Despite the sweat rolling down his forehead and his heart beating furiously, Garth's hands remained steady as he slowly eased the lock open. It clicked satisfactorily and as he reached the door, he did a mental checklist of his preparation. He perspired within his dark cloak as his gloved hands pushed gently.
The people who lived here left the home every day at the same time, making them easy targets. There was the father, a wealthy businessman who was suspected of selling arms to Sancti fighters in the Dead Zone. The mother was the owner of a brothel on the outskirts of the city, one that attracted the highest spenders. Lastly, there was the stunning daughter of the family. Lorien El Cielio, the princess of the family and one that was as cunning as she was beautiful. As the door gently opened, Garth couldn't help but be happy to be stealing from such an evil family.
The home was massive... and surprisingly unguarded. With some chagrin Garth noted that they probably would be able to replace anything that he took. Above a large fireplace, a portrait of the powerful painting was hung.
Everywhere he turned in the large entry room, the thief could see things of value... so much that he could practically double his income by simply filling his pockets. Jewels, metals, coins... everything he could possibly imagine.
There were so many rooms, he could hardly count them, all with their doors shut and all of them looking equally exquisite. he figured that the most important locations would be located upstairs, where the bedrooms and offices would be.
There was a long hallway upstairs with 8 or 10 doors lining it, all of them closed like they were downstairs. The house was in immaculate condition, totally free of any dust or clutter.
It opened silently, revealing a large room with deep red walls. Judging by the tight clothes strewn haphazardly onto the floor and the general messiness of the place, it was likely Lorien's room. As he peered around it, he could see jewels and expensive artifacts as well as a small desk with an open journal on it.
As his hand touched the knob of the next door, he heard a woman's voice behind him. It was unwavering and defiant not at all fearful, "put those back. I don't care what else you take but don't you think a girl's journal is a little bit personal?"
To his shock, it was Lorien herself that stood in front of him, wearing nothing but a towel to cover her slender body and holding a sword at the ready. Despite the gleaming sword that was ready to impale him, he couldn't help but admire the stunning girl wearing next to nothing; her light brown hair was mid-length and wet as her deep green eyes peered at him with conviction, "I don't have a boyfriend. Now put those pages back."
"Really?" she asked in a taunting tone, "because I think I'm the one who's setting the rules around here. Don't tell me what to do... I could have simply killed you but I was afraid of staining those pages. I suppose I could just go straight for somewhere that won't stain as much..."
Lorien lowered her sword, pointing the shining tip directly toward Garth's groin, "last chance..."
All his moves went according to plan... until he realized that in that spilt second that it took for him to secure her wrist, she had turned the sword around. With painful realization, Garth could feel the tip of the blade pressed against his leg.
Lorien sighed, "I'll admit that you're talented but you forget that my mother runs a brothel... I'm used to *******s like you trying to get their upper hand on me. Go ahead, cop a feel if you want... take anything from this place... just put those pages back."
"No, but I think it's a little more intimidating, don't you think?" She smiled triumphantly and leaned against her doorframe, making sure he put them back.
"Yeah, whatever" she said, happy to see them back. "You want coffee or something?" Even though he had just broke into her house and stole from her room, Lorien seemed rather unphased by the fact that she was standing in nothing but a towel in front of a complete stranger.
"Thanks" she said eyeing him carefully as she led him down the stair into the kitchen. She placed a pot of water on the stove, leaning against the counter and showing off her 'assets' as she spoke to him, "so do you want money or something? If that's all you needed you could have asked... I just hate it when people look through my personal stuff."
She shrugged, "I don't see them much... they're rarely home and it's certainly not easy being the daughter of them. Every person thinks i'm either a w**re or a smuggler when I'm a lot more than that. Whatever, though, they leave me alone and I don't meddle in their affairs." Lorien eyed him carefully, "mind if I ask you a couple things now?"
"Well fire away" she said, turning slowly and pouring the coffee into an expensive looking press, "we're not as interesting as you'd think. Especially me... I just read books and hit on guys. Not all it's cracked up to be, I tell you."
"You'd be surprised what I do for guys when I first meet them" she stated with a seductive wink before feigning innocence, "like... making them coffee even though I know all they're thinking about it what they can steal and what's beneath this towel."
Her bluntness was staggering in its accuracy.
"I'm sure" she said with a playful smile as she seductively reached for the edge of her towel, holding the part where it was tucked in a holding it up, "so you're saying that you're not even a little curious?"
Lorien smiled as she removed her hand and laughed, "well I'm surprised that you haven't. I'd much rather you steal my towel and even my body than to look in my journal." The girl shrugged, "that's where my heart is spilled... everything else is expendable."
"Well I only left it open for a few minutes while I went to shower... normally it's hidden where not even you could find it." She sighed, "well I'm glad you put it back. I would have hated to kill such a cute guy with so much talent." Lorien looked over her shoulder and looked back at Garth, "coffee's ready. Do you want it hot or do you like it to cool down before you taste it?"
"No... only the ones who get too close to my heart." Her words were carefully planed, as if to give him a very stern warning that he could get away with anything he desired so long as he stayed away from her emotions.
Lorien poured two cups of coffee and walked forward, getting very close to him as she handed him the coffee, "enjoy, thief. Do you mind if I go change or do you like me in this towel?"
"Broken?" she scoffed, "no, not broken. I just... don't let guys get close enough to even have a chance at breaking it." Lorien leaned back against the counter, seemingly forgetting that she had intentions to change, "what about you, Garth. Why do you get off on breaking in to homes? Surely you must find some thrill in it..."
"Huh..." said Lorien with a curious expression, "tell me stories... I want to hear what kinds of things you've done with your abilities. If I could turn invisible... well... there would be a lot less bad people in this world. So, Garth, what's the craziest thing you've ever abused your powers for?"
"Hmmm..." she said, looking serene, "I think everyone has a lot that they don't show. I prefer more... subtle means of reading people's secrets." The beautiful daughter smiled, "and most guys will tell you everything they know if you give them the right motivation."
"Which?" she asked, "reading you or seducing you? I'm pretty sure I could do either, but I think it would be more fun for both of us if I did the latter."
