Her spell seemed to be absorbed by the pyre, growing stronger and brighter. The Elemental simply let out a tormented scream as the flames crackled around it. It drew upon the pyre's flames, keeping it's own flames from burning out.
Zalara could sense the pain and fear oozing from the creature as it stared at her with what appeared to be sadness...
Your third turn. It is a creature for purposes of spells. The end of turn action was the pyre healing the damage on the Elemental like what would happen in a normal match. It's your call on how you wish to proceed here with the Elemental.
Can I tell whether for all intents and purposes my opponent has the normal copiable characteristics of an Inferno Elemental, or has it been enhanced in some way?
I don't want it to seem like I'm metagaming, but I'm pretty sure if I make the wrong call, you kill me next turn.
As the elemental is recovering from the effort of sending forth the three sparks, Zalara walks closer to it, conjuring another mana orb as she does so.
With a flourish of her staff, two of the orbs burst into flame, while the third crackles with lightning. They begin to slowly orbit the staff's head as she sweeps her arm upward, beginning a series of complex gestures tracing the shape of a mystical seal. Finally she lowers the staff and points it directly at the elemental's heart.
"Burn no more. This will end your pain."
The orbs flare with magical energy and discharge a searing blast.
Zalara's magic slams into the Elemental causing it to cry out in one last painful anguish as it fell to it's knees. With a final pained expression the Elemental falls face down scattering into a spray of sparks. The pyre that had sustained the Elemental quickly died down to soft glowing embers as the wildfire continued to rage on around her. Buried in the midst of the pyre of embers was a red crystal of sorts flashing with the surrounding flames flickering with the wind...
Zalara walks over to the crystal and kneels down, wincing at the pain from the fresh burns lacing her legs.
The crystal is hot to the touch, but she does not flinch as she picks it up and holds it in her outstretched palms. "How are you feeling?" she asks in barely a whisper, like a mother to her child.
With heavy heart, Zalara puts the crystal into her satchel. She then takes the time to call on more red mana, summoning an Earth Elemental to beat out the remaining wildfires.
I don't know if we can cast spells outside of combat, but seeing as I've already got 3 Mountains in play I'll take the liberty here.
Hours pass by as the Elemental moves about the wildfire destroying any foliage that could spread the flames. Finally as the sun begins it's slow decent in the west, Zalara and her Elemental are left alone in a charred landscape. The strain on her body from maintaining her connection to the mana and her summon leaves her with a pounding head ache. Fatigue feels like it could pull her off to an eternal slumber if she holds onto her ties much longer...
Seeing the Elemental's work is done, Zalara quickly releases her ties to the mana. She looks around for a relatively sheltered area, perhaps a stand of unburned trees, in which to spend the night.
Zalara had about two hours before the sun would set as she looked around the burnt forest. Just past three burning stumps to her west, she saw a small pond with a tiny island, lush green grass and a scattering of five untouched trees. If she wanted to spend the night there she could, she would just have to suffer having wet feet to cross to the island by the shallow end where some rocks were poking through the water.
Zalara headed toward the pond at once. Although she was too weary to risk another fight, it was either the shelter of the trees or to chance being exposed on the open road. When she reached the bank, she took a drink of the still-cool water, then scooped up handfuls of water to dab the burns on her arms and face.
She started across the rocks, keeping a firm grip on their slippery surfaces with her toes.
A small slip almost cost Zalara a bruised bottom and soaked clothes. Fortunately she caught herself with her hand causing only a small bruise on her left palm. Now across the water she was safely on the island. There was still an hour of light left at least...
Zalara spends her last hour of light constructing a crude shelter of leaves and twigs among the higher branches of a tree. When she is satisfied that it is reasonably waterproof, she says her meditations, thanking the elementals for a safe journey thus far, and soon falls asleep.
Zalara has a peaceful sleep until dawn when her dreams are filled with a singular flame flickering out of existence because it had nothing to burn to stay alive. Desperately the flame jumped onto the grass quickly burning through that fuel. But within seconds the flame was beginning to flicker out of existence. So again the flame threw itself onto dried out twigs. Again the flame burned through the fuel and again the flame moved desperately onto new sources of fuel. Eventually the flame was at the center of a forest wildfire burning brightly. This time it was snuffed out, no longer able to fuel itself...
Zalara awoke to the rumble of thunder on the horizon. Opening her eyes she could see grey clouds above, a good indication that it would rain today on her way back to Estark.
Zalara splashed across the stream and set off in a northwest direction. As the storm clouds gathered ominously, she hoped the little effigies would be all right.
She put her hand into her satchel and felt the inferno's gem, as cold and dead as coal. Desperately she tried to send it mind-messages, hoping her connection with the red mana would carry them through. Thoughts of the great House of Hammerheim, its walls of stone, its blazing hearths, rekindling the soul like a steaming-hot bowl of chicken soup. "Hang in there, just a little longer."
As she retraced her steps, she scanned the roads for a faster mode of transportation to Estark - a horse or carriage, perhaps.
A strange thing happened when Zalara opened her mind to the crystal with the mountains. A warmth began to radiate from the center of the crystal. A sense of yearning for a connection to be made, a bonding of the souls...
"You...you wish to form a pact with me?" she asked.
She removed the crystal from her satchel and stared at it: a beautiful red color, flecked here and here with amber-hued ripples. It was definitely radiating heat, though not the sharp burn she had felt upon picking it up. It was an almost soothing sensation.
Instinctively, she drew the crystal close and held it against her heart. Through the folds of her robe, it nudged against the coin of the House of Hammerheim.
Zalara could feel the bonding of the Elemental to the gem and her soul solidify. A sense of peace and warmth washing over her as she approached the city of Estark. One of the guards recognized her from when she had left and waved her on through...
Zalara has completed the binding ritual for the elemental and currently has the Inferno Elemental spell soul bound to her. She can keep this as her reward after talking to Jack in his shop or turn it in for the gold.
I award Zalara 3 experience, 1 for completing the bounty objective, 1 for enjoyable role-playing, and the bonus beginner experience. Your character should show up at Jack of all Trades to progress her storyline and report on the bounty.
