Finally, after a lengthy time of panting and coughing from her sore throat and through tears of both joy and sorrow, she says, "Will they ever stop, Tai? Will they ever just go away?"
Erynn sniffled a few more times before looking at the window once more, staring at it as if the warrior still stood there. "I hope they don't," she said, "If for nothing more than the opportunity to return the favor for what they've done to us."
Tai said nothing, but held Erynn even tighter. After a moment, he snapped his fingers. "OH!" He rummaged in his satchel a moment. "This is yours, I assume?" He said, pulling out the pendant.
Erynn continued to gather herself when Tai revealed the pendant. Her eyes lit up, and she smiled for the first time since their second reunion. "Yes..Tai...thank you," she said.
For several agonizingly quiet minutes, Erynn and Tai remain in silence.
Finally, both a relief and a piercing pain, Erynn speaks, "Tai...I need to go. I can tell that you need some time to yourself. If you need to talk later, we can, but I...I...I need to go."
Without waiting for a reply and fighting back unstoppable tears, Erynn quickly gathered herself and left the room.
Watching each agonizing step as Erynn leaves the room, Tai curls up onto his bed and cries bitterly....over his parents, over his love...all he has lost...
For several hours he is left to his own devices, his own thoughts, his own memories. He can almost even smell the sweet smell of his fallen beloved as he grieves.
A gust of wind through the open window brings the smell of pine and soil, and Tai can feel the all-too familiar sensation of being watched.
The scent of the pine seemed to calm Tai...life...death...rebirth...it did little to assuage his pain, but the knowledge that her spirit was still out there comforted him some...as were his mother and father...all watching over him.
Finally, the horrors of the day drift from Tai's mind as his body succumbs to slumber.
