He points up into the mountains. "You'd be looking for the akki. Some of them have allied with Godo and his sanzoku, but there are still a lot who remain independent. You may find your goblin thief among them."
"Only that things have funny names here, sir." Talnin replies mischievously but in good nature to the rider.
Talnin turns to Uldran and says "yeah sure, but those mountains look pretty big - seems like there'd be a lot of places for one of them 'Okki' settlements."
"Ah, I keep getting ahead of myself." Uldran admits, a bit begrudgingly. "I think some horses and possibly a map would do wonders for this search. Maybe the outpost has ones to spare?" He questions.
The rider shakes his head. "We've never been able to make a map of the Sokenzan. I could point out the general areas, but we haven't been able to go into the mountains because of Godo. We can't leave the border undefended."
"We have no horses that can be made available, but mages often have ways of making their journeys faster."
Eavath nodded in agreement with Talnin. "We should get going if we want to get there early. It seems we have a long trek ahead of us." in response to what the guard said, "Do either of you two have something to help us get up there faster?"
"Yeah I know, buddy" Talnin says to the griffin as he scratches the creature's neck. "Not quite like the fields back home, huh?"
Talnin turns to Uldran and Eavath. "They're the locals back where I'm from. The patron beasts of our village. They're quite friendly...well, to people they know, at least."
"But you're gonna be good, aren't ya, boy?" Talnin coos as he scratches the griffin's neck a little more. "Do you think you can take us there?" Talnin asks, pointing to a particularly craggy-looking part of a mountain that he felt was as good as any a place to start looking.
Talnin is concerned about how the griffins he knew would fare in this weather, with its decidedly colder climate.
"I might need to call on one more - they're strong, but the three of us might weigh too much for a lone griffin."
Talnin begins to do just that, but sneaks a glance at the rider he spoke to just because he's a little curious if this sight would faze him at all.
"I'm not opposed to flying. Certainly saves time from hiking there." Uldran replies, a bit apprehensively. "Although, it will certainly be a new experience for me. Whatever order you want us to ride in is okay with me Talnin. I just hope the griffin isn't put off by a black mage..." he says, muttering under his breath.
I've no qualms again riding a griffin. Eavath nodded to Talnin. He looked at the large winged creature. It looked magnificent. Not much different than the ones he had seen from afar. Much closer, though, they seemed much more majestic.
The rider looks quite unfazed. Perhaps he's seen something similar before.
In response to Talnin's question, the griffin bobs its head, giving an affirmative squawk.
The other griffin materializes beside the first. It looks around for a second, then looks at the first griffin, tilts its head to the side, and gives a questioning squawk. It is answered, quite unsurprisingly, by another squawk.
Talnin smiles at the sight of the two griffins getting along, but makes a slight face at Uldran's words. He was wondering why he felt a little unsettled ever since he entered Greel's office. At first, he thought it was just Greel, then he thought it might have been this unfamiliar land, now he knows that it's his proximity to a black mage.
This is going to take a little getting used to.
"You're right, Uldran. That's why I think it best if you-" Talnin tensed up a little "- ride with me. I think the griffin would feel a lot more comfortable with me on board, as well."
"As for you, Eavath," Talnin smiles, "our other friend here seems to like you - I think you two will get along just fine. Climb on board, guys! Oh and Eavath, remember to keep your claws in your paws - Griffins don't like pointy surprises."
Talnin hops onto the back of a griffin, and turns to the Kamigawan rider he spoke to. "Excuse me sir, but you mentioned knowledge of at least some areas of these mountains. Before we depart, anything you could tell us about the region would really help us, since we're kinda new around here."
I sense some tension coming from Uldran. It would probably be best if I try to make this journey easier on both of us.
"I sense hesitancy from you Talnin, which is understandable," and unable to resist the terrible pun, "Don't worry, I don't bite." Chuckling at his own joke, Uldran turns serious, "I am not what you would say an evil black mage. I just always strive to make myself stronger, willing to do almost anything to accomplish that, and right now I need you guys or I probably won't survive out here alone. The enemy of my enemy is my friend if you will."
Trying to put the matter to rest, "On this mission, you two are my allies, and I will defend you as such."
