"Of course I'm ready" he replied anxiously. After a few hours of tedious waiting, he was very ready, but that time gave him some much needed time to think, and he was ready to prove himself, if nothing else to this desert traveling stranger. He was so ready, he began walking out the door after confirming with Kassim. However, he quickly turned around after realizing that he was leaving prematurely and attempted to play it off as if it were nothing. He looked toward Saffi with anticipation.
Vorin grabbed the two scrolls. He knew what Kassim meant, he had seen a few of them flying around the city. Flying really didn't seem Vorin's place, leave that to the birds. Vorin had never flown before, but it can't be worse than going through that portal.
Vorin stepped outside and read the scroll. He readied his mana, but he didn't need any to make the thopter appear (I am assuming Ornithopter). "Wow, the technology here sure is advanced" he thought. Not really knowing how to work one of these contraptions, Vorin patiently waited for Kassim to get on so he could follow his lead.
OOC: GM, I apologize, I missed that when it was posted. MadManQuail, what you did was Godmodding. It is bad enough if a WPL does it, and is reportable if a player does. I will let it go with a warning, but do NOT let it happen again, capice?
He approached the flying device. He didn't know how to work it, but he was too prideful to ask. He would have to figure it out from watching Kassim, and he was a fast learner. In the forests, you had to be.
Vorin watched Kassim and quickly replayed the action in his head. He moved towards the thopter and placed his hands and feet in the same position that Kassim had. Suddenly, the machine seemed quite simple as it was built sensibly. A rush of confidence came over him as he even knew what to do next, before seeing Kassim act. Still, he didn't want to mess up and embarrass himself.
"You take the lead. After all, you know where we are going, right? I'll be right behind you"
Vorin watched Kassim take off and began copying his motion nearly flawlessly. Within seconds, he was off the ground following the trail of Kassim. Although he tried to spread out to gain more surveillance while flying, he found it much easier to fly directly behind Kassim. He felt guilty, as it seemed harder to fly up front, as he was riding Kassim's tailwind, but he wasn't confident enough in his flying skills or sense of direction to speak up.
While taking off, he had inadvertently kicked one bar out of place at the back of the thopter. His thopter was subtly drifting to the left for the entire trip, but he was able to get it on course easily. However, he spent the entire trip glancing back to make sure the thopter was still functional.
Once he took off, the flying became increasingly more natural much quicker than he expected. He could easily keep up with Kassim and execute complex maneuvers. A small amount of red mana began flowing through his body, and suddenly he began feeling confident as he flew, as if he'd done this a hundred times before.
Vorin pressed on forward as well. He kept looking around, but everything he saw didn't mean much to him. It was all a new land. Occasionally, he would expect to see a large forest full of elves or a river filled with Merrow, but the mysterious landscape kept on coming. He figured home was in the opposite direction.
Vorin began to wonder where they would land. Remembering Kassim's warning, he became extremely anxious for an opportunity to test his abilities and to prove himself. He scanned the desert below them to understand the type of landscape they would be traveling in so that he could be ready to fight...and survive. What kind of enemy would they fight and who would they encounter. He decided that he knew so little about this faraway land, such speculation was useless. He tried to stop thinking about it and focus on flying straight, but the anticipation didn't stop.
Meanwhile, the tilt in his thopter was getting worse and he would periodically fall out of the tailwind and struggle to get back in. As a result, he was gradually falling behind Kassim, but Kassim was still easily visible, though he seemed to be gradually approaching the horizon line in relation to Vorin. Nevertheless, he kept behind him most of the time maneuvering back in to place. This was all the more reason to hope they land soon.
Vorin had fallen too far behind to see the signal, but he eventually noticed Kassim beginning to descend. As he did, Vorin began to descend but did so less skillfully. As Kassim descended, Vorin left his tailwind and suddenly a rush of air seemed to hit him and the burden of flying quickly onset. His gradual descent turned into a nosedive, but long before arriving at the ground, he returned to a normal landing angle. Unfortunately, the back end of his Ornithopter had forced him far to the left during this maneuver. He attempted to turn back towards Kassim, but he was focusing so much on approaching Kassim, he forgot about landing, and he eventually crashed into the ground at a low speed. He managed to get up, brush himself off, and recover quickly. Fortunately, he wasn't too far from Kassim so he began to run over towards him. The Ornithopter was wrecked, but Vorin was glad. He was so relieved to be on his feet again.
The mapseemed to fail to describe much more than a vast expanse of sand, sand and more sand. Fortunately, the scroll was still there in case anything should go seriously awry.
OOC: For threats, I'll need a d20 roll, +1 to Kassim for familiarity to the terrain.
By the time Vorin reached the bed of rock that Kassim was standing on, he was exhausted. Yet, he would not give up so easily. He dropped to one knee as he was catching his breath, but began to scan the area for any threats. There was obviously a lot of land to explore, so there was no time to rest. He would be fine.
Although Vorin saw nothing, he continued to crouch. He knew Kassim was the brains of this operation, so he decided to follow along. Seeing the azure haze in his eyes, he gather forth some mana of his own. His eyes began to glow as well, and the dark burns that covered his arms began to glow with an eerie red light.
Gathering red mana still caused Vorin a great deal of pain, which he had successfully hid at the Hammerheim house, not wanting to appear weak. However, in his tired state from flying, he could barely mask the pain. He attempted to disregard it. With his teeth clenched, he reached into his satchel and pulled out a gem. He managed to focus some of the power within him into that gem and a small goblin came out. Although the goblin was ready to charge, Vorin held it back waiting to see why they were defending themselves. Releasing the mana eased the pain slightly, and he would definitely be able to fight on. He put his hand over his eyes, inhaled deeply, calming himself, and then looked over at Kassim and whispered "Now what?"

OOC: Do we take another turn before the attack comes? I'm assuming no, but I can edit.
Vorin saw the incoming bandits with little time to react. The three charging him all managed to connect their blows to Vorin, and he fell further to the ground. He stepped back and got up quickly, but their daggers had slashed his right arm, which was bleeding. Keeping his distance, he gathered more mana (and was way to distracted by the fight to notice the pain this caused him). He summoned a second goblin, and the two goblins stood together in front of Vorin to protect him. Meanwhile, he grabbed another gem from his satchel and held it at the ready with mana focusing through it. He took a stance with the gem in hand and looked up at the bandits as if saying "Bring it on"
