Cek - We did learn a few things after you left to ask around the city gates. The thieves didn't really communicate during the attack and headed right for the carriage which contained something in a chest, which makes it seem that they knew where what they were after was located before the heist. According to the stablehand we spoke to, the people that would know what was in that carriage were whoever at the spire brought it down, and most likely whoever was going to take it where it it was supposed to go.
