She looked down and groaned, wondering if he was back working with her--she didn't know why she had suddenly become jealous.
Oh, yes you do, she berated herself. Don't fall for him. Not again. Her logical voice spoke up. She rolled her eyes and shrugged. "Maybe it'll be different this time," she figured aloud. "But I'm not gonna make it easy on him." Resolved, she smirked a little and looked back at the lab. She would've gone back had she felt more sober, but she knew she would have to show up in the morning and she would definitely have a hangover in the morning.
She could see that a single light was on, illuminating one window. It was unusual to think that there were actually people working later than her on this evening, and she wondered what on Disegreth they could possibly hope to accomplish at this hour.
Fatigue was slowly setting in on Sylvia as she sorted out her thoughts.
She decided to inquire about it tomorrow, though a part of her still suspected the pair of them being more involved than he let on, if only to let him off the hook in Sylvia's book.
She was too tired to care too much, going back inside and undressing, preferring to sleep naked, like most evenings.
The next day, she would wake very slowly--her head was pounding and she was not really a morning person.
In fashion typical of Disegreth, her home was very brisk. Her skin was taught on every inch of her body and she started to remember why it wasn't always a good idea to sleep without any clothes on.
The day was overcast and she had slept much later than usual. Nobody at the lab would notice her being late, but it was unlike her to not be punctual.
Fortunately, she'd been accustomed to the cool weather, and her blankets helped to stave off any chilliness. She merely enjoyed the freedom the feeling gave her.
She finally dragged herself out of bed and noted the time, and, groaning, quickly got up and set about showering first, then getting dressed while she packed a small lunchl she quickly ate a small breakfast as she walked outside.
Sylvia tried not to think too hard about last night, only knowing that if she was going to give this Moroy a shot, she had to be careful--she was still wary. Despite her headache, she dressed punctually; long, durable pants, her usual red vest top, and her long lab coat. Her hair was pinned up in the back into a bun; she looked far different from last night.
As she walked into the institute, she hoped people wouldn't notice her tardiness. Damned wine, she scowled.
A few people nodded at her as she entered the lab. As usual, it was organized chaos with every person moving in one direction or another, tapping their chins, stroking their hair or doing some other unconscious habit while they thought critically.
Sylvia quickly strode towards her own lab--her private workspace. The humidity was always a little higher in here, with the constant steam she used in her studies. She sighed and set her things down, sitting and just relaxing for a moment. No one gets to work right away when they come in.
As she prepared herself for work, she was startled to see a single flower in a test-vial sitting on her workbench. A note was under it, "thanks again for the employee bonding. It's good to have a friend around the lab."
She blinked and took the vial, then smiled a little, admiring the flower's bright color. That guy was smooth, alright. Still, she didn't mind the affection.
She put the flower into her lab pocket and got to work, writing down her arcane scripts and trying to theorize new ways to form ice augmented with fire, without melting it, or clever forms of steam. The usual rigamarole. She would often get lost in just the paperwork alone some days.
It was the first time for a long time that her mind actually began wandering. She found it hard to keep focus on such mundane tasks as her heart beat quickly, thinking of what other possibilities there were at the lab today. It would take a great deal of concentration to separate her work-related thoughts and her socially-related thoughts.
She tried hard, but she knew she was going to have an off day for the rest of the day unless she found Moroy. She decided to take a break--thankfully being in R&D meant you could take more than one, occasionally--and look around for him, starting in the labs usually for Electric research.
It wasn't long before she heard the familiar giggling of the mousy girl in one of the labs. She thought she could here Moroy's voice, but couldn't identify anything he was saying to garner such a ruse out of Etna.
The giggling stopped and Moroy opened the door, his hair still spiked. Etna had a hand over her mouth, muffling her laughter.
Moroy smiled, "good morning, Sylvia. I didn't see you at the meeting this morning."
