Dannin frowned at Gear saying, "But last time you didn't have anyone with you to help you should things go wrong. You also didn't channel any mana the last time you attempted to activate it. All I'm suggesting is that we use the pad again but this time have you standing by with mana sources. Maybe you were acting as a conduit for the portal through the pad. Perhaps what you experienced was the portal trying to draw on power that you weren't providing. Figuring out how this artifact works will be groundbreaking for planar exploration and you're acting like you don't even want to give it a chance?"
Gear: I suspect that maybe your inference may be right Dannin. I was only questioning the reasoning behind your idea. Of course I want to figure out this planar portal I'm just being cautious that's all. Id rather not have to shorten my lifespan over something not quite thought out. That aside let's test this theory of yours no? Your here should anything go wrong and I fell that my trust in you will be well placed. Just guide me through the thought process as I ready my mana.
With that Gear begins to focus on drawing the mechanical elements that he uses to power his constructs. As he draws mana some of the scrap met begins to draw itself towards him.

Dannin cleared a path around the pad to make sure Gear would not fall on anything should things go wrong. Then looking to Gear he asked, "How much mana do you think you need to create a buffer?"
Gear: I'm not quite sure. I don't usually just build up mana like this for anything other than my constructs. The mild magnetism building up isn't quite making this feel any easier.

Gear: I'll go with half. Wouldn't want to underextend things.
With that Gear's eyes begin to shift to a dull grey misting over as the mechanical forces of mana that he uses begin to build up all around him. As he forces the energy into existence The very air around him begins to become somewhat statically charged as the energy within seems almost to form a nexus of power around Gear. Drawing more and more the metal that had only been pulling itself forward slowly begins to drag ever quicker towards Gears body stopping just outside a small circle surrounding his body. There it begins to gyrate ever so slowly. Stepping forward somewhat blindly Gears larger form makes its way towards one of the pawpads. Taking care not to place his metal paw down on the pad yet he props himself up all the while scrap metal is still encircling him.
Gear: Dannin are you ready?

Taking a deep breath Gear places his metallic paw into the activation pad he had placed it in before and holds his breath. Hopefully this wont hurt to badly...

Immediately Gear feels all of the mana he had gathered being pulled from him through the pad. Gear felt like everything was emptying into a bottomless pit, and yet half of his mana was not enough. He could sense the portal system reaching into his core, trying to draw in life energy to power the portal as the circle on the wall hummed with mana.
A bright silvery light filled the humming circle revealing a flickering image of a lab similar to this one on the other side. The portal had made an unstable connection and was trying to compensate with the limited mana Gear was providing...
Unstable portal connection. Gear will be taking 3 points of life loss on his upkeep. This life loss will continue until the portal has enough mana.
Gear's body is wracked in pain as the portal began to draw energy from him. Still standing though Gear keeps summoning more mana to feed the ever needing core. Convusing a bit Gear manages to keep his paw down on the pad focusing his entire existence into this act.
Gear: Dannin this is quite painful you know.... So I'd recommend you brainstorm before I pass out.
The first mana applied comes with some significant pain as does the second. Hopefully this will not push gear to far beyond his limits.
OOC: Assuming Gear Needs time to summon each additional land I will narrate the first six damage.

Damage decreases to 2 life. 8 Lands in play should prevent the system from sapping anymore life.
Dannin blinks before quickly dropping to the ground with his pack and pulling mana batteries out. Looking up at Gear he asked, "Will these help?"
Aggron catches a glimpse through the portal, a familiar yet strange person. One that triggers his early memories of the time he was being experimented on in an Esper lab. The figure on the other side of the portal staring directly at him with a shocked expression was a Vedalken whose entire body had been replaced with a highly refined alloy of Etherium...
Oh, yes. Aggron remembers. And this time he knows it's not a mistake.
<kill you kill you kill you kill YOU Kill YOU KILL YOU KIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLL YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUU>
Aggron's mental voice crescendoes into a scream that grates on the minds of the other two in the lab. All semblance of reason melts away, and he jumps and for the second time that day hurls himself recklessly into a portal. It's not a good habit.
OOC: Two different time reactions first is to Dannin action and Gear supporting the portal and second occurs a few second later as Gear notices what is happening. FYI.
Gear brings up his mana supplies to their limits and notices that the pain has subsided.
Gear: Dannin I'm not really familiar with mana batteries Arn't they supposed to store colored mana? as he speaks there is a distinctive difference in Gear's voice as the pain has somewhat subsided. Still he looks quite worse for wear given the amount of force required to charge the portal.
As Gear is speaking with Dannin he reels somewhat from the screaming but keeps his paw and mana fixed down into the pad as he watches the being with them leap into the portal in a murderous rage.

