Nervada - "Already filled the spot, eh? Well, no matter. By the way, if you ever plan on holding another trip look me up! You guys have the best trips."
The group rattled off their names, making it hard for Juris to catch whether they were giving first, last or nicknames. The twins seemed to be Lana and Dana. The others were Gina in red, Florence in blue, Gem in tan and Dizzy in gold. The boys were Jack, Jonah and Josiah in blue, black and grey. The silk clad boy was Dawson.
Juris - It's a pleasure to meet all of you. For class today, I believe the best thing to do is for me to learn where you are all at in your studies. What were the last few things that Miss Flora spoke to you about regarding Magical Ethics?
Juris - Ah, that is a good question. Brings to light a few different problems and possible solutions, which of course all depend on the circumstances. I have another question for you all, have any of you been allowed to learn any of the basic spells yet?
Meanwhile, Kumiko had entered the academy and paid 300 gold to harness the full might of her potioning potential and then heads out in search of adventure.
Juris - What Dawson says is very true Jack. Even spells meant for helping others can be used for purposes most foul. Even a spell meant for healing can be used by a cruel and yet still creative individual to cause harm. Still however, is the importance of that question, is it okay to heal someone who fears magic? Jack, I think we already know your opinion, but I'd like for you to think of why it might not be the best idea to use magic to heal someone who has been injured that has that fear. As soon as you've thought of anything that makes any sense to you on the matter, I'd like your answer. While Jack thinks on that, I'd like to know the rest of your basic opinions on the matter.
Juris - Calm down. Jack, being afraid of magic does not make you any less intelligent. Magic is a powerful tool that in the hands of a powerful person can be used to create great things for everyone or can be used to cause a living nightmare for others. Even if you are not so afraid of it that you have no problem watching others use it and you yourself can use it without issues, you should never forget that it can be a truly terrifying thing to behold. Not all cases of healing have to be life and death situations. Situations that are life and death would alter the question from, "Is it right to heal someone who fears magic?" to "Is it right to use magic to keep someone who fears magic from dying?" which is a much simpler question. So Jack, if someone were to have a broken arm but were afraid of magic due to not understanding it or even because they had had very bad experiences in the past with magic, would you using magic instead of an alternative healing method be the right thing to do in your opinion?
Juris - Okay, so it seems that we're getting somewhere with this discussion. So who else here thinks that other methods should be used before magic to heal someone who is in no immediate danger of dying or losing a limb if that someone is afraid of magic? I'd like for an explanation of why you think that as well. Those who think the opposite, I'd like the reasoning behind your opinion too.
Most of the class seemed to be swaying towards the idea of abstaining if someone feared them...
Dawson- What if by healing them you could assuage their fear? Is it right to let someone continue fearing magic if you can show them the good in it?
... the class was split again. The boys seemed to be in favour of healing given the new argument, whereas the girls seemed offended by the idea that someone's fears were anyone else's business. No-one seemed to notice Dawson's comment was in opposition to his previous statement that fear of magic was justified.
Juris - Interesting point Dawson. It seems that you've been thinking hard on this subject. Okay, so let's say that you are in the position to do such a thing. What would be the first thing you would do Dawson? What about you Jack? And you as well Gina?
Juris - That's a good first step Dawson. If any of you ever find yourself in a position like this one, where the person you're dealing with is able to communicate with you, you should always try asking them how they feel about what you might have to do. However if someone is dying or without quick healing might end up permanently disabled, I feel that you should do what you feel is best at that moment. The same applies to a situation where communication of any sort is impossible. When unsure on what to do in a serious situation, ones first reaction tends to usually be their first reaction for a good reason.
Juris - Now that you've all had a chance to think about the question with a few different perspectives than your own being argued for and against, is it right to heal someone who fears magic? I'd like all of you to answer what you truthfully think and feel. No explanation needed this time, just your honest answers.
Juris - Okay then. I've been asking you all a lot of questions, even though they all have revolved around basically the same issue. Do any of you have anything you'd like to ask me in return?
Juris - That's an even more complicated question. I'd say that in most cases, the correct answer to that depends upon if you are hurting, tricking, cheating, or deceiving someone else with your magic to make money. I'll give you an example of someone that uses their magic as a way to make a living that isn't so simple to judge, myself. I'm a Dual Mage specializing in both Earth and Storm spells, specifically the combination of Pummel and Spark. This has given me the gift of the spell, Lightning Gloves.
Both of Juris's hands turned into stone that was then covered by an additional layer of stone. The stone crackled with electrical sparks.
Juris - As you can guess from its component parts, this spell is best suited for combat. As an Arbiter, I make most of my gold from bringing in bounties and protecting others from people that would cause them harm in one way or another. This means that I do of course have to fight against people sometimes, during which I will use any of the spells or other magics that I have at my disposal to bring them down. I however always try my best not to cause the person I am in a physical conflict with any more injury than is necessary to be able to safely take them in. Would you say that what I do is right or wrong Gem?
Gem- It seems alright. But what if you could... say, charge crystals with magic to make them more powerful. Would it be okay to charge people for that kind of thing?
Nervada - "So! I hear your looking for an magical ethics teacher?"

Come on and check it out. You know you want to.
Jack- Which is a stupid question because why would anyone be afraid of magic to begin with?
Dawson- Because some mages are cruel, Jack.
Come on and check it out. You know you want to.
Come on and check it out. You know you want to.
Gina- You're stupid.
Come on and check it out. You know you want to.
Jack- Maybe they'd be better off rubbing herbs on it, no good helping someone if they freak out instead.
Jonah- Jack changed his opinion on something. That's a change.
Come on and check it out. You know you want to.

Dawson- Ask them.
