The troops on the far side of the gate didn't move. They stood impassively. Perhaps a demonstration of their ability to follow orders. Even the commander stood stock still. A friendly breeze showed that she had a cloak on over the armor.
After two or three minutes the officers in charge of the recruits turned to them and spoke. Quietly, but with enough force and volume to be heard by all, "Get in a line, as straight as possible. Then march in step or you'll have latrine duty for a week. Right foot first."
Shaken and wide-eyed from the presence of Commander Fera, Bellamin quickly stepped into line behind the officers. If I have to wait any longer, I think I'll explode! he thought, but did not slacken in the slightest.
Jadyn, with a inward grin stepped into the line behind the Aqiual, remembering that his father had prepared him for this since he was a little boy, and he was used to following orders
Thellotar's mouth formed into a crisp smile at this. 'I could go along with this' he thought, 'but I wonder what they'll do if I take charge?' After all, he was not one to take orders from dolls dressed up in shiny metal.
"Hey dirtfaces! Get in line!" I wondered how that would go over with the guards.
Janon snorted at the tall, one-eyed recruit's commands. He didn't want to make it seem like he was following his orders, but he knew better than to avoid commands that had already been given by the real officers. I'll enjoy watching that guy's face getting ground into the dirt. Maybe I'll do it myself. Janon let the rest of his berries fall to the ground as he stepped into the line.
Liya stepped in line, obeying the officers was the best she could do this moment.
She threw back her hood, revealing her young face, then she reached inside her mantle, grabbing the small, silver necklace hanging around her neck, she held it tight.
Aruven sighs as she gets in line. She didn't like marching, needless stomping on the ground while marching in a row. It's still better then latrine duty though...

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
It seemed a wise idea to Krensae to join the others in the line, so he shifts his harp case in a more comfortable position and waits, ready to hear more.

The officers were not amused at Thellotar's behavior. Three of them made a move towards him at once, but two stopped when they realized the others had the situation in hand.
"So, you think you're an officer already?" the remaining seargeant snarled. "I got three words for you, private: learn your place. You wanna give orders? Try fighting in the comapny for a year or two, then maybe you can lead the latrine team."
"Now get the hell in line!"
I bear you no personal animosity, Darksys, I promise. This is just how the army works.
Hey, is there anyone else on the forums going to Rice University in Houston? We could ALWAYS use more people in our Magic games. PM me if you want to play sometime
Looking thoroughly pleased at himself, Thellotar eased into the line. "My apologies, sergeant." He undoubtedly didn't really meant it. After all, what's wrong with a little independence?
I know you didn't mean it; that's what I would have done in your place. I was asking for it, but I thought it would make for some interesting conflict beyond "I step in line." "I also step in line.", etc. Not to knock the rest of you. When are we going to get to the good stuff?
Let me make sure it's known that this project is not all action, all the time. A significant part of the project will involve what we have so far. That is, conversations and interaction between characters while there's nothing else going on.
When they're all in line (and Thellotar has been whapped upside the head), the sergeants walk them into the courtyard. The commander takes her helmet off and looks over them. There's a look on her face that could very well be annoyance. Possibly unhappiness at the new recruits. Or perhaps just something else. Then she speaks. She doesn't yell, doesn't speak loudly. But her voice projects across the courtyard.
"Recruits! Welcome to the company. Your training starts today. You will be given a bunk, and your personal items will be taken by the quartermaster for the time being while you are issued your new uniform. Your training will start in four hours. I look forwards to seeing you there. Dismissed."
Bellamin was resistant to the thought of losing his father's necklace, but he reassured himself by thinking it would be returned. He remained in place, as he was not ordered to do otherwise, and waited to be assigned a bunk.
Krensae approaches the quartermaster, "Ah, you don't gamble with new people's belongings, do you? It was dreadfully hard to make this harp and salvage this case to safekeep it." He slides the strap off his shoulder as he unties his necklace and puts it inside the case, which he hands to the man. "And is she always so...crisp?"

For a moment Liya looks into the eyes of the commander, then turn her head back and walks of, still holding the small necklace in her right hand.
She walks towards the quartermaster and silently gives him her flute and the necklace she had been holding, trusting that the quartermaster would keep those old and to her important items safe.
Then she silently waits, she doesn't feel like wanting to talk much right now.
Jadyn walks up to the quartermaster and hands over his necklace, along with the bundle he had been carrying. he walked over to Liya and offered his hand to her, as if for a handshake, Jadyn, how are you?
OOC: i know you said she dosen't feel like talking landil, but Jad dosen't, he's a people person
I know it won't be action all the time. I was just being proactive to make the story interesting.
Thellotar grumbles, beginning to think to himself: I suppose I could give them my eye pendant, but what good would that do? It'd make me useless! I think they would understand, but I won't bother telling them unless they ask for it." With a smooth indiscreet motion he sneezes, tucking his pendant under his robe.
Sammy unwillingly hands most of his materials to the man. he slowly puts down the dilapidated longbow and the aqiual made necklace. He then handed him his bag and continued walking next to Liya. Her mood seemed infectious and he only waved at Jadyn when heard him speak.
Sorry, Thellotar's a jerk and Janon's probably going to do something physical to his face. Sooner or later.
Janon mused on the tall recruit's "sneeze." Wonder if ol' cyclops is hiding something. Eh, it's nothing to do with me.
When it came his turn to face the quartermaster, Janon just shrugged. "I don't have much 'cept the clothes on my back." He pulls several lengths of twine from his pocket and offers it. "If you need to, take it. I can always get some more."
Liya grabs Jadyn’s hand and looks him in the eyes, she didn’t say anything, just looked …
Then suddenly the view changed, she wasn’t standing next to Jadyn and Sammy any more, she was standing in a room.
An early sun shined through the many windows, birds sang in the trees outside, she was home …
But in the middle of the room was a bed, a shaman was standing at its side, on it was … she gasped for air … her brother!
She tried to move and speak, but she couldn’t … she could only watch her brother die, it were his last moments.
Those days she had been sitting or standing there, always caring for her brother.
On those rare moments he had been fully conscious she would hold his hand and they would whisper hopeful words to each other.
One of those times he had given her that silver necklace, now it was the only thing physical that remembered her of him.
She could only stare to her brother, tears dripping from her eyes, while he was slowly dying.
Then, the picture faded and Liya was again standing next to Jadyn and Sammy, tears where still dripping from her face.
Jadyn … he had remembered her of her brother, not his physical form, no, her brother had looked much more like her …
But Jadyn’s kindness … the same as her brother, always cheerful, always there for her when she needed someone to care for her …
Aruven places hands her ocarina over with not second thoughts, but she thinks a moment before taking off her wristbands. They weren't very dear to her, but they prevented a lot of conversations which she'd rather not have. She thinks about it for a moment before handing them over anyway. It'd come up sooner or later.
