For a brief second, Syrene's face darkened and her eyes narrowed ever so slightly. It had come and gone in a flash and her face resumed its neutral and professional expression. Then raising her head she laughed, "Then I am wasting my time here, and so are you. I was wrong abut you. You are fool. For the True mark of an assassin lies in the heart and mind. It does not present itself in on mere flesh for all to behold. You are a fool." The last four words were not spoken loudly, but it was clear and authoritative. With that, she stood up and swept towards the door.

She scarcely had time to blink before Umbra stood in front of the door, preventing her from leaving, "while what you say is true, there is a bloodline of assassins that have banded together for centuries. The actual blood has become so diluted that none of us are actually related anymore, but we do all share one thing in common: a small marking that is the last trace of the greatest league of assassins this planet has ever known. Please, listen to me and trust me."
Syrene stopped to consider for a moment, then sat back down onto the chair. It occurred to her that in his haste to stop her from leaving, he let slip who he really was: an assassin. He seemed eager to find out and it had perked her curiosity. In the mean time, she tried to recall whether she had any mark upon her skin since she was born.
"Personally, I find that such legends of bloodlines and ancient alliances is of little importance. it sounds as though you are merely holding onto past glories, refusing to moving on into the future. Still, I find your story rather interesting. Perhaps you could go into greater detail?"

As she pondered marking, she remembered the inexplicable triangular birthmark on her right shoulderblade. It was only a couple inches, but nobody could explain to her how and why it got there.
Umbra was staring into her eyes, "I cannot reveal all of our secrets, but our league has remained a secret since the settling of Disegreth. Our actions are dictated not by our impulse but instead by divine forces. I know none of this makes sense right now, but if you'd please just let me confirm your status, I will tell you everything."
"Divine Forces? To tell the truth, I have trouble believing that. Perhaps it would be simpler just for you to prove that you yourself possess the mark. After all, you seem to use the words 'we' and 'our' rather freely." Still, Syrene could feel herself starting to believe. She could almost feel herself wanting to believe. To believe that she was destined to be different to be special.

Umbra frowned, "you're a skeptic. As much as I hate to admit it, it's a quality that only a few assassins possess; the ability to see through facades." Reluctantly, Umbra slid off his over-robe to show that he was skinny and fit. He was wearing a tight black shirt and slim black pants as he put his hand on his belt buckle and started to undo it, "shall I show you the mark?"
"Yes, it would be best if you do. And skepticism has saved my life more than once. I prefer to think of it as more of a... cautious distrust." Even as she said this, she prepared herself for the potential disappointments. After all, things rarely go according to plan.

Umbra undid his belt and peeled the edge of his pants back, revealing a triangular mark on his hip, pointing inward to his pelvis. It was the exact same shape as Syrenes.
Shaking her head slightly, she revealed the mark on her right shoulder blade, somewhat self-consciously. "Well, that settles that. Perhaps you should move on."

The mysterious assassin fastened his belt and offered his hand to Syrene, "welcome to the League, Syrene. First, I would like to see you get out of those tired traveller's garments and wear something more... classy."
Holding one of her hands up she said, "Hold on, before that, why don't you tell me a little more about this League. After all, I never said anything about joining anything. Besides, I always work alone."

Umbra studied her carefully, "we are know as the Sustril and our founder was aboard the original colony ship that landed on Disegreth. He was a mason and enjoyed building the founding buildings that would become the Church and other iconic structures here. However, he was also a devout clergyman who believed in the power of God and asked to be guided by the Lord's omniscience."
Nodding carefully, Syrene listened intently to the story, though thoroughly unsure about where this would lead her.

"There's not much else I can tell you without showing you" informed Umbra, "but do you trust me enough by now to know that I won't harm you in any way?"
Syrene considered this carefully. The time of caution is over and it is time to be bold. Then nodding her head slightly, she whispered, "Yes..."

Umbra nodded and walked past Syrene, away from the door and into the back of the room. He withdrew a small dagger from the back of his belt that had been cleverly concealed. With a grunt, he jammed it into a book. For a moment, nothing happened and Syrene contemplated leaving.
Something changed. Two of the walls began sliding back, sending a bellow of heat permeating through the room.
Cringing slightly as the wall of heat hit her, she wondered in a distant corner of her mind how the walls worked. Feeling slightly uncertain, she looked between gap in the walls.

Her hand instinctively went to her mouth as she gasped and saw an entire factory behind the wall of the luxurious room. Umbra was standing, gauging her reaction as she saw dozens of people working on building something. Without a closer look, it would be impossible to see what they were working on.
She quickly resumed her usual, unfazed expression though the thoughtful observer could still discern her uncertainty and surprise. It would seem as though nothing is as it seems in this place. Glancing at Umbra to watch his reactions, she walked forward into the factory.

Umbra walked closely behind her to the factory as she felt the immense heat engulf her body, instantly making her perspire. Many of the workers were huddled over rectangular shaped moulds and scraping small red cubes. As Syrene looked around, she understood what they were all producing. Bricks.
Frowning slightly, she asked Umbra in a slighly incredulous tone, " And may I ask why you have a secret brick production facility in you dwelling?"

Umbra laughed, an uncharacteristic move for the reserved assassin, "I will explain more later. For now, you can think about my story and we can go get you changed into something more... official."
Syrene wasn't interested. Somewhat absent-mindedly she replied, "No. Thanks for the offer though. I prefer to stick with my traveler's clothes. For me, form follows function. I'm not really concerned with appearances. Anyway, you still haven't told me much about this organization of yours."

Umbra apologized, "I'm sorry but I don't feel comfortable talking to someone with out the traditional garb. How about I tell you about it while you change? That way we're not wasting any time."
Syrene immediately got the impression that he was merely playing for time. Her suspicion started to grow again."Well, I came here looking for a job. This is rather... more than I bargained for. Excuses like that won't get you very far in the world out there. Are you going to answer or not? If you are not, I am wasting my time."
It was harsh but she wanted answers, and fast.
