OOC: There isn't a sandstorm at the moment. The sand is just shaped as though a sandstorm had whipped it into dunes.
As Kassim and Vorin approach the totem, the runes glow with dull brown power. The wind picks up rapidly, and suddenly a twister roars to life. The sand whips in stinging waves and visibility drops to almost zero. From within the heart of the storm, dark shapes can be seen moving.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin senses the mana in the totem and nods to Kassim as the visibilty goes down.
He gathers more mana, and a dim red light begins to radiate from him, allowing him to see a tiny bit more clearly. Summoning the mana is beginning to hurt him again, and he grunts a little bit as he conjures a goblin to his side to defend himself. The goblin, shocked at this bizarre weather, seems irritated and ready to attack, but Vorin commands it to stay by his side rather than run blindly into the sandstorm. Vorin, who seemed to be becoming accustomed to this conditions, raised his hand ready to strike down anything that attacked him.
From out of the dust storm, one of the figures gets closer. It stops within five steps of the two mages. It's Felix. He tilts his head slightly at the two of them, then speaks. "Fools. You didn't actually think we'd let you touch our sacred totem, did you?"
He throws off the red bandana covering his face, revealing a horrible sight: His mouth is a gaping maw dripping with blood and filled with razor sharp fangs. Behind him, the other four mages who were in town reveal themselves from the dust storm. They too throw off their bandanas, with similar horrific results.
"Accept your fate," Felix says as he takes a single step closer to the two. Then he stops abruptly, and seems to be waiting for the two mages to do... something. He hasn't drawn in any mana, and he stares at Kassim and Vorin with a mixture of anticipation, hunger, and some other emotion that can't be placed.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin's instincts are to attack. Elves do not retreat. He took a step forward toward Felix with a look of disgust, but his leg simply fell from under him. He was exhausted, and his body could not stand gathering this mana yet another time.
Thinking quickly, he tried to adapt Kassim's diplomatic perspective, trying to make it look like he had not attempt to fight when he lunged forward. It wasn't very convincing. He nodded at Kassim and gazed back at the totem, not looking at Felix. Knowing that he had no way to defend himself, he chose to stay quiet, angry at himself for falling for this deception.
Felix doesn't react at all to Kassim's words. It's as though he didn't even hear him speak. He doesn't even seem to see Kassim falling forward. He simply stares ahead hungrily at the two mages, the same look on his face.
Felix simply says again "Accept it," and takes a second step forward. Behind him, the other four mages echo his words.
Behind the two mages, a wall of solid sand explodes upward, creating a barrier behind them that prevents escape. The wind continues to whip and sting.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
The other mages take a single step closer, placing them just behind Felix. They have identical looks on their faces as Felix does. The emotion on their faces are even the same.
They seem to be waiting for something, not moving nor talking nor seemingly breathing. Just standing, starting, with their fanged mouths hanging open and the hint of hungry smiles on their faces.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin listened to Kassim as he spoke his plan, fortunate that he did not have to get up, but as Kassim planned, he became angrier and angrier. He refused to simply flee in the faces of these cowards that had ambushed them.
He gathered the power to stand up and looked down at his hands where the red mana was concentrated. His body ached still from gathering the mana, and in his weakened state he could not imagine gathering any more red mana. At a loss, he began to focus inward.
He was trying to do something he had not done since learning to use red mana. He focused deep inside himself and remembered his origins in the Forest. He clenched his fist as he felt himself struggling to remember how he had learned to gather mana in his youth. With the red mana draining his body, he had convinced himself that the only way to be able to beat these monsters was to summon green mana once again. Vorin reached deep inside himself, but the more he focused on his mana, the more hopeless he felt. It was as if he was reaching into a bottomless void. Suddenly, his eyes flashed green for less than a second, and then everything he had been focusing on collapsed. The green mana inside him was gone, and there was clearly no way he could access it now. His hands flew open and began to glow brightly red, enough so that anyone would be able to see them through the sandstorm. The burn marks on Vorin's scarred body began to singe in pain, as if his body was rejecting the idea of reusing green mana.
His elven magic may not have come back, but many of his ingrained elven instincts seemed to be returning to him in this instant. He felt ruthless, powerful, and cunning. He looked towards the attackers ready to fight with all the strength he had left, but when he turned back to Kassim, he noticed something in the corner of his eye...the totem. Suddenly, with all the energy his scarred body could muster, Vorin dashed toward the totem. With his hands still glowing red with mana, he put one on top of the other and rested them a mere inches from their sacred totem. He strategically placed the goblin he had summoned in the space between himself and his attackers. He seemed to have enough red mana for one, clear, destructive blast.
He finally spoke, and sounded very weak. "Retreat now. Or else I'll destroy your sacred relic..."
