Back to the topic, though, I feel that upon level up, a person should be able to invest a certain amount of points in spells. Even (Using startup satchel ratios...1=common, 2=uncommon, 3=rare) 2 points a level.
Well if we use the startup ratio's the spells are going to be drastically easier to get... additionally, the 2 points per level thing will give us 6 additional points at levels 1 to 3 (in addition to the initial 5 if we are using starting ratio's) which puts us at a distinct disadvantage considering currently we start with the equivalent of 10 to 12 points in our starting satchel, and get an additional 28 or so points to add spells with to our starting satchels before we even begin to get points for level ups....
So in otherwords, I think your idea, while it does have some merit, automatically is bad because it puts us behind the 8-ball.

"As the size of an explosion increases, the number of social situations it is incapable of solving approaches zero." -- Varsuvius, Order of the Stick
I'm accounting for the 5 technical points...we start with the ability of 5 commons, or an amalgamate of the above. Naturally, it would be fine tuned into the satchel point system accordingly, I was just throwing a figure out there as an approximate value...essentially saying a person is entitled to an Uncommon per level, or two commons. Or choose to save the points, if so chosen.
As a note, your satchel size does increase, starting at level 3 and every 4 levels thereafter (3, 7, 11, etc.) by 7 points. This is to make it so that players are forced to choose which spells their characters carry around instead of being able to schlep around all spells they own.

Never forget: there's always someone bigger, better and stronger than you.
Someone once asked me why, when I talk about House Dimir, I don't put the word "the" in front of it.
At the time, I had no answer, but it just came to me.
Do we put the word "the" in front of God?

Also, as a side note for turn-1 kills. When I start seeing them and start seeing them abused, well, there's always the heavens to pick from . . .

Honestly, I've done that before in table-top games where a single player is making the situation less fun for everyone else in the game. I just chuck an asteroid at the character to shut him up, often when the player's going on about how awesome his character is.
To me, developing a guaranteed turn-1 kill in this format is amounting to the same thing: you're telling me (and the other WPLs) how awesome you are. Once it irritates me enough . . . ASTEROID!

Glad I decided to change my satchel plans from Dragonstorm... to Tribal-Humans
Actually, the first turn kill with Dragonstorm wouldn't even really work in this format... because it requires playing more than 3 spells per turn... in fact, I don't even think the Spinerock Knoll version of Dragonstorm would work, because it would violate the three spells per turn rule as well... damn... no I really am glad I changed the satchel I am playing to Tribal Humans....
Because I couldn't think of a better place to put this I am placeing it here.
Currently we have in place that when you join a guild you recieve a 1x signet of that guild.
For the inner houses you receive a 1x (time spiral) totem of that color.
What I propose is that we create a series of 5 artifacts called the House signets. They would cost the same as a guild signet and activate for the same cost but produce a single colored mana of the appropirate house and a colorless mana instead. General approval is all I am looking for and we can go ahead with this.

Ok the new house signets are up. If you have joined an inner house (so not many) you may report to your house representative to recieve your signet. They count as commons from standard.

Signets go to guild members, who start becoming guild members at level 3. It stands to reason that house signets would go to House members who passed some sort of Inner House initiation . . .

As a red mage, I think that the Mage Sight abilities are great. I think that seeing in the dark and being able to hear really far away are awesome for story purposes.
Not that I think being a smith would be for me personally, but if there were smiths, would that make there be more variety of original weapons?

I am asking how your system accounts for the additional 28 or so points that we each start with...
