her voice.
But it's not the same...
After resting up and getting some water for herself and Trooper, Beryl looked around the track for any particularly wealthy-looking racers. With her purse nearly empty, she desperately needed to raise money for Wendell's initiative.

Josh and Swift continued all the way up the snowy mountains, toward Celeste City. When the two arrived, Josh immediately headed for the Gym to talk to Michael about having the remaining Sacred Artes passed down to Resheph, and if any of the Gym's patrons were willing to help train Swift to make him stronger.
At Geoff's command, the Meganium ran at a brisk pace, the air resistance through his hair and fingers one of the most amazing feelings he'd ever felt. "I think you've got the hang of it, Geoff," Victoria complimented him on his progress. "Those commands are known to almost all Pokémon--remember them. Do you want to try flying next?" She gestured toward the giant bird that seemed to be staring at him in anticipation.
Beryl's trip around the easier half of Laurel's Minefield track gave her a great deal of experience that would make learning how to fight as a Dragoon easier. While she was quenching her thirst, a trainer approached her, his racing-bred Ninetales and Luxray right behind him. "I've never seen you around here--you're pretty good. Are you on the circuit? I'm not, but I offer services to people who are."
Swift and Josh arrived in Celeste City and entered Michael's Gym. The Leader came out to see them, blown away by how he looked now, and even more blown away by Swift's presence. "Mind sitting down in my office for a while? We need to talk. You're not in trouble--just the opposite. I want to figure out what's been going on and why Celeste City hasn't been touched by this disaster." He sighed. "Would you mind filling me in about the three serpents as well as about Raikou? I still can't believe I'm standing in front of a Beast!"

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
Beryl introduced herself to Kirk. "I'm not a racer, but I know some guys who are. These two, I suppose, would be my riding Pokemon." She released Mystic alongside Trooper.
"To tell you the truth, I've considered entering the races myself. I hear they pay out well to the top finishers. It's a shame the Federation has decided to close the tracks until the problem of the serpents is dealt with...but I think I know someone who can help." Beryl again made her pitch for Wendell's pet project. After listening to the Breeder's response, Beryl challenged him to a battle -- it would be good practice for both their Pokemon.

After the battle...
Beryl returned to the Pokemon Center to get her team healed up, then asked around to find out if there were anyone in the city who taught riding techniques. Receiving the name of Gym Leader Victoria, she headed to the grassy coliseum to sign up for lessons.
Geoff nodded, uncertainly. He pulled Swablu off of his head, before walking slowly to Pidgeot. Swablu flew in front of Geoff, and started chattering angrily. "Hey, buddy, I know ou want to help, but you're just not-" Suddenly Swablu began to glow, illuminating the area. Swablu, dissolved into a ball of light...one that doubled in size...then tripled...and grew still more. It dimmed once it was a little smaller than Geoff itself, and he got a clear look at his precious Swablu, who had become a majestic Altaria. "-big enough. Okay then." He said, nonplussed, and climbing onto his companion's back. "Now we have liftoff!" Altaria's mighty wings pumped and flapped, gracefully and effortlessly lifting the two into the air. "Okay, buddy, let's do this." He leaned forward, and the two took off. Victoria could see in Geoff's eyes, a mix of fear, and trust in his companion as they began to practice, lift, fall, side to side, picking up speed. The man would never be a racer by any means, but he's at least got the basics to flee if he must.
Josh explained to Michael what happened in the ruins, both with Swift and with the serpents, going into great detail about how he befriended Swift. Afterward, he reiterated his requests, expressing that he had no intention to further evolve Resheph.
As Beryl entered the coliseum that served as the Gym, she noticed Geoff flying on an Altaria, Victoria closely watching him to make sure he was learning the ropes properly. He looked like he was having a blast. "You're a quick learner," she complimented as the two soared high above the arena. The Leader then turned around. "My, my...so many new students of late," she greeted Beryl.
Michael was a bit...bewildered, to say the least. "I find it difficult to believe, but your story doesn't conflict with what's been happening. I feel that we Dragoons are going to be back on the front lines, as our ancestors were centuries ago. Passing on the Sacred Arte Draco Meteor to Resheph as she is now will be a great challenge--I'd like to verify her resolve in combat. I'd also be more than willing to help you train Swift and the rest of your team for the big battle. If Resheph puts forth enough effort, I'll take you to the underground temple where the Arte is passed down." With that, he led Josh to one of the Gym's warmer side arenas. "We can't battle in the main arena because of the cold. We'll have to do it in here. Unfortunately, you are still too weak to battle my personal Pokémon. You'll have to do battle against another team given to be by the Ageos League staff."

