**After the last stone finishes the book begins to glow.**
The last question of this trial has been asked.
You will now be returned to the entrance.
Dr. Smalls and Co pick up the ordered histories as the book glows with power. Bits of air light up as the room prepares itself for one last...
*FLASH*
The group is back in the entrance cave.
Those who ordered one gain the following:
Chronicler - A magic book detailing the history of the person it was written for. Unlike the non-magical texts in the water lock area, this book continues to expand and update itself with the original owner's tale till the day they die. Or possibly beyond it, if their ghost does anything page worthy.
The design, narration style, actual titles, etc of the books are customized from person to person to fit their desires [describe it how you want]. The design/name can even change over extended periods of time (not fast enough to be used during a task/quest/etc). The book will not lie.
Dr. Smalls - "Indeed it was! Well, I believe I should be paying you now. I have a few other things as well you might be interested in.. they weren't really the sort of things we could make use of in the middle of the trials I'm afraid."
LOOT – Each PC gets 120g, 50lp, and a Soulstone. There are only 5 non-sister stones though, so Laghairt, Olus, Kage, Ryot, and Laz have first pick [even with barding].
Gold:1lp for 2 gold.
Extra Stuff From Smalls
Prism Rock - A fused pile of innumerable crystals, including each of the known Lutharin varieties. When imbued into an item, that item gains the effects of an imbue of a randomly chosen art that is then prismed to another randomly chosen art. Each other enchantment on the item is likewise prisimed [each one being decided separately]. This does not effect the base abilities of the item, and it can be used on LSS items. 15LP, 3/4 available. Max 2 per person.
Ghoul Jasper - A twisted, shadowy Jasper that looks like it is filled with bleeding veins (it is not). When imbued into an item, that item gains a twisted jasper imbue. Each other enchantment on the item is likewise perverted with ill intent, becoming a hateful mockery of its original form. This does not effect the base abilities of the item, and it can be used on LSS items. 30Lp, 1/2 available
Noble Jasper - A beautiful piece of Jasper that looks like it is crisscrossed with veins of silver and gold. When imbued into an item, that item gains a more an unusually kind sort jasper imbue. Each other enchantment on the item is likewise engulfed with good will, becoming more heroic and benevolant versions of their former selves. This does not effect the base abilties of the item, and it can be used on LSS items. 30Lp, 1/2 available
Ritual of the Savior - A scroll made of some strange bluish material detailing how to use the material along with a pure-arted Lutharin crystal to form a pact with a guardian spirit, granting the user a powerful summon that will self-cast itself if the user is helpless and unable to defend themselves. The summon will remain until the user is safe [or dead]. The exact nature of the summon depends on the art of the crystal, the location the ritual is performed, and the inner spirit of the user. The user cannot cast the summon on their own. The scroll and the crystal are consumed by the ritual. 20LP, 1/3 Available, 1 per person.
Rite of Murders – A scroll made of some strange reddish material detailing how to use the material to perform a <flawed> ritual designed to bring an army of crows under the user's command. It doesn't do actually that. Oh, you'll be able to will all the of crows in the area to congregate in your vicinity. But the crows just sort of laze around. They won't even come if its dangerous or if you repeatedly abuse them. Crows remember that sort of thing. The scroll is consumed during the rite. 10LP, 0 Available.
Oathen Heart - A knarled bit of wood that looks suspiciously like a human heart. Becomes a clear crystal when an oath is made. Upon the fulfillment of the oath the crystal shatters; its power flowing into the oathmaker to grant them a special ability. The nature and strength of the power depend on the oath and the difficulty of completing it. Note: The difficulty is determined after the fact I.E. how difficult the oath actually ended up being to fulfill. 35LP, 0 Available
BAG LOOT
20LP - Empty Voidpack ??LP - Machinist's pistol 10Lp – Lesser Bandage 5lp - Collapsible, lockable ironwood 10' poll. 3lp - Large Misc (Stone Furniture, rope+grappling hooks, tents, non-magical medicinal bag, etc) 1lp - 3x Small Misc (Stone dinnerware, bags of dice, goggles, etc) 10LP - Underwater bodysuits from the bag. (Made of a chitin-like material, self-repairing and slight temperature altering abilities.) 5LP - Partial underwater gear (swim trunks, bikinis, etc. Otherwise as full suits.)
