When I hit level 2 and am allowed to add a set I am planning on choosing Eventide.
Now do I need to know both white and black magic to cast a spell like Batwing Brume? Also I feel like this should be obvious be those spells cost more right?(that`s what the extended spells cost more in the shop is talking about?)
and if I hit myself with a card that says to discard one I don`t have to do it randomly out of 5 spells?
EDIT: I am quite excited by the new possible mulligan rules.
No, you only need to know one.
Yes, the spells cost more in the shop.
I don't think its ever actually come up, and I somehow doubt that it will, but I feel that the line "Spells that cost 0 can only be played once per turn" in the basic rules should be changed to "Spells that cost 0 can only be played once per turn per player"
Since otherwise, the rules could be interpreted to mean that if players A and B were both about to burned to death by player C, only one of the two could intervention pact and save themselves, as an example of why this might matter.
Also, and potentially more relevantly to future plans, does this line indicate that a player may only play one spell that costs zero per turn, or only one of each spell that costs zero per turn? And if this has come up before, I apologize and did not see it in a search.
Welcome to the MTGS forum RPG: Magic the RPG. We are glad you came. Come on in, it is a lot of fun, and it is easier than it seems. Here is how you start:
Starting satchels start with 5 points that can be used to purchase Xth edition spells. (Artificers, mages who can only work colorless mana, start with more points send a PM to a WPL for more information.)
1x Common costs .25 points.
1x Uncommon costs .5 points.
1x Rare costs .75 points.
*These reflect the amount of points that must be spent to obtain a single cast of the spell.*
Using this system one could have a satchel as big as 20 common spells or as small as 7 spells, 6 rare and 1 uncommon. Variety and customization is encouraged. Highlander style satchels are allowed, this is where the satchel consists of only singleton spells. You are still limited to 4 of the same type of spell as your maximum unless you are getting a spell like Relentless Rats which allows for an exception to the rules.
Your satchel is kept a secret between you, and all the WPLs. DO NOT post it in public (unless you don't care, several players prefer to keep their satchels out in the open so they can be updated easily enough).
Players start with 50 gold. Players also receive 4 castings of a common or uncommon land from Xth edition.
You start out as a Hanin, or a mage without a house.
Your character may be of any race as long as the WPLs approve it. However, your race will not help you in combat, it is solely for role playing.
Players also start with a 1/0 weapon. The starting weapon is typically a dagger, but you may make it whatever you want. This weapon costs one spell per turn to use when drawn. It cannot be upgraded and cannot be sold.
In order to start, you must post the following information in the Character Creation thread, which will allow you to enter Estark, and the Active Characters thread. Also, you must PM your satchel to all of the WPLs (Qfx, Cyouni, Nai, GigaGuess, Caex Kothar, RedDwarfian, Murphy, and Yukora) for approval. Wait to start playing until one of the WPLs approves your character and satchel.
New Mages are required to provide the following information:
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Height:
Weight:
Appearance:
After getting approved, you will enter Estark, City of Kush. All buildings in Estark can be found in its sub-forum. If you join a quest, that will happen in the main forum. Once you level up a sufficient amount, you will be permitted to enter Ravnica.
You must keep your information up to date on the Active Characters thread or else you won't get experience. This includes sending updated character sheets to your WPLs when anything about your character changes.
The term Mulligan is loosely related to the card game here in the RPG. Each house has spell merchants that will trade at a 1 for 1 value your old Xth edition spells for any other Xth edition spell related to the house. That is House Shimia has Xth edition black and artifact spells. Each house trader provides the house color and artifacts from Xth edition for the 1 for 1 trade system using the same ratios found in the Starting Character section.
Veteran Bonus to all current level 2 and higher players in the project. It's a small compensation of 2 bonus Satchel Point; our way of saying, "Sorry you had to deal with that flawed system."
Training - will also be updated to reflect the new starting character point system with a limit of 12 individual spells staying in place.
I kindly request either somone get red to post on my quest or that one of you seven other WPL's (Really seven it felt more like 3 or 4) take over that quest.

