Saffi stops in a small room and speaks a single word under her breath. The far wall flashes blue before a portal appears on it. "There you are. Portal to Kamigawa. Don't lose the tile and remember to break it when you're ready to come back."

Someone once asked me why, when I talk about House Dimir, I don't put the word "the" in front of it.
At the time, I had no answer, but it just came to me.
Do we put the word "the" in front of God?

Mar smiles back, eager to get going. "Lets."
Without waiting for confirmation, he goes up to and hopefully through the portal. Hope this isn't too disorienting...
Saffi simply nods in response and whispers, "Good luck," just before the portal closes.
Mar and Alissi appear in a copse of trees just outside of a large village with a palisade around it. There are guard towers and stakes to stop charging horses. The road leading to the main gate passes close to the copse of trees.

Mar stumbles slightly after he appears in the copse. "That was... an interesting sensation."
After shaking his head to clear his sense of balance, he takes a long looks at his surroundings. "Looks like someone's at war." He walks to the edge of the copse to looks both ways down the road and leans on his staff. "Should we say hello?"
"We may be simple wanderers, but do those inside know that?" Nevertheless, Mar follows Alissi, though he keeps to the side of the road and checks for others as he walks.
The palisades are about nine feet high and made of wood.
Other than the pair of you, nothing is on the road. As you get closer, a voice calls down from one of the flanking towers, "Halt! Who goes there?!?"

Mar stops when he hears the voice, and leans on his staff. He looks up towards the tower and calls out an answer: "A pair of weary wanderers, who seek to find a sage who can help us in our quest. Would there be such a person here, or failing that, a place to stay the night away from the dangers of the road?"
"Hmph. Don't see what harm two of you can do. You may enter, but you will be accompanied by a guard for the duration of your stay." The gate creaks open and five men with bows stand on the other side, aiming at the opening. "Enter and quickly."

"Trusting people, I see," Mar mutters under his breath while still far enough away that he won't be heard. Still, he approaches and passes through the gate at a reasonably fast speed, expecting it to slam shut with a solid thud the moment he is completely though, and looks around at the inner area.
Mar's expectations are not far off the mark. The gate does indeed close quickly behind the entering pair. The guards shift their aim from the opening to the pair of magi. Beyond the gate are a couple of decent-sized buildings with the workings of a military encampment nearby. The rest of the town is beyond those two buildings. A guard approaches, but this one is not armed with a bow, just a sword. "It's not often that we get travelers out here. State your business."

Mar endeavors to look as nonthreatening as he is capable of as he answers, not wanting to anger a town full of armed soldiers unprepared. "We're just looking for information about the locations of a few places. We've traveled a long distance and haven't been in this area for long, and we're not sure where to go from here." Looking around briefly at the town once more, Mar continues "How goes your effort? We haven't arrived in the middle of anything, have we? We don't mean to... bother you, and can likely be on our way as soon as we figure out which way that is."
"Hm. What two locations? Perhaps we might know, or we might know someone who knows."

Mar's face takes on a serious countenance as he ponders the answer to this question. Either way, I get my goal. But if we deal with the bandits first, this town should be more willing to help, and it will reduce the chance of bandits bothering us in the future if we teach them a lesson now. So... "We should deal with the Bandits first," he answers.
The guard nods. "Just don't expect aid from us. Your success or failure is entirely your own. Is that understood?"

"Heads on stakes? How innefiecient." Mar mutters to himself. "Any particular kind of meat?" He asks the guard. "Should listen for the sizzle of cookery as well?" Mar's voice betrays not a single mote of sarcasm, sounding like a clueless wanderer and not like someone playing any sort of game at all. "Though it deosn't really matter. Thank you for your directions; I'm sure they're detailed enough to get us to where we're going."
Mar then pauses, waiting for his companion to speak or for the gates to reopen and allow passage.
The gate opens and the five archers on the ground bring their bows up and take aim at the opening. "Good luck."

The journey from the valley into the mountain range itself is uneventful and boring (unless you two wish to talk).
Once inside the range, the pair see three paths heading off, one straight ahead, the other two are heading diagonally away from the path. All look recently used.

As they approach the intersection, Mar slows down as he regards the three paths, eventually coming to a stop if nothing interferes. "What was it those scared soldiers said? Follow the heads on stakes?" He looks around, noting the lack of heads on stakes, before raising his head and sniffing at the air. "Bah. Should've pressed for a guide. This bandit has them too scared."
Mar starts to walk to the path that leads straight forwards, planning on examining the ground to see if he can tell anything about who used that path, and then examine the other wo paths in turn.
No odor of cooking meat yet? These paths, are the diaganol paths on different sides of the one that goes straight, or are they on the same side but on different angles?
Ti'rin said this splitting of the ways is encountered once we enter the mountain range. We're already in the mountains.
As Mar searches for clues to the proper path, he answers: "No, it's not the same. If they find us, chances are they'll try to attack us, and we still won't know where their lair lies. If we find them before they find us, we can prepare and launch a surprise assault, wiping them out before they can prepare." Mar pokes at the signs of passage with his staff, trying to decide if he can tell how many passed through each passage and looking for if they dropped anything, defining "anything" as anything from small objects to drops of blood, before he continues. "Besides, waiting for them to find us could take a long time, and the faster we finish with them the more impressed those villagers should be. If we can end the spectre of bandit attacks for them before too much time passes, we should be able to leverage this into a greater degree of helpfulness."
The diagonal paths flank the one that heads straight.
Upon further examination, the middle and right-directed paths have been used relatively recently. The one that heads to the left has not. Bloodstains mar the rocks on the edge of the rightmost path.

"Well, we can probably ignore the leftwards path for now. But this... this is interesting," Mar says as he bends down to peer at the blood on the rocks. Dabbing at the stains to test for freshness, Mar looks down the rightmost path, both to check for more bloodstains further down the path and just in case there's someone there, and if he doesn't spot more stains down that path he looks around from that point to see if he can find more. "But did someone fall here, or flee through here?" he asks to himself before rising.
Turning to Alissi, he states "I'm in favor of following the blood, unless you'd rather go down the middle path."
I don't plan on adding red to my repertoire anytime soon, and I know that as it stands I couldn't even coax a measly single uncolored generic mana from a pile of stones called a mountain, but there is a card I'm eventually going to be interested in acquiring that becomes more useful with more land types, so I'd like to know if I'm allowed to try and connect with these mountains we're in, or if basic lands are only available if you gain that color. Rather, I'd like to know if an attempt to commune with the mountain we're currently on to bond with it has any chance of success or if it would be a complete and total waste of time. I'd only need a single mountain, not the unlimited supply that comes with gaining a color, though admittedly I wouldn't have a use for it for about five more levels. Still, long term plans want to know.
