By now, everyone who worked at the lab had either gone home or gone to sign up for the Great War. As usual, Sylvia had the only light on in the lab, reviewing her work as somnolence slowly set in. Her eyes fluttered as she went over the results of the day's experiments but her insatiable curiosity and vigilance kept her awake. He gloves started to quiver ever so slightly as she realized she hadn't eaten in ours and her body demanded food. Right after I'm done this she told herself. Her eyes fluttered once again and her head bobbed. Sleep slowly crept up on her until one she was woken abruptly by a light at the other side of the lab turning on. That's unusual, there's not usually anybody else here this late...
Sylvia blinked the sleep from her eyes and put her feet down, slowly turning in her chair to peer around, checking if anyone was around. Who knows. Maybe it's another shut-in.
She didn't speak just yet--she wanted to see who would come in.
There were too many things in her way to see who they were but she could hear two voices, one male and one female, making pleasant conversation. It was inaudible for the most part, but they sounded like they were talking about some sort of project.
Sylvia craned her head, then sighed, not happy to have left her work, though silently grateful for a chance to break her focus to grab a bite, and slipped closer, her curiosity getting the better of her.
The two had sat down now and were laughing amongst themselves, still out of her sight. By her estimation they had probably moved into one of the nooks where some of the magnification equipment was housed, a place where she wouldn't be able to see them until she was right beside them.
If these two are moonlighting in the lab I'm gonna fry someone. Sylvia slowly moves towards the nook, stretching her fingers and popping her knuckles a little, keeping her casting hands loose.
Sylvia could hear them giggling as she approached, but to her relief they were sitting beside each other, watching something through a magnifying glass that was dancing around sporadically. The man was casting some sort of spells, perhaps water, that was having a bizarre effect on whatever was under the glass.
Sylvia arched a thin red brow and leaned around the corner, peeking in and eyeing the pair. "What in the name of nalaar is going on in here? Research, I hope?"
She tried to figure if she knew these two from the institute.
Both of them were completely unknown to her. They both jumped as she startled them, the man's hands ready to attack.
His shoulders slumped and offered his hand to shake, "Wow, you scared me. I'm Moroy and this is Etna." Moroy was younger, probably barely 20 and was thin but well toned. His lab coat was slim fitted and Sylvia could see that he had a firm frame. His hair was short and a deep blue, his eyes were similar but had a green hue.
The woman timidly greeted Sylvia, "hi." She was short and slight, probably about Moroy's age. Her hair was a platinum blonde and her attire was loose fitting.
"Hmph, I'm Sylvia, and what are you two doing up over here? This isn't a playground, you know." She eyed them sternly, though she was only about their age--she only gave off a feeling of authority around here because of her devotion to her work, and her generally utilitarian attitude.
"We were hired to make a new type of material. What we're working on is something that stiffens when electrical current moves through it" replied Moroy, "we're getting closer but our latest prototype needs water and electricity to work, and it just jiggles around rather than stiffening."
Etna giggled, "quite comically, I might add."
"Hm." Sylvia arches a brow and eyes the strange object a little and sighs. She's frazzled, and these two interlopers aren't what she needs. "Don't make a mess when you start necking." She said with a slight smirk on her red lips as she walked out, fixing her lab coat and running her fingers up, loosening her hair from the bun holding it back and did a classic hair flip to loosen up. She exited the lab and walked to get something to eat.
She could hear footsteps running behind her and Moroy called out, "Hey, we're not like that, okay?! We're doing research and..."
He paused as he caught up with her, trying to get her to stop, "...I wouldn't mind getting to know some of the people I'm working with. For you to be still working this late, you've got to be one of the higher-ups. Can I treat you to dinner?"
Sylvia's gait hardly changes as Moroy rushes over to her. She sighs and eyes him with her bright blue eyes. "Dinner? What kind of research is that?" She finally stops and sighs; she normally would've blown a guy like this off, but she's been told by her superiors to try and be nicer to her co-workers. She takes a deep sigh, and looks at him, still looking skeptical as to his sincerity, but she checks the time. "Why not.. I'm hungry, and as long as you're offering."
"Consider this some employee relations rather than research, alright?" Moroy stated as he smiled. Inwardly, Moroy's mind was racing, she's feisty but you can tell she's smart. Be careful with this one. "Do you mind if I pick the place?"
Etna called to Moroy from the door, sounding agitated, "don't be gone too long! We've still got a lot of new things to try out!"
