The triad didn't say anything for a few moments, understanding that they had been having the best week of their lives while a war raged in a land that they were travelling to. It dawned on them, like jumping into a pool of freezing water, just how dangerous their mission was. As if to comfort her and himself, Moroy reached for Sylvia's hand as they walked in quiet contemplation.
Sylvia bit her lip and looked down as she walked with them, taking Moroy's hand. She squeezed it tightly.. then looked at him. She loved him more than anything, and realizing that this trip could be...
No.. I won't even think of it.. gods, poor Etna.. she doesn't even have someone like I do.. I've been taking it for granted.
She didn't say anything, but she slowly reached and took Etna's hand with her free hand, looking at her and giving a slight reassuring smile.
When Sylvia touched Etna's hand, a small spark was sent up her arm. Etna looked at Sylvia with eyes that were so afraid but her walk showed nothing but boldness. As the spark tingled along Sylvia's skin, the adjunct understood her friend's fear and the depth of her emotion.
She jerked a little, but seeing Etna's courage made her feel more bold. She squeezed her hand and held it more firmly, wanting to be there for her. Sylvia had only been to the Dead Zone once before, for her Battlemage final exam--which she failed. She was lucky to come out of it alive.
In true socialite form, Moroy broke the silence, "so how are you two ladies going to fare without the full usage of your accendo? I know it's going to be hard not to be able to access my power on a whim." Her fiance squeezed Sylvia's hand, reminding her of what he was capable of doing 'on a whim'.
Sylvia stifled a giggle. "We'll manage.. I don't need accendo to impress you." She squeezed his hand back and grinned. "To be honest, I think if we stick together, we can channel accendo better. So I'm not worried about that.." Sylvia was worried about people from Sancti--she had nothing against them, except that they wanted to kill her just for being Nomeni.
"I just hope we don't run into any problems right away. After a few days, I might get used to the accendo flow but for the first couple of nights, I don't know how much power I'll have and that's a little frightening" stated Etna as her hand slipped out of Sylvia's and defensively clung to herself.
The walk was a good way to the Dead Zone and the threshold was across a vast, legendary river at the center of myths and lore that had captivated every Nomeni child.
Approaching the closely-guarded and observed river, Sylvia couldn't help but stop, and wasn't surprised when the others had too to look at it. She watched the flowing river, and could almost feel the barrier of the accendo. "I've only seen this river a few times.. but.. you never forget the feeling." She looked at each of them, taking a deep breath.
Moroy kissed Sylvia's cheek lovingly as his hand slipped from her grasp and he closed his eyes. There were no guards around during wartime; anyone willing to enter was either stupid enough to die or confident enough to know the magnitude of their situation. Sylvia watched Moroy with fascination as he basked in the power of his native element. She could almost feel the power within him at this moment and hurt for him as she realized that it wouldn't be there on the other side.
Sylvia waded into the water with them, walking through Moroy's element. She looked at him with sorrowful eyes, her heart bursting for him. She ran her fingers along the surface, looking down at her reflection in the water. The river was so majestic and tranquil--a stark contrast to the ever-shifting landscape beyond.
She nodded and paused as the water formed on her ankles. She closed her eyes and slowly spread her arms, feeling the mass of accendo on this side of the river, forming the water into its solid form, creating a larger and larger boat-shaped craft on the shore. Even with all of this untapped power available, Sylvia had to focus--she wasn't a full-on frost adept, but soon enough the raft was complete--large enough to accomodate three travelers. Then she extended her arms and formed a snowy white oar to row.
Moroy smiled as he hoisted both lovely women into the boat. He left the oar aside as he closed his eyes and they began slowly drifting toward the shore. The water adept leaned forward and kissed Sylvia passionately as the boat rocked gently, "your abilities never cease to amaze me. I love you."
She smiled to him and laughed a little as he picked her up, sitting down and kissing him back lovingly. "Thanks, love.. I'm no frost adept though.. if I had to gauge my powers, I'm only about three quarters of any one of the two elements in Nomeni.. but in the Dead Zone.. I can't be too sure.." Sylvia's true talent, combining both elements flawlessly, was her trump card, as Moroy and Etna had witnessed a few times before.
Moroy smiled as he sat beside his lover, wrapping an arm around her as the boat slowly picked up speed. As they drifted away from the shore, Sylvia could feel the accendo leaving her. It was a horrifying feeling, as though the oxygen were slowly draining out of your lungs without you actually exhaling. A part of her was missing and had it not been for Moroy's gentle caress, the adjunct may have been considerable more frightened.
Sylvia shivered--the feeling had only come to her once before, and she was terrified. This time she was still terrified.. but at least she had Moroy. She embraced him tighter and bit her lip. She then looked to Etna, sitting alone, and reached over, taking her hand tightly. "We're doing it for science.. for love.. for a chance of happiness." She said slowly, trying to rally the small boat.
For all of them, they wished the boat ride would have lasted longer so that they could have clung onto their last few wisps of easily summoned accendo. By the time the boat was nearly ashore, they had lost a grasp on the familiar feeling of power at home.
The shore was quickly approaching as a fog rolled in; fitting for their uncertain future with nothing but a quixotic dream, strong friendships and undying love to keep them going. A new future awaited them and landing on the shore of the Dead Zone was just the beginning.
