From shadowmore I am more worried about things like the demigods which always hit play turn 5 or other spells which just are plain mean.
Also I am considering just banning Simian Spirit guide. Its a problem us WPL's have been talking about for some time especially in regards to non red mages (with no access to red) using it for mana acceleration. Would you players object to such a thing?

Simian Spirit Guide is one of those cards that is great in the arena but not really great (but still good) in quests.
The problem is a few people are already running it and some maybe want it.
Right, but that doesn't answer the latter part of his question. Should a non-red mage (like me) be allowed to use it for mana acceleration.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving, control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sado-masochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.
As an answer to that I will quote something I said in a PM to Ti'rin:
I think it should be for red mages only, as it is a red spell.
Hybrids are in my eyes the only cards that aren't bound to one color, but still they're bound to two colors.
From my point of view red spells are for red mages only and the same is for all other colors.
But the effect that gives mana is not red, is it? It has no activation cost other than removing the card from the game. So, in reality, it is a free one-time effect like sacrificing a Lotus Petal for the mana it offers.
And I'm not asking to hard-cast it, just use its mana effect.

Also, Landil, if you feel that way, then any land that does not produce colorless mana should not be able to be available to a mage who doesn't share at least one color with the land, right? Like Falnir has Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Roger Dredge has Ruins of Trokair. Also, any mage who has non-hybrid spells that do not contain at least one of their color shouldn't have them either, right? Like Forace with his Damnation and Pillory of the Sleepless.

Never forget: there's always someone bigger, better and stronger than you.
Someone once asked me why, when I talk about House Dimir, I don't put the word "the" in front of it.
At the time, I had no answer, but it just came to me.
Do we put the word "the" in front of God?

I understand that, but the card actually says "Simian Spirit Guide is red." so it is a red card even if you remove it for a R.
On the other hand it is already great in the hands of red magi, so if others could profit from it too it would be more balanced (just like playing that one black card in a mono-green deck just because it is so good).
Never forget: there's always someone bigger, better and stronger than you.

I think you shouldn't be able to draw mana from a source that you don't share a color with, something like, "your body is not properly tuned to the source of the mana to use it"
What if we made it cost 1 or 2 life to use? Sort of forcing your body to channel unfamiliar mana.

Honestly, I think SSG gives red mages a boost they absolutely do not need. I may be new here, but I have read through most of the ongoing quests. It scares me to think I will have to face a red mage with virtually no defenses against his spells, except for the small lifegain a black mage might manage.
Those Arena matches go quickly
At any rate, it is something that should not be banned, but the once-per-turn rule is a balancing factor...
As would allowing non-red mages to use it. For one, there's no guarantee there are more gems to be found. For two, if the non-red mage loses a life for tapping into what he or she doesn't fully understand, that's fine too. Since Lotus Petal is not legal, nor is Elvish Spirit Guide or Dark Ritual, the red mage has the advantage of free mana at common in a Standard set. This is somewhat unfair, as it doesn't take up hardly any satchel space due to rarity. Red doesn't need more mana, they blow stuff up without even trying. (Though I pity the red mage that faces the white mage with Silver Knight/Worship. Ouchies.)
I am in favor of allowing nonred mages to utilize SSG, at a one life payment and limited to once per turn. Red mages should not have to pay the life because red mana is second nature to them.
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

I suppose it's true. Though the logistics implied in a human/Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon pairing makes me shudder.
...Something tells me that even should all arcane casters in the world unite, that the Grease spell would NOT be sufficient.
Ok, Simian Spirit Guide is already restricted to 2 casts.
Two suggestions:
- restrict it to one cast per turn.
- 1 life penalty for non-red mages to cast it.

I'm still on the fence about this issue. On one hand, I'm a little skeptical about banning a card that does nothing but add R to your mana pool. I think it should only be available to red mages (and perhaps to anyone who first completes a mountain-based quest).
On the other hand, I bet more than a few people remember the fiasco of the 2-on-2 Sorcerers vs. Warlocks arena match. Nezumi was dead turn 1. Now granted, that was back when the 2-mana rule was still in effect, but it still could make for some quick turn-2/3 kills with SSG.
EDIT: Landil and AoK snuck in posts while I was typing mine. I like Landil's suggestion, but perhaps with my suggestion about having to quest first to be able to use it (to get a feel for the red mana).
They love and hate to see me walk through the door. I'm the man with the box, one to carry all his Standard cards with him. I've got the commons and uncommons they need. But I've also got my decks. If I walk into FNM, I came to play. And they never know what I'm gonna pull out of my hat next. I may lose more than I win, but it just might be THIS deck that has all the answers that they don't have answers for. They fear the unknown. They fear me. And they never see me coming!
Simian Spirit Guide has also already been limited to one use per turn.

So, I've discovered a card we might restrict, it's Summer Bloom.
How does it work?:
Turn 2:
Play a forest, tap 2 forests, play summer bloom, play 3 forests, tap 2 forests, play summer bloom, play 3 forests, tap 2 forests, play summer bloom, play 3 forests. In Play:
11x Forest (6x:symtap:) Graveyard:
3x Summer Bloom
Arguments:
- green mages can get a maximum of 9 extra lands on turn 2
- it can, unlike creatures like Skyshroud Ranger, only be taken out by things like counterspells.
Counterarguments:
- it's 9th edition, so a mage has to get 9th edition as a standard set first.
What to do with it?:
Suggestions:
- Leave it as it is now. (0 votes)
- Restrict it to 2 casts. (0 votes)
- Restrict it to 1 cast per turn. (3 votes)
- Ban it (1 vote)
In this game, Summer Bloom is more potent and broken then Dark Ritual, since we don't have hands to hamper this. I'd say ban it, but I'd be willing to settle for restricting it and putting a limit of 1 per turn. Or errata'ing it to say the lands CIPT.