I'll bet, Sylvia glances back a little at Etna, then fixes her piercing gaze back on Moroy. "As long as you're paying, and I like it, though I would like to get out of this coat and wash up, first. I'm sure I can meet you somewhere," she arched a brow, waiting for his reply. I hope he doesn't read too deeply into this; there's something about this guy.
"Ah, women" described the man, "no matter how pretty you look, you always insist on 'washing up'. I was thinking we could go to a place not far from here called Graas. It's kind of small, but it's quiet and it's open late. The food's pretty good too. It's about two block north and a block east of here. Does that sound fine to you?"
She'd heard of the place, but she wasn't about to interrupt him. She tried to ignore the comment, but she found it hard to conceal a scowl. "That's fine--forgive me for wanting to be clean and wear comfortable clothing at a restaurant. I'll meet you there in an hour. After all, we don't want to keep Etna waiting all night." She flashed a sardonic smirk and walked past, her eyes looking back a little with a growing grin; she wasn't used to attention, at least not to men asking her out right off the bat.
When Sylvia looked back, she could see Moroy standing with a smile that was coy but expressed his excited acquiescence. Moroy turned and walked back into the lab, probably to avoid Etna's rage.
The evening was dark and torches lined the streets. A cool breeze blew through Sylvia's hair, elegant in its gentleness. Her place wasn't far away from the lab, which was convenient given her predilection for long nights at the office.
Sylvia sighed happily and ran her fingers throug her hair--it had been a long day and she would be glad for this change from her usual uninteresting evening ritual. She made it back to her place--a small apartment, packed to the brim with books, scrolls, portraits, personal effects, and creations preserved in ice, covered in glass cases.
Once inside, she unbuttons her coat and sighs, throwing it to her sofa and moving to her bedroom to get some clothes together--she couldn't remember the last time she'd been out to eat with someone. The last time she had been alone, spoiling herself.
Picking out a dress she then undressed and showered, washing before getting ready--she wasn't for much makeup, excepting some bright ruby lipstick. Her best feature, her eyes, were best left alone, and her wild red hair she liked to tease a little--but she always let it fall naturally, like the wild fires she controlled.
She picked a long black dress, with shoulders, showing almost no cleavage; she wasn't on a date, was she? Employee relations, she kept reminding herself.
Sylvia had been inside for less than an hour but when she left her apartment, she noted that the rain had begun drizzling down, still blowing gently in the breeze. Disegreth was notorious for rapidly changing weather and it seemed like no matter how well you prepared, nature would always throw something in your way.
She groaned and decided to pull on her gloves and try one of her more recent casual inventions. She clapped her hands together and focused her energies, forming ice from the rain outside her door and then making it grow into a crystalline umbrella. Then she formed a ring of light flame around the edge, to keep her warm, and provide some light. She lifted her stylish umbrella and walked toward Graas, keeping an eye out for Moroy.
The rain slid over the surface of the ice, some of it clinging and freezing to the top. She looked rather silly dressed in rather formal attire with a clear umbrella which looked almost novel. A few people passed her in the streets wordlessly. She noted that ever since the Immortalis' speech, there were a lot more people out in the evenings and none of them had any interest in conversation. Not that she was one who liked a passing social encounter.
When she arrived at Graas, Moroy was already seated, looking over a menu. She glanced at the time, noting that she was a few minutes late. Her colleague was dressed in a trim fabric jacket with a hooded sweater underneath. His deep blue hair was styled in a messy but intriguing fashion. She had to admit, he could certainly dress well for an academic.
When he saw her enter, he stood and smiled warmly. He moved to the seat across from her, pulling out in a chivalrous fashion. The man conducted himself with both hubris and sincerity in a way that was very very unique.
Sylvia shattered the umbrella as she came to the door, and sighed as she noticed she was late--she preferred to be punctual, especially when she set the time.
As she came to Moroy, she smiled politely and nodded to him, then took the seat, nodding to him. "Thank you, I'm sorry for being so late, had to prepare for the weather." She eyed him carefully--she was still not sure what he had in mind. Still, she sat up straight and fixed her dress; obviously he looked up to her, so she didn't want to disappoint.
"Not a problem" replied Moroy earnestly as he sat down across from her. He took a quick moment to look her over before an offering obligatory statement, "you look lovely this evening."
Trying to let the line slide-by as mere politeness, he quickly changed the topic, "so are you always working late into the night?"