Aggron felt his body stretch and twist as he traveled yet again through another planar portal. Compared to his last trip this one was much smoother as he came out on the other side.
Dannin for his part blinked in shock holding a mana battery in each hand. He looked slowly from the portal to Gear and back again saying, "He just jumped through..."
Focusing on Gear he asked, "Why did he jump through!? We still have tests to run!"
Gear could now see what Aggron had jumped through after, a Vedalken covered in the same alloy that both Gear and he had. The Vedalken was bent over examining Aggron who appeared momentarily dazed. Apparently the Vedalken hadn't heard Aggron's thoughts. The Vedalken was turning to look away from Aggron and towards something behind it...
That's when Dannin and Gear were treated to the view of Aggron massacring the Vedalken that had approached him. Now there were two trying to flank Aggron, that or run past him to the portal.
Again Aggron lashed out killing one and knocking down the other that was now near that side's portal. Aggron was staring down the Vedalken who lurched towards the portal.
That's when things went wrong. The pad below Gear began to heat up violently and the portal itself went opaque and began flickering.
Dannin cried out, "What did you do!? What's happening!?"
Gear: I've not done anything I don't know whats happening. Its possible they closed it on their side or hell Dannin I don't have a clue. Ill see if i can reestablish the portal.
Gear focuses a bit to reopen the portal but feels that this one is probably in vain.
OOC: Hey there were more paw pad things like what i'm using right or is there only one because if there are more than one we kinda have to narrate why this opened to Esper rather than Naya which i think i opened to the first time.

Gear found that the pad would except the mana but only heat up as a result. Dannin looked worried asking, "What do we do!?"
The portal now remained a solid opaque white color as long as Gear kept channeling the mana and withstood the burning sensation the pad was providing.
When you had first found this lab I had described each portal as having an activation pad. The one you are using happens to be the Esper portal where that construct had been collecting the artifice of the lab.
Gear: We try another portal is what we do. I didn't open the portal to this place before so I suspect that we probably just try a different pad. One of these should bring us to a lush forest like plane I believe Although i'd prefer to not end up on that Grixis plane described by our friend before he departed. Death does not suit me.

"Then we should avoid the far portal. But do these portals all connect to the same plane? Will going through one allow us to find him? If they are one plane how will we find him once on the other side?" Dannin looked like he was filled with dozens of other questions he wanted to ask.
Gear: Dannin we will address everything in due time I guess we just need to figure out some things first. Anyway i've been thinking given what that guy was talking about i think there must be a way to move from plane to plane within their limited space. They shouldn't be that huge i hope. And then there is that large anomaly we saw earlier that looked like a converging force. Now lets try the next portal or do you have a better plan?

Gear notices Dannin's hesitation as he says, "No, that sounds like a fair plan..."
He looked at his feet wanting to stall then asked, "But don't you think we should send word back to Estark. Let them know what's going on. If we do that though there's the fact to consider that there are only two of us. So one would go and one would stay..."
Dannin looked up and then away saying, "And you're more qualified for exploration..."
Gear: Well i've done a lot of traveling alone as it is I suppose this should be no different. So Dannin I do agree, I will open the portal but you will need to sustain it so i can go through. Then well I guess we will see what things I find while you head back to Estark and possibly get the housemaster to send a larger research group to this site.
Dannin can hear a distinct pause in Gears speech as if he is contemplating things. If only that dam lizard had just waited a moment longer before flying off the handle at least then Gear would have had a companion. But then again the path of an artificer is one followed by very very few. In the mean time gear looks over the 5 portals and paw pads. Those other 3 portals still loom. What possibly lies beyond them he knows not. Still to figure out what could be beyond them starts pulling at Gear. He must know.
Gear Walks over to another one of the paw pads and takes a deep breath as he reestablishes his connection to all of the mana he needed to support the last portal. As the magnetic field builds up strongly Gear muses to the things he gets himself into.
Gear: Dannin when I get this portal going I will need you to support it. If those batteries work how I think they do you should be able to main line into the pad after i've charged it up. I will though check and see which plane we are entering i'm not going to go somewhere to openly hostile if i can help it.

Dannin nodded excitedly saying, "Ready when you are!"
Which portal are you going to activate? The one with the pad that has a red, black, and green gem? The one with green, blue, and white? Or perhaps the one with red, green, and white?
The portal flares to life as a connection is made between planes. On the other side it is nighttime. The vegetation looks the same as it did the last time he activated this portal. Dannin was already standing by with his mana batteries waiting for Gear to give the signal to power the portal.
Gear nods for Dannin to begin his process to power up the portal. This may not be the best location given what Gear remembers from before but at least its a start.
