He scoffed, "Love? It is the weakest of emotions and the one that is a conduit for all kinds of weakness. Anger, jealousy, lust, all weaknesses created by love. I do not love."
Trying to feign composure, he quickly asked another question before she could ask him to elaborate, "Would you have any remorse for taking a life?"
"I wouldn't be foolish enough to go into enemy territory unless the Immortalis were sure of victory, and even then the prisoner's punishments isn't my duty."
They had been walking for almost an hour now and Will still wasn't sure where they were going.
"Ah" said the student, she passed the first test he thought. After a moment, he broke the awkward silence by questioning her again, "Have you ever felt powerless before?"
"I have...a few times when I couldn't help my friends and especially when I couldn't help my parents." she said. "Your turn, what would you do if you were forced with a choice...side with the enemy and live or stay with your comrades and die."
"The only time I would side with an enemy is to stab them in the back" he replied with an unnerving coldness.
They had reached the edge of a lake, one that Will was unfamiliar with. It looked like its contents was black, but it could have been the night reflecting off the surface of the water.
"We've arrived"
"A student never jokes about an examination" he replied with a sense of foreboding.
To call the water below inhospitable was an understatement, but it was Will's only hope of passing the exam and becoming a mage worthy of serving the Nomeni.
At first it felt like a casual swim. She was about to ask Gohael how this was supposed to test her when she felt it. It was a scary sensation... the accendo that should have been pulsating through her had vanished. It was like her body had gone completely devoid of life, but she was still living.
It was dizzying to feel this lifeless and she could only faintly here Gohael taunting her, asking her a question he had quizzically asked her earlier, "Have you ever felt powerless?"
It was beginning to become difficult to keep her head above water and she quickly dipped below the surface. As she sank, she could see silver shapes moving in the water. She was not alone.
The shapes were moving quickly and were nearly indistinguishable. Will struggled to get to the surface to get some air and had one deep breath before she dropped below the surface again. For a flickering instant she felt some accendo surge into her but it was gone as quickly as it had come, before she could use it.