Sylvia flashed a friendly smile and looked down a bit. "Well, I had a late night. I just wanted to thank you for the meal and for the flower." She looked at Etna with a slight smirk, then peeked inside. "More research on this fabric in here today?"
"Yeah, Etna is wearing it for the first time" he replied, taking Sylvia's hand and leading her into the room.
Etna warily glanced at his overtly flirtatious move but kept the conversation strictly business, "We're getting a lot closer to making it work, but right now it's a little bit... ticklish." Both Etna and Moroy chuckled at her understatement.
She smiled and walked in, taking a good look around the lab and then to her outfit, arching a brow. "So, any idea for practical applications? A cloth that.. stiffens when electricity is coursing through it, hm? Well, stick enough joules into anything and it'll writhe around, I suppose.." She didn't let go of Moroy's hand, but her mood became a bit more professional.
His hand slid out of hers as he walked behind her, ever so slightly brushing his fingers across her lower back. "Well we hope to make it respond to use it like an exoskeleton when the Sancti attack. It will certainly decrease mobility, but it would be a good defence against a projectile."
He motioned to Etna, "let's try again."
The girl stood with her arms spread as her fingertips sparked and spread across the skin-tight suit on her. It was a deep green and looked like it was custom fitted for her as it contoured to her body perfectly. The suit stiffened for a moment before shaking sporadically. She giggled again before unintentionally moaning softly. Her face flushed red as she stopped the current.
Sylvia's eyes shot open a little as she felt him brush past, but she said nothing, hoping she wasn't blushing at all. Watching this magician and his lovely assistant made her watch carefully. After her response, she almost got curious about how it really felt in that thing--but her professional look made her face hardly show it.
"Interesting. Armor when you need it, not when you don't. You just have to keep it from getting too powered up."
She rubbed her chin and looked back at Moroy, turning to make sure his eyes were on her face and not elsewhere. "It looks promising, and I'm already getting another idea for this fabric, but lightning's not entirely my forte."
"Nor mine" responded Moroy haphazardly as he stood against a wall and crossed one leg over the other, "anything different this time?" he asked, directed at Etna.
The girl was breathing heavily, "well that was certainly a different sensation, and certainly one that I wouldn't want in the middle of a battle. Next time I pilot this thing, remind me to put some clothes on underneath, okay?"
Moroy smiled and shot a guilty glance toward Sylvia, "will do."
Sylvia arched a brow at him, shooting the man a wry smirk, turning back to her. "Doesn't seem like some areas would require the extra... protection.." She moved closer to Etna and circled around her as she stood. "Seems that you could afford to lose it on some creases in the outfit; it would increase maneuverability and still provide protection in the major areas. Not to mention it would avoid any.. excess reactions." She stopped and looked back to Moroy--he could tell she was highly interested in this suit.
Etna nodded, "good idea. I'll be right back... I'm a little anxious to get this off." The girl disappeared around a corner, out of their sight to change.
Moroy didn't budge, still standing against the wall with one leg over the other, "so... what did you think? I crafted the suit myself."
"It looks promising, but did you ever think we could apply the fabric to, oh, I don't know... a cloak?" She looked back at Etna, then to Moroy. She slowly walked over to him--he noticed a shake in her hips and a growing smile on her face. Her eyes seemed to pierce his as she walked closer. "Tell me that little tart isn't...involved with you?"
"We considered making a cloak, but the fabric just raises up when we pass the current through it, making it an awkward defence."
He stared right back, getting up of the wall and walking toward Sylvia, "she's not involved. We've been friends for longer than I've been able to spell and the closest we've ever been has been taking the measurements for that suit. I assure you that we're good friends and colleagues. Nothing more and nothing less... not that it should matter to you as a fellow employee, right?"
"Well, that's good, but I'm sure you could've had her if you wanted to." She looked back. "As for the cloak, why not try a mesh underwire frame to segment the fabric? Anchor the cloak to the ground, and.. oh, hell. Do you have the cloak on you?" She looked around the lab.