I kindly request either somone get red to post on my quest or that one of you seven other WPL's (Really seven it felt more like 3 or 4) take over that quest.
If red doesn't come back soon I'll see about picking the quest up (tag team much? >.< ).
I could give you a whole explanation as to my absences, and this would go into tons of craziness. Interviews, Internships, etc. If you want to hear the weirdest set of symptoms for Influenza I've ever had, I'll send you a PM.
Nevertheless, this has been unfair to everyone on my quests.
Therefore, I give you my pledge: I have set up an alarm system on my computer, and every weeknight at 10 PM, EST, this will go off. At this time, I will post on at least two quests that I am involved in, from 10 PM to Midnight. The only thing which will stop me is if I'm out of the house, away from my computer, or with my girlfriend, and even then, she probably won't stop me unless we're already busy doing something.
Regardless, I will be trying to post every weeknight from now on.

The ruling means that a player can only cast spell that costs 0 per turn cycle, not one of each spell that costs zero.
The goal of this rule is to limit first turn combo kills.
Your revised wording makes it sound like if there are more player on a quest you can cast more zero to cast spells per turn. The wording should probably be changed to
"Each player may only cast one spell that costs 0 per turn"

Smile your day could be worse, so I did smile and it was worse.
I do expect something for myself sometime soon or I will become less happy than i already am. Also expect that I will be petitioning to have red removed from the project as a WPL. Given circumstances I feel that this is prudent decision especially given the standards you've set in place (and consequently hold me to).

Sigh,
I know things can get frustrating when real life comes knocking for any of the WPLs. But honestly if he were removed as a WPL then the project would come to a near standstill as I try to manage even more on top of what I am currently doing.
any news as to what is going to happen with Red's quests? We've been waiting for almost a month to start the quest, and now that we had just begun, we are waiting for over 3 weeks...
Hey guys,
My internet has been having connection issues these past couple of days. My provider is sending someone out this Monday to check on what the problem may be. This is part of the reason I did not get to updates sooner. Right now I am using a university computer to do some quick updates. If I do not update your quest tonight/this morning than I apologize. Should your quest not be updated then send me a PM and I will prioritize your quest when I do my next batch of updates.
Concerning Red's quests, I have already picked up a few key ones, putting me at a rather high number of quests right now. The rest will be picked up by my fellow WPLs. Right now they are brainstorming over who should take what and what direction the quest was going. I hate to ask, but please give them at least another week of your patience as they attempt to get into the swing of picking up your quests.
The open quests thread needs a bit of a tidy up, most of the quests contained within have already started. As far as I can tell there are no open quests.
I feel the need to post this here, so that I might be able to break the limbo that seems to be occurring in my quests.
Effective immediately, I am resigning as WPL to this project. I do not mean this as some dramatic gesture, and to dispel it I just have to say, the reasons are just a lack of time and drive. I have been having less and less time, and it has been impacting on my drive and desire to continue to uphold my duties. On that topic, I will ask that anyone who is interested in joining the WPL team please send a PM to my compatriots. Anyone who volunteers will be considered.
Oh, dear. You will be missed, GigaGuess. I always enjoyed your moderation.
This brings up a question. Is there some way we can make the WPL's lives easier? It seems to be a problem all throughout the Colosseum that this happens, I keep seeing mods burn out. Maybe moderating is just too much harder than playing, but I wish there was something we, as players, could do to help out.

Any ideas?
Well the thing is moderating is also more like Dungeon Mastering and, while that is an awesome thing it can, after repeated and constant exposure, burn people out, some people need only take a weekend break, others much longer.
That being said i think players who wish to help need only look into how they can keep the work load light, keep your satchels up to date, make sure to communicate with the Mod/DM in a polite manner, don't get hung up on a feature/trait/etc that you really want and the mod has already declined for the nth time.
It may not look like much, but even something as simple as keeping your Character sheet tidy can help.
Edit: On and before i forget, sad to see you go Giga, I hope perhaps once i get out of my slump you will also be having more time and can take back the mantle.

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die.
Small things like calculating your Satchel points when sending in updates on your character sheet always helps. The main issue with being a WPL is that each one has a certain threshold before a burnout starts to occur. This is almost always related to how many real life commitments they are trying to balance in addition to the game's they run.
More real life commitments means a lower threshold for the number of quests the WPL can manage before burning out. Also understanding, and making sure your WPL understands, that a small steady update stream is ok. Sometimes they will miss an update somewhere and then that creates a snowball effect that deters from their desire to post. So if a WPL is doing a large number of updates and running several quests then don't panic if they miss you in the first run of updates. Just send a PM reminder.
