Xen looks up from the scarecrow he's investigating when he hears someone call out. There he sees an old and wise kithkin motioning for one of the scarecrows to be brought in. Smiling Xen took off his long coat and laid it on the ground next to the scarecrow that had been giving off the aura of magic and mana. Carefully Xen picked up the pieces placing them on his jacket. Once he had all of the parts he could find he bent down and slowly dragged his jacket towards the gate.
Stopping at the gate he looked around and asked kindly, "Where would you like me to place this scarecrow?"
Gaddock motioned towards one building. "Any of you who wish to investigate this strange behavior with me is free to. Daniel, can you show the rest to the Farsons' home?"
Daniel nods, and waits for the other four to sort themselves out.
Xen simply bent down and examined the remains of the scarecrow while opening his mind thinking,
I'll see what I can find out with these creatures. The ones that were giving off that aura of mana and magic have peaked my interest. Let me know what you can find out from the barricaded kithkin with your mental skills ok, Aramil?
And yes, no incantatrix for you. Or anyone. That class makes puppies cry. Mostly because they are the former Big Bads who have been Baleful Polymorphed into said puppies. By you. Because you're an incantatrix.

Yeah, I don't see her handling a pissing match in any way other than a duel.

I suppose it's true. Though the logistics implied in a human/Great Wyrm Prismatic Dragon pairing makes me shudder.
...Something tells me that even should all arcane casters in the world unite, that the Grease spell would NOT be sufficient.
Wynn draws a blue gem, its azure glow resonating with knowledge. "I think this spell might be our ticket in to this secluded family, I'm headed with you."

"Okay, I'll lead you to them," Daniel says, motioning to the group to follow as he starts across town.
"Mister Krensae, you expressed interest in helping the family. I suggest you make up your mind quick," Gaddock says, then follows Xen as he carries the remains into the house.
"Alright, pardon my vernacular, but what the hell happened out there?" Gaddock asked as Xen put the remains of the scarecrow on the table. It's a simple building. Two of the soldiers who had escorted the crew had joined Gaddock.

Daniel leads the four over to a building roughly in the middle of town. A soldier is outside, surrounded by a few concerned families. The soldier appears to be trying to talk to the Kithkin inside. The curtains are drawn on this house, and a few nails are poking out of the door frame.
Xen makes a few small adjustments as he places the scarecrow on the table roughly in the original shape. Then picking up his long coat he stepped to the door and flapped it a few times to get the dirt off. Turning around he walked back to the table slipping his long coat back on and examined the scarecrow while explaining, "Well. A great deal of events unfolded just now. For instance these scarecrows. They had been hiding within the wheat fields as our group made our way to the family that barricaded themselves indoors. I think they let their presence known to us."
Xen turned to Gaddock saying, "They had been radiating with magic, giving off the same feeling as mana, as though every part of their being was the mana found in the lands. This particular scarecrow appeared to be one of the stronger sources. This presence is what grabbed my attention. Alas as soon as I moved closer to investigate these creatures swarmed us, like bees or ants defending a hive. Probably more like ants considering the group interaction they displayed..."
Xen smiled sadly saying, "My companions had made short work of them before a peaceful resolution could be reached. I worry that my group may have been at fault for unwittingly antagonizing them by entering into 'their' territory. I wonder how they would have reacted had we slowly retreated and refrained from harming them...?"
Xen nods saying, "That is the other bit to note. They were found all through out the wheat fields. They could have attacked your people at any time before we were there. Instead they chose to attack when outsiders passed through..."
"Hmm... if, as you say, they were like ants, they may be satisfied with the territory they have," Gaddock says. "However, we haven't seen anything like this before you showed up. We do have a few of our people working out there right now..." he glances at one of the soldiers. He nods rapidly, and dashes out the door. "We haven't lost them yet, otherwise we'd have felt it. But like I said, we don't have a scarecrow like this, and it doesn't look like anything they make over in Goldmeadow. Even the Burrenton forges don't make anything like this. This wasn't made by Kithkin. I'm more worried about who made these, and are there more coming?"
Over near the house, Wynn is looking at the barred-off house. It's certainly a bit...menacing, to be honest. Still, without any better idea, she questions the guards.
"What do we know?"

The guard looks up at Wynn, glances at Daniel, and back up, his expression softened. It doesn't seem that Daniel's expression changed in any way. "They've been locked in there since the morning, and won't open the doors. We've tried to help, to comfort them somehow, but they've blocked us out."
As if anticipating the confusion in those who live on a plane with a day-night cycle, Daniel looks up and says "We call the morning the time when the sun starts to climb up in the sky from the horizon. They've been in there for several hours."
"Dora, come on out, I made that apple pie you keep going on about!" one of the women says at the window.
Wynn looks at the guard and thinks. This may be the perfect time to try something, but she wanted to know something first.
"Do we know if spells can get in and out of the house? I have something that might open up their minds if I can get a spell in there."

Xen thought about the scarecrows the Kithkin did use before asking of Gaddock, "And when you make your scarecrows what purpose and emotions are you investing into that creation? What feeling do you infuse them with? That may sound like a strange question to ask but think of it as a question one would ask of an overly protective farmer caring for his crop."
"We haven't tried spells yet," the guard says, "Admittedly, we use magical powders and mixtures, so they wouldn't be much help. If you think you have something, go ahead." He turns to the Viashino, "They won't answer anything much besides 'go away'."
——————————
Gaddock shrugs. "Most of the farmers have a sense of determination, and protection when they make them. I think one of them was made by some of the kithlings, and you know how kids can be," he smiles.
Xen leaned forward and asked Gaddock with genuine interest, "Tell me. What would be your first response or priority if you could only feel your family in the thoughtweft? If the rest of the village suddenly became blocked off from you and you felt all alone except for your scattered family?"
Gaddock looks rather surprised at the question, but thinks about it. "I'd probably feel confused, cautious. I'd try to find Daniel and his wife, and make sure they were safe, then find out why we were blocked out... why do you ask?"

"Hmm. Did any of them appear capable of speaking? I don't know which answer would be more frightening."

He looks back to Gaddock Teeg asking, "You say this is not one of yours but do your people make any kind of scarecrows?"
"Five or six in our fields, not dozens."

"Another way, perhaps to calm them.... but that is not exactly my way. Of course, breaking down the door is an option."

Sprout jumps out of Deraxas's pack and approaches the door with curiosity evident in his movements.
"Squeak?!" He kicks at the door experimentally.
