Dante had only known the girl for a few hours, though he had connected with her in a way he hadn't connected with people he had known for years. Not only because she was just a few years younger than him but because he could see himself in every word that she spoke.
Her name was Kaith and he found her sobbing underneath a tree, cursing Disegreth for taking away everything she had. Kaith was still weeping with her head pressed against his shoulder as she explained to him how the war had taken everything from her: her father, her brother and her family's pride.
The girl was the 22 year old daughter of a successful merchant who specialized in selling illegal goods. It was only 3 days ago when her family disappeared into the fray and she still didn't know how to compose herself. There she sat, her crimson hair a mess and her grey sweater drenched with tears, leaning on Dante and telling him everything through her intermittent sobs.
"Shhh...shhh...it's okay...it hurts, I know...I wish I could say it'll get better..." He stopped for a moment, trying to figure our what to say. "All I can promise you is that you'll learn to cope."
The girl sniffled as he looked at him with puffy eyes and soaking cheeks, "Thank you, Dante. I don't know why you came and talked to me... but... I really appreciate it."
Dante smiled. "I came to you because I've been you...I am you. I was younger. Much, much younger...my parents just came back from a raid...and some Sancti...I suppose they decided they needed revenge. My mother...my father...my brothers...they killed them all...I watched it from a trap door in the floor..." his eyes belied a great deal of pain. "All because of this stupid war..."
Her head slid down his shoulder as she laid down on his leg, "I'm sorry to hear that, Dante. I'm glad that you decided to talk to me. It's just... normally I can handle myself, but this time..." her voice trembled as more tears welled up, "... this time, it all happened at once and... I-I have nobody left and nobody to trust."
After a few moments of wordlessly holding each other, the girl took a deep breath, "thank you... I'm probably wasting your time now... I should... erm... go."
She raised herself up and put her head on his shoulder, not really caring about the over affectionate nature of her movements, "are you sure? You don't need to stay... I... think... well... I don't deserve to have someone who wants to listen to me, anyways."
Dante leaned back and gave her a rather stern look. "Don't say that. Everyone deserves to have someone...someone to talk to...a shoulder to cry on. Everyone."
Dante hugged back, tightly...it felt nice to trust someone, and feel trusted again. "I just...I wish this damned war would just end. Too much blood has been shed, too many have felt the pain of loss. It's ludicrous! Nothing is gained by it, other than a disagreement in viewpoints...we say yes, they say no...why do people have to die over it? Why?!" Coming back from his rant, he looked back into Kaith's eyes. He could see the renewed pain his pontification was stirring up again. "I...I'm sorry...I've made peace with my losses, but not the reason."
She nodded, her cheek rubbing against his shoulder, "you're right but... what can we do to stop it? The Immortalis have this place under their command and the war won't stop even if people want it to."
Fury rose up in Dante. "We stop! We refuse! We seek strength in unity...not division...we...we..." He felt weak...the futility of everything he said creeping up on him. "I...don't know. But there has to be a way to end it. There just has to..."
The girl whimpered, "I know, I wish for the same things, but it would be impossible to unite against the Immortalis. They control every facet of our lives and rising against them would mean a complete collapse of our society."
"And what kind of a society do we live in now? Where if we walk away from someone, we're not even sure if we'll see them again? Well, breathing, anyways?"
The girl tensed at his statement, obviously still fragile form her own experiences. She tried to speak but failed to find her voice as she cried another tear.
She stood up, mustering up enough courage to present herself as though she hadn't had a major breakdown. "Thank you, Dante... you don't know how much I appreciate everything you've done for me. I know we just met but if there's anything you ever need... and I mean anything, just ask and I'll do it for you without hesitation."