STUFF LEFT OVER FROM CITY LOOT
Umbrella Lance – 15 LP – One available - A large steel jousting lance whose thicker middle section is capable of magically opening up like an umbrella. The umbrella is magically reinforced by force magics, and the base of the lance can be commanded to extend itself by up to 3’ – perfect for pushing a foe back or a day at the beach. The tip of the lance is unusually sharp and deadly (for a jousting lance). Graveplats – 15 LP – One Available - A pair of boots crafted from leather and bone whose outer soles consist of a pile of crushed bones mixed with mummified flesh. The outer sole can be commanded to expand, the bones and flesh forming structural supports as the boots are pushed upward. The boots can be raised as much as 6’ into the air.
Chainmail Serape – 65LP – One Available - A long Steel Chainmail Serape that flows slightly beneath the knees enchanted with Chameleon and Sapphire imbues. Has the power to flow dramatically in the wind even when there is no wind and is far lighter than it should be.
Skeletal Assistant – 35LP – One Available - A jewel-encrusted Greel Skeleton that obeys the commands of whoever wears the stone amulet it is bound to.
Meteor Balls – 10 LP – No Limit - Iron Balls that speed up and burst into flame when thrown at a target. Each ball is useable once per encounter. ,
Flameshaper’s Ring – 25 LP – One Available - A Dragonbone Ring inscribed with depictions of swirling flames. It allows the wearer to flow and shape fire within 1' of the ring. It does not create fire, only controls it.
SOUL STONES
Each PC can take a single enhanced soulstone (there are only 5, but Misty and Allona will forgo taking one). Each soulstone can communicate with the person that holds them and, if imbued into an item, can posses that item giving it something akin to an enlightened animation in addition to granting it a power based on the soul's personality, life, and desires. The souls can choose to pass away whenever the item it is imbued into or the gem is broken, removing the enchantment. However, only Kristopher has any real desire to do that and Kaia actively desires to stick around. Some souls are more obedient than others.
Histories of the dead souls:
Kaia Alliel
The youngest of five, Kaia grew up poor and with little guidance. She hated it. She hated everything. She hated being so.. ignorable..so..unimportant. She would often go to the unmarked graves and glare at them under the light of the falling sun. Graves that belonged to people easily forgotten. She wasn't going to be one of them. She just couldn't.
As the girl entered womanhood her ambition only grew, until at the age of 19 let a rather suave young man convince her that she should join him and his friends on an adventure. The group had found the entrance to the trials in a half-submerged cavern facing the seas, the men having managed to learn just enough about it to dream. A book of knowledge! Whatever they wanted to ask!
The fools – and most of them were fools – took the first challenge as a celebratory prelude to their good fortune. Over half died in less than a minute. The others soon followed; only Kaia and the ringleader responsible for the fiasco had the wits and skills to make any headway in the tests. Although the book doesn't say exactly what happened in the end (the histories rarely do), its heavily implied she was simply overwhelmed in the dead city room. Her death was quick but far from painless.
Gradela Ryach-Leen
Gradela's story is a simple one. She grew up in her tribe, showed promise, and was taught in the physical arts. As part of the brotherhood of wealth, she felt adventuring would be the ideal way to use her natural skills to further the tribe's goals. Along the way she learned she had a great talent for magic, voraciously consuming any new knowledge of the sort when she could find it but not to the extent that it interfered with her duty.
She entered the trials knowing the dangers. Her group was not foolhardy, nor was it particularly dysfunctional. They simply walked too far down the wrong hallway based off a well-reasoned, yet ultimately wrong, interpretation of a riddle.
Burt Thoslerod
Burt was born a peasant. He liked being a peasant! Oh, sure, he would have loved being a wealthier peasant – eating every meal and all that – but all in all he liked the peasant life. But then came that fateful day he casted a raw spell in the presence of a local lord. He was “hired” immediately; the lord had need for a new earthmage.
Burt hated his new life. He may have had his meals (and good lord they were delicious) and decent wine, but the lord was an utter terror. Not to mention the other servants looked down on him. Was it because he didn't bathe enough? He never knew (The book notes he did, in fact, insult the senses in more way than one). Physical labor had been relaxing in its own way, a way the proper life certainly wasn't. Still, Burt struggled to please his new master. What would mother think if he passed up this chance? Not anything good, that's for sure.
When lord Dremodius entered the trials, Burt was among his retinue. There were no survivors.
Craban Dremodius
Are you familiar with that tired cliché? The self-absorbed servant-beating jerk noble? This guy. Snooty, fussy, snide, you name it he was it. He'd probably kick puppies if they didn't have the good sense to stay away. Ah, who are we kidding? He'd order someone else to do it. The only thing he ever did himself was learn the fighting arts; there was a certain appeal to it he just couldn't put his finger on. He even went so far as to secretly participate in numerous fighting tournaments – many of which he himself funded had under false names.