On the Battlefield:
2 Mountains (Untapped, and ready to be used to blast the sacred totem to smithereens with Incinerate)
1 Raging Goblin (Half way between Vorin and Felix, ready to defend Vorin)
OOC: To clarify, Vorin was once a green mage. In this time of crisis, he tried to access this mana again to fight with, and failed. I am not trying to become a green mage here, just RPing.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
OOC: Sorry. I just started a new job, so posting may be spotty for a bit...
Vorin looked over at Kassim with disbelief, but was ready to protect him when he was attacked. Vorin turned one hand away from the totem ready to attack any of the creatures that approached Kassim. His teammate might be surrendering, but he certainly would not.
Meanwhile, there had been little action for a few minutes. Nerves were high, but there was a lull in the actual fighting. Hoping to take advantage of this lull, Vorin moved his hand resting by the totem slightly closer to it leaving a small red flame on the totem which slowly began to extinguish without spreading. As the flame disappeared from the totem, he slowly focused upon it, trying to access the mana of the desert. However, he was ready to interrupt this process in an instant to rush to Kassim's aid.
OOC: I am attempting to make the spiritual connection with the land I am right next to, taking advantage of the temporary ceasefire. I am doing this using a small bit of fire, but am trying to be subtly, as I appear to be far-ish from the action. Again, if Kassim is attacked I will rush to his aid.
OOC: Vorin is a bit too far away from the totem to make a connection. He'd have to be physically touching it, and Felix is closer to Kassim and Vorin than they are the totem. Not that it matters.
Felix's smile widens even more, stretching his mouth grotesquely. "You accept?"
With a loud roaring noise, he and the other mages vanish in bursts of sand. The wall behind the two mages also disintegrates. The sandstorm dies down as quickly as it appeared, leaving the dunes surrounding the totem a little higher, but otherwise there is nothing around. The totem gleams in the sunlight, the air somehow more clean and fresh than it was before the storm.
The bowl-shaped top of the totem glimmers and flashes in the sun. It appears to be filled with fresh water, clean of any sand or debris that surely would have been kicked up by the windstorm. Felix and the other mages are nowhere to be seen.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
The water is almost perfect. Not freezing cold, but not warm from the desert sun as it should be. It washes off the dust from Kassim's face and somehow seems to refresh him even though he didn't drink any. Even though he splashed out some of the water, the bowl doesn't appear to have become any emptier.
As the water hits him, he feels the faint stirrings of natural, wild mana under his feet. The land, it seems, is fully ready for a connection to be formed.
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin was absolutely shellshocked. He had always been taught never to surrender. There was no way he could have won that fight, but he was still pissed that he didn't fight it.
He walked over to the totem and splashed water on his face just like Kassim did. Suddenly, he felt happy to be alive still, and began to be happier that Kasism had accepted the test. Had it just been him, he probably would have jumped in and be dead right now. The water felt refreshing on the burns on his faith and seemed to sooth the aches in his bodies he had attained from summoning all the red mana.
He felt the mana beneath his feet, he shot a small burst of flames down at the ground. He watched the small area of desert beneath the flame burn to a crisp. The flame turned grayer, and Vorin began to feel the Desert mana entering his system.
"Actually, I was hoping to return to the town one last time. If I was sensing correctly, Felix is a red mage, and since that whole act appears to have been some bizarre illusion (Vorin sounded tentative and unsure about this), I was hoping to at least talk to him. I haven't really had a chance to meet other red mana users, so it may be useful. But you should head back to Estark. I don't want to keep you waiting and I remember the way back..."
"Good luck to you as well, and thank you for your companionship"
Vorin shook Kassim's hand. "I hope to see you around Estark soon"
He smiled awkwardly, then noted "Oh, and if the mapmakers (Saffi + Hans) have any sort of reward for us making this expedition, please leave my share at the red mana Sorcerers House. Thanks."
Vorin also turned away and walked back towards the village. He was glad he had completed the long grueling task. The red mana was beginning to feel more natural, and the fact that he had used it successfully validated him.
However, he still had a lot to learn about this mana, so walked back towards the village, his mind set on encountering Felix...
OOC: CK, if you want to end this, we can. I don't mean to drag it out, but Vorin would really like to meet up with Felix.
OOC: Vorin can speak to Felix in this thread. I'll just have Kassim report to Saffi in the Saffi and Hans thread.
The journey back to Estark seems shorter that the trip to the desert was. In almost no time at all, Kassim has landed just outside Estark's city gates.
OOC: Madmanquail, please continue your role playing here instead of this thread, and we'll finish up this quest.
Vorin makes his way back to the village. Just before he passes the first house, he spots Felix and his companions walking the city, presumably patrolling and looking for disturbances. They haven't spotted Vorin, as they are walking with their backs to him at the moment.

Vorin was confused at the comment...wasn't Felix there? He shook it off and nodded. What happened by the totem had been so bizarre, and he wanted to focus on what he knew wasn't a test or an illusion.