In order to try and help fit in, and cool tensions, he goes to attempt and lightly pet the griffin. But looking into the griffin's eye, Uldran stops before touching the winged beast. "I don't think he is ever going to like me. Understandable, if a little disappointing." Uldran makes his way to the back of the griffin where Talnin rests, pulls a vial of red liquid out of his coat, and throws it back quickly.
Uldran then hops onto the back of the griffin, "Ready to go when you are Talnin."
As Uldran waits for Talnin's final question to be answered, he looks the griffin over. It really was a majestic beast. One of the few downsides of black creatures I suppose. All of our "majestic" creatures are so for being frightening. Oh well, in the heat of battle I would rather have my zombies than something that looks pretty.
Not only a black mage, but a vampire? And here I was thinking not to jump to a 'vampire' conclusion about someone just because they dress in black, have that sort of face and long white hair. 'Don't judge a tome by its cover' father always said.
For just a breath, Talnin considers asking Uldran to sit in front of him on the griffin, but knows that that would never work.
"Yeah, well, I just hope you don't feel peckish while we're in midair" Talnin says, in an attempt at humour and not to come off as being too uncomfortable around Uldran.
Talnin smiles and half-shrugs at Eavath.
"What was that thing you just tossed out, anyway?" Talnin asks Uldran, but regretting he did so immediately after.
OOC: "Threw Back" meant opened and quickly drank, not physically thrown. Crystal vials aren't cheap.
Hmm, if anything Talnin is more hesitant around me than before. Maybe the joke was a bit too much...
"It seems you were unaware that I even was a vampire, which should attest to the fact that I am not like the crazed Sengir Vampires you hear about. I have much more control, and self-respect, over myself."
In response to Talnin's joke, "I'm not quite sure on your knowledge of vampire anatomy, but we don't feed through our noses, or have beaks."
Taking the empty vial out of his sleeve, "And this vial was full of blood. I keep many on me to help control 'vampiric' urges, and to keep myself fed for long periods of time if its necessary. Like now, I made sure to load up on a journey of this length."
Oooh ok - thanks for clearing that up :p. This makes the lyrics for 'zoot suit riot' make a lot more sense!
'Peckish' means to feel like having a snack :p. I'm not sure if you are not familiar with the term, or if Uldran isn't.
Talnin nods as Uldran mentions the name 'Sengir'. In truth though, Talnin has not even come across the name and has little knowledge of vampires beyond the fact that they exist and are almost always wicked. Talnin just feels a little inwardly concerned about appearing less worldly than his newfound traveling companions.
"That's swell..." Talnin says as Uldran describes the nature of the vials he keeps on him. "Me, I think I'll stick with some good ol' fashioned stale travel bread."
Oh we both know what it means. Just an attempt at humor by Uldran, missing the literal definition of peckish, and instead turning it into a bird joke.
"Well, I wouldn't say they are for everyone. But to be fair, I feel the same way about your food as you do mine." Uldran says in a light-hearted tone. The two races have never really seen eye-to-eye on food.
Eavath chuckled when told he should keep his claws in. He grinned and said, "Those are reserved for special occasions." He carefully walks over and runs a hand down the neck of the griffin he was going to be riding. The feathers beneath his paw felt soft, yet strong enough to hold against the fiercest of winds. He gave a small smile to the griffin as he quickly jumped onto its back. He made little adjustments to how he was sitting and found a comfortable spot just behind the wing joint, but not close enough to hinder its movements. He nodded to Talnin and Uldran and said, "Ready whenever you guys are."
The rider ponders for a second. "The akki around here all work for Godo. You'll probably have to hunt through the mountains until you find the goblin you're looking for."
Talnin thanks the rider, but privately feels concerned that this fellow seems to know almost as little about this region as he and his two companions do.
These bandits are going to be a lot more trouble than I hoped they would be.
Talnin turns to glance at Uldran and Eavath, then smiles and nods at Eavath's griffin to make sure that it too was prepared to fly.
"Alright, buddy" Talnin says to the griffin he and Uldran are on, "let's go!"

"As a matter of fact," he says as he starts to draw mana, "how do you guys feel about flying?"
Talnin begins to summon a griffin to his side.