Craben sought the book for personal glory, but his team of servants simply couldn't bear the weight of the man's ego. There were no survivors.
Kristopher Mesakring
Kristopher had lead a rather normal life for a major player in the predecessor of forceball. He was a bit loose with his wealth, but he always had more. Even after he retired he'd still have some deals he had ironed out, after all.. and then the scandal came. His career was over, his deals forgotten, and a great many people he owed decided now was the time to collect.
He entered the trials out of desperation. Either he'd find a way out of his predicament, or he'd die trying. He did the later. His final wish as he lay dying was for the collectors to leave his family alone. Please let this be payment enough...
Laghairt takes Kristopher Mesakring's Soul Stone, a Noble Jasper, a Collapsible, lockable ironwood 10' poll, and 30 gold. After speaking a bit with the man in the stone, Laghairt easily breaks the rock, freeing the spirit to pass on.
**Ryot took Crabans crystal, the darker soul and just ironically the lesser of two evils to bind, then gets to writing a piece about this insanity before he finished looting.**
Bane's Reading Suggestions David Eddings: The Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium and Tamuli Series. The Redemption of Althalus Jim Butcher: The Codex Alera Series
Hymn of Contemplation - A haunting song that causes those who hear it (including the singer) to recall and ponder the various events of their life and the choices they have made. Besides being distracting the song has a tendency to prompt new insights.
The Tortured Hopeless Wail - A single melodious note of concentrated nihilism and misery that just seems to go on forever. A single target that listens to it is greatly distressed, with already worried targets breaking out into tears, possibly hurling, etc. The Wail can only be maintained for a up to three posts at a time, after which point the singer must rest their voice for twice as many posts.
The Ogofta spun the Lavaforge Pole between his hands and then planted it in the ground.
Laghairt - I've got a little over enough to fund a Weapon Augmentation from the Brotherhood. My first plan is to stop by the Black Bear Tavern in Epicrin to get one for this.
Laghairt and Gigan headed back toward the city after saying farewell to the others.
Olus walks around thanking everyone for the good time, and saying his farewells. After he has spoken to each of them in turn he leaves making his way back to civilization, wondering what this life has in store for him next, and pondering the cryptic words of the book.

**With the distribution of loot and <at least as far as the Dr. knows> the giving of souls to those who will help them, the group sets off down the tunnel out of the cave. They don't get very far, however, before they notice something rather odd on the ground.**
If you are a friend of Golan Trevize
Never mind, we're good.
Golan's fine, we were gonna fake it anyhow.
Have a nice day.
Dr. Smalls - "Well. I guess ol' Snives thinks he has a full proof plan to find the compass."
**Esyllt strokes her chin at the thought.**
Esyllt - "I never heard of it before today."
Dr. Smalls - "It was mostly forgotten until I unearthed some records a decade and a half ago. Snives thought I was being a fool, but he's certainly hunting for it now. I bet his team of mercenaries was hired for that exact purpose."
Mr. Plum - "It certainly has started quite a buzz among our fellows. Perhaps I shou-"
Dr. Smalls - "Nonsense! You heard what the book said old friend. Go get her!"
**The smiling Mr. Plum lets the matter drop, possibly forever. The group continues down the tunnel, their path only slowed by Tratorius suddenly walking in from the entrance. He must have snuck off during the looting.**
Tratrious - "My uncle has been trying to contact me for over a day. It must have been disrupted by the book. I'll meet up with you later."
**He vanishes.**
Misty - "His uncle?"
Dr. Smalls - "Yes. I believe he's ill? Never met the man myself, apparently he's obsessed with being mysterious. Even changed his name to it."
Misty - ".. Mysterious?"
Mr. Plum - "Uncle Mysterious is what Tratorius tends to call him."
The group finally exits the tunnel, the stars shining in the night sky.
Dr. Smalls - "Ah, a perfect finish."
**The Dr. stands there for a bit as Esyllt slowly walks out into the clearing, crosses the grass, and puts her hand on a tree.**
About that time, Laghairt and Gigan arrive back at the entrance to the cave.
Laghairt - Oh, hey Dr. Smalls, I forgot to tell you this before I left, if you need help on any more adventures, Gigan and I would honored to be amongst your crew.
It truly has been a memorable journey. I am glad that your sister and you are now safe Esyllt. If you ever need my help, or Kaia's for that matter, I would be happy to assist. With that he bowed and left.
Olus having already said his good byes walked over to Dr. Smalls, "The same goes for us, Doctor! If your search for the compass turns out to be half as interesting as this was then you can definitely count us in!"
Go ahead and run, you'll only die tired.
