The arena is a giant pit in the center of a massive cavern. Stadium style seating extends from the lip of the pit, and the area is constantly filled to the brim with people watching the spectacle of brutal combat. The pit itself is an open area with several man placed boulders of varying sizes to use for cover.
Roshem found himself ushered into the arena. The crowd went silent and he saw the gate on the other side of the arena open. A large warg stepped through the gate and eyed the small man warily for a moment before charging him at full speed.
Roshem followed his first instinct, and ran to the relative shelter of the nearest rock. The immediacy of the situation brought his heart to a pounding, and he began pacing his breathing to bring it under control. He summoned into being a Desert Oil Flail as he spared a moment to collect himself.
The boulder he found himself behind was a round shaped thing only barely taller than himself. He heard snarling and the sound of padded footsteps as the warg closed the gap. The thing was likely coming upon the rock now.
His thoughts collected, Roshem sprung out from behind the rock, his moves immediate as if practiced in advance. He swung around the rock in a slightly wide arc, his eyes catching the beast as quick as they could. Once locked on, he flicked a hand in the air, casting Dirty Trick to flick the arena's dirt into the warg's eyes. Not sparing a moment, he began spinning his flail in the beasts direction, flinging burning oil at its face.
The warg didn't stop when the dust hit him in the eyes but instead surged forward blindly. The oil splashed onto the right side of its face singing the fur and exposing blistered skin. The giant canine would likely slam into Roshem in its blinded rush.
Roshem teetered to a side to avoid the blinded and burnt beast, his body swaying unsteadily but with enough talent to keep him from falling over. He dismissed the flail and replaced it with a kusarigama, and if he had enough time before the beast reared to turn on him, spun and flung the chain to sink it's blade into the warg's back.
The beast spun around and dodged the overhead swing by hopping to the right and lunging forward maw open in an aimed attack this time. The beast going for the small man's face.
Roshem dropped and tumbled away, or under the beast if it left him the room to do so. This time he replaced his weapon with a stone kopesh, freshly drawn from the ground below him, and waited for the war in a crouched, poised stance.
Roshem found that the beast was standing four feet from him staring him in the eye snarling. It seemed it was trying a new tactic than the simple rush. He could see the predator evaluating him furiously.
Roshem tried a new tactic as well, this time him charging the beast, summoning a small cloud of dragonflies to harass the its face as he went for a strike to the throat.
The warg snapped at the dragonflies as it moved inside the swing, the sword bit into its shoulder instead, but the monster's jaw was now closing in on his own left shoulder.
Roshem swayed out of the way, probably not enough to avoid the bite, but enough to keep it from being lethal. As he did, he pulled his sword out from the warg's shoulder, keeping a pressure on it to have it tear through as much flesh as possible in its exit.
Blood sprayed from the wound as the sword sliced out of the shoulder, leaving a deep gash. The jaws of the monster closed on his left arm as he swayed, he felt the teeth crush at his bicep as his skin tore open.
Indescribable pain poured through the man, and he dropped to his knees. His capacity for thought was fading fast, but instinct granted him the good fortune of using his position to aim another strike at the warg's throat, hopfully delivering a fatal blow.
The sword slid instead into the thing's shoulder again, but the strike caused it to release it's grip, through the pain Roshem could see the warg's left leg barely still attached to its body. And blood oozed from the bite mark on his arm.
His blade sliced neatly across the left side of the monster's neck spurting blood out. The beast wasn't quite done trying to kill the man yet, the beast lunged forward in one last attempt, but it's its aim was off and it slammed into his back instead of biting him. The two tumbled to the ground, the warg weighing him down Roshem felt its breath on his cheek and its blood flowing into his back.
Roshem was now in a helpless position, capable of nothing other than hoping the wound in the warg's neck was deep enough to kill it before it killed him.
The thing snapped at his cheek as it died. It heaved a final breath and slid slightly off of him. The gate that he entered through opened and healers waited for him at its mouth.
Poor Roshem, it seemed that the healers would let him die there if he wanted. (Winners walk out on their own in the pits) The crowd was completely silent, apparently waiting in anticipation to see if the small man was alive.
As he pushed himself out from under the dead warg the crowd began to cheer wildly. Only growing louder as he finally made it through the gates. The old healer cast heal on him, checking him over.