A mere ten days after the Mending, a young knight of Valeron and a young ranger of Eos made a discovery that would change Alara forever.
"Hello, Geoff. Didn't expect to see you here. I'm doing pretty well." Beryl introduced herself and her Pokemon to Victoria. "Mystic and I have flown...once. It was out of necessity, to escape a rampaging serpent. I'd sure feel more comfortable if I had a little bit more formal training."
She listened to Victoria explain the basics of direction, altitude, and speed. "Ready to give it a try, Mystic?" The serpentine dragon nodded, then, as if invigorated by the sweet wind blowing through the arena, he began to change shape for the final time. Arms and legs sprouted and the fins at his ears transformed into a pair of vestigial-looking wings on his shoulder blades. The Dragonite flapped his wings in a powerful whoosh that shredded the harness and sent breezes blowing through the arena.
Mystic evolved into Dragonite!
Mystic learned Wing Attack!
Beryl settled in on her Dragonite, giving herself time to adjust to the creature's broader back. With a few gentle flaps, they achieved liftoff. As Victoria called out instructions, Beryl practiced the basics of ascending, descending, and flying around in different directions. "Good work!" Victoria said. "You're starting to get the hang of it. Now come back down and let's try with your Arcanine."
Smiling, Beryl motioned for Mystic to land. She hauled herself onto Trooper and immediately kicked him into Extremespeed, charging down the long lane of the arena. Beryl tried to apply more speed as she squeezed her knees together, then leaned sharply to the right. Rather than change direction, though, the Arcanine slowed his speed, then headed around the curve of the arena in Beryl's chosen direction. She wheeled Trooper around to Victoria and dismounted. "Why isn't he listening? I'm sure I was doing everything right. When I was riding...um...a really strong Pokemon with my friend Josh, it would turn instantly whenever he asked it to." And it was faster, too, but that didn't really matter at this point.
Beryl also asked Victoria if she, as a Flying-type master, knew anything about the Pokemon Articuno. "So far, all I know is that it's a blue-colored bird that lives in the snowy mountains. And it's strong. Maybe even strong enough to beat Yakshas, the serpent that poked holes all over this city."

Geoff's ears perked up. "Wait, Articuno? I was just reading up on him. From what I read, there's not many places he could be...Zamer Crevasse seemed like a possibility." He loked to Victoria. "I was thinking along the same lines. If se could appeal to him, maybe...just maybe he might be able to turn the tides against those...things out there."
"Zamer Crevasse? That sounds like a distinct possibility," Beryl said. "I'm only really familiar with the area around the Ice Rock. There's got to be plenty of peaks and valleys that remain largely unexplored. It could be in any of them."
Geoff's ears perked up. "Wait, Articuno? I was just reading up on him. From what I read, there's not many places he could be...Zamer Crevasse seemed like a possibility." He loked to Victoria. After putting Victoria's information together with yours, it would seem that all roads lead to the Hallelujah Plateau in general, specifically the area around Celeste City. After having taken riding lessons, it would seem their bonds with Altaria, Mystic, and Trooper deepened significantly. All three of them are awarded 3 exp points.
OOC: Does Victoria have any advice for Beryl regarding her frustration that Arcanine, in your words, "can't turn worth a damn"?
Also, remind me whether Piloswine needs to learn an additional evolution trigger, or just Ancientpower, to be able to evolve into Mamoswine.
"It seems like it," Beryl responded to Geoff. "Perhaps the Ageos Spirituality Association has some ancient texts that I missed the last time I was in their research laboratory. We won't be able to get all the way over to the city by nightfall, though. If it's all right with you, I'm going to make a pit stop in the mountains and do some training. It's been far too long since I've had a good hike."
If Geoff agrees, Beryl will hike to the eastern edge of Route 12 and look for Pokemon.
Geoff nodded his assent. "Sounds like a plan. Could use a bit of time with Altaria, getting used to him." He said, following, similarly looking for Pokemon.
