Yeah, but the old way makes it easier to get significantly powerful creatures.
True, in some respects, but also makes it too easy at later levels to get just about anything. As this is a Beta test, we are wanting to simply try it out and compare it to the old ruling, just to see which is better in action instead of just looking good on paper.
Yeah, but the old way makes it easier to get significantly powerful creatures.
If you think about that though, all it takes is one smart player to put all their points into conjuration as fast as possible so they can get said powerful creature under the way the rules were originally written:
At First level I choose to be a Conjurer of a color. I have 4 points and I put all 4 into them. The first three puts me at Experienced with the one remaining starting me off at Master. Basically I can now go through at 1st level and find any creature that has basic big stats and is at a mana cost that is as easy to pay for as possible.
So then a way to fix this would be to ban certain undercosted but powerful creatures which might seem like a good idea but will be less appealing to make you want to dabble in conjuration because if your just going to get average creatures at average costs then your better off just choosing 1/1's for one mana or just become a combat trained planeswalker. You'd basically see players who just fight in hand to hand combat using 1/1's as a distraction or as to get an extra point of damage in. That's not as much fun as what there doing with this:

Honestly I like this change a little more. It means you can still get "good" creatures but you still have to put the effort into it which makes saving points more appealing. Options are always a good thing, especially when your given 2 points, and want to just use one of those points and bank the other for later.
Name: Arkantos, the Hunter,
Plane of origin: Zendikar
Race: 3/4 Human 1/4 Elf
Size: 6' 1" 124lbs/
Appearance: Very Strong despite his thinner stature. He also is very agile and can do incredible leaps and fit trough small spaces. He has a Dark Navy Blue Woolen Shirt that comes down to his elbows. On top of that he has a Very Dark Brown almost Black Leather Vest covered in pockets that looks kind of charred. He wears Trousers, Belt, and Boots that go a quarter way up his shin made of a similar material. He has thick dark navy blue woolen socks that can't be seen because their below his boots. He wears 2 forearm bracers made of double layers of that leather with metal studs attached. He also carries a Blue Steel Longsword with a small diamond in the middle that glows red occasional and a charred leather handle and sheath. There are also 2 throwing knives in his vest. He also carries a small lightish brown cloth satchel. He carries some unknown animal's jerky, a loaf of bread, a water skin, some Silver Coins, and a blanket in the satchel.
Color: Red
Abilities: Conjuration Learned (Kiln Fiend), Damage Learned (Fire), Combat Training Experienced
Bio: He was born in the mountains of Zendikar with his Human Dad, Grandpas and one Grandma. His mother was a half-elf and his other grandma was a elf. They mainly lived off the land. Him and his Dad hunted animals and learned how to preserve their flesh and skin for using later. His Grandpas Farmed a small Garden and his Mother and Grandmother Weaved Cloth and did the household chores. One Day on a hunting trip Arkantos and his Dad came across a pride of Kil Fiends. They quickly shot 2 of them down and the rest fled. When they got to the Carcasses they found a cub. Arkantos wanted to keep it and his father finally agreed to let him have it. After several months the Kiln Fiend was nearly fully grown. Then about a week later some men came to his house and demanded money, supplies, and Grandma, the elf. Arkantos and his Father both drew their swords, but as they did so the intruders pulled crossbows from behind their backs and shot at them. Time seemed to slow down for Arkantos as he raised a open palm to the oncoming bolt and shot a wall of fire at the intruders. The fire deflected all the bolts back and killed a few intruders. Then the leader of the intruders raised his palm in a similar fashion and a bolt of pure energy shot out and slammed into Arkantos and engulfed him in energy. This energy swirled around him and leaked into his body damaging his insides. Finally, as Arkantos was about to be disintegrated something in him sprung to life. Then he felt darkness then a cold stabbing sensation and he smelt the sent of leaves and bacon.
We could put a cap where you can only half your ability points go into conjuration.
But if I'm going to put one point in it anyway then why bothering putting a cap? Plus then we'll have to put a cap on other abilities if soemone figures out how to make them stronger. It'll just seem...odd and out of place. =/
Come to think of it...was it ever decided if creature attacks and abilities require attack rolls? Because if not, I can have unlimited Zap by re-summoning and sacrificing Mogg Fanatic over and over... It wouldn't really make sense to tie a creature ability's to-hit to its p/t though.
Burstinatrix and myself have had a discussion that was brought up because of my character, Quinne(currently a squirrel chasing bacon).
We are wanting to try out a different ruling for Conjuration.
Old Rule:
1:2:3 [repeatable 2:2:3]
Once mastered, new tiers of conjuration may still be purchased at the repeatable price. This means that once you have spent 6 total ability points, and mastered conjuration, you may then purchase another learned tier gaining another creature to be cast at the learned tier's cost.
New rule, in layman's terms:
For each point you put into Conjuration, you get a new creature. When you reach a certain amount of points, you can choose from the next rarity, such like this:
1 point = Common
3 points = Common or uncommon
6 points = Common, uncommon or rare
12 points = Common, uncommon, rare or mythic rare
What do you guys think? It will cause some revamping or your abilities, i'm sure, it did mine.
I'll change my character. I'm doing this because I plan to make Cryffyl a 'Master Conjurer" who uses changelings for combat, sending messages, even giving them the same appearance as him so his other 'bodies' can preform tasks at the same time.
I was planning to make my conjuration skills static, focusing the level ups on other abilities instead. As long as other abilities' requirements do not increase or nerfed, I'm agreeing with the revamp.
Yes. Do we automatically start with 12 in the pool or do we gain it over time? Also, how do we gain more and how fast do we gain it?
You start out with a mana pool that can hold twelve mana. Each time you level up, the number of mana your mana pool can hold increases by two. If you're a level two planeswalker, you can hold fourteen mana in your mana pool. If you're a level three planeswalker, you can hold sixteen mana in your mana pool. Etc., etc.

Any other questions?
That... Didn't answer my question. I'm not asking how big the pool is, I'm asking how much mana we start with. Do I, right now, have 12 white mana in my pool or do I gain is over time? Also, do we gain more or do we have to wait until we level?

Your mana pool's full right now. You only lose mana when you do things that would cause it to lose mana, and your mana pool will only ever be empty if you're in a quest/battle/etc., because it refills itself once you leave that quest/battle/etc.

I noticed that the discussion went from here to the starting 'meet and greet' innistrad thread. I would like to remedy that. So, Question to those in the BETA: Does everyone want to simply start in Ravnica, so things are a bit easier, and maybe getting training(possibly for the second colors that people may be wanting) and exp for the BETA Run?

I really liked the Idea of all the abilities we had would be Magic Cards that we use ability points to get. We could do that.

How about the mana?
I was planning to make my conjuration skills static, focusing the level ups on other abilities instead. As long as other abilities' requirements do not increase or nerfed, I'm agreeing with the revamp.
And I wouldn't have to change the backstory.
I was also quite wondering whether my character's fiery cosmetics would require him to constantly spend mana.
?
I hope, if it does require mana, the regeneration would cover it.
There's a section in the rules list that explains it. Is there anything you need clarified?

Ah. Wonderful. Thank you.
No problem.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

And in combat, 0.5 per turn?
And about life points.
e.g. A combat dropped my life points to 38. Would sleeping twice be enough?
A combat dropped my life points to 32. Would sleeping thrice restore it to 35?
Yes to both. I think it might be better if we have it refill 1.0 per turn, though, and 2.0 if you're somewhere that relates to your colour(s).
Yes to both.