"Felix, I came back to ask you for some training...I've been feeling red mana radiating from you since we arrived" (Vorin was gazing at the red headband Felix has been wearing). "You must know something that will help me master this red mana that is eating away at my body. I haven't learned to use it correctly yet, and I'm sure a powerful mage such as yourself must have something to teach me."
Vorin slowed down at the end. He wasn't used to asking for help, but he had been rehearsing what he would say since parting ways with Kassim. Of course, he couldn't help but sound awkward.
Felix's brow furrows for a moment, as if in thought. He motions to his companions, and says "Go on ahead without me."
He seems to consider Vorin for a few more moments, then removes the bandana from his face. His face is normal, not a gaping maw filled with fangs. "Please, walk with me."
He turns to move toward the middle of the town. "You say you are can use red mana, but you also say it is 'eating away' at you. I'm afraid I don't understand. Your mana shouldn't be acting like that."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin was slightly shocked at Felix's willingness to talk.
"Red mana is new to my body" He said somewhat shamefully. "I am an elf deep from the Gilt-Leaf Woods." There was some pride in this statement, as he seemed to be forgetting that it was true a lot, but as he continued the story, be began to sound shameful again. "I used to be a master of green mana just like the rest of my tribe. Not long ago, I was ambushed by a tribe of flamekin. They left me for dead, and my body was burned and scarred. When I regained consciousness, the green mana in my body was completely gone, and I could no longer access it. However, something took its place in me, and was keeping me alive. There was this new burning sensation, and over time, I began to turn it into red mana and mastered a few red spells. However, my elven body rejects this mana. My body aches every time I gather mana, especially for a drawn out period of time. Every since I've started using this mana, I've been searching for powerful red mages, those who could teach me to control this mana, and teach my body to use if efficiently as opposed to rejecting it."
"Hm..." Felix says with a frown. "That is very unusual. I've never heard of a mage losing his connection to one form of mana and gaining another in its place."
Musingly, and mostly to himself, he says "I suppose some kind of mental or magical trauma could do it... Red mana shares some characteristics with green. That could be part of it."
"I have a few theories. The first is that your connection to green mana is simply dormant. It is still there, but is being overwhelmed by the red mana. If you were to strengthen yourself and learn to control the red mana more effectively, the green would return in time."
"The second is that you lost your green mana and it was replaced with red. If that's the case, your body may need some time to adjust to the differences between them. Again, strengthening your body and your magical skills is the answer. Think of it like a muscle you haven't used in years. It will ache when you first exercise it, but eventually it gets stronger."
"The third is the most troubling... If your bond to green mana was simply shattered, your body might have grasped for any connection to mana it could find. The fire from the elementals' magic might have been the only thing nearby, and it latched on to it. If this is the case, your access to red mana wouldn't be your own. Some elementals use red mana differently than other beings due to the unique physical traits of the elementals. If you're using elemental red mana, it could eventually burn you to ash. I wouldn't know of any way to reverse this process. The stronger you become, the stronger the mana would get and the faster you would burn from the inside out. Pray this isn't what's happening in your case."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin's was rapt throughout Felix's entire explanation. He was shocked that the mage knew so much and took a moment to contemplate each of Felix's three possibilities.
"So pretty much, I just need to become stronger, right? Either train my body to use the mana, help my body rediscover green mana, or become strong enough that I can find a way to reverse this process?" He looked back at Felix and there was a long pause as Vorin thought this over more.
"So can you help me? I've never met a red mage like you before. We passed the test you use to test new mages, so can you train me like you would them? If only for a few days...I don't think I can get any better just flailing around with red mana as I am."
"That's the gist of it, yes," Felix says simply. He frowns slightly at Vorin. "Unfortunately, we don't exactly teach our young mages. The desert trial is the test. After that, they have to develop their skills for themselves. Here in the desert, you must learn to rely on yourself and your skills to survive."
He considers Vorin for a moment more. "Especially the red and green mages. Red and green magic is primal, instinctive. You must learn to use it based on your instincts and your emotions, not on formal training or instruction. Blue mana is intellectual. White mana is orderly. Black mana is dangerous to control. Those are the kind of mana which you recieve training with."
"But red and green. Masters of those magicks aren't the teaching type. Their magic doesn't come from careful study or instruction of a master. They must experiment. Grow on their own, like a forest or a wildfire. Unfortunately, the only instruction I can give you is to embrace the mana. Use it when it feels right. Don't over-think it. Embrace your new mana instead of resisting it or fearing it. It might help, if only to boost your confidence and your resolve."
Everything scares me... kitties scare me... squirrels scare me... corpses....corpses bring forth a pletora of confusing feeling which i prefer not to dwell on...:p
Vorin understood and he nodded to show it. He had never really learned green mana either. The elves only taught him elven lifestyle and how to fight.
He thought for a second, then finally responded. "Right, then can you show me?". He reached towards his satchel with an eagerness in his eyes. "Take a few moments to spar with me. Is there an arena in this town?"
