The castle is home to many recruits, and not all of them train on missions. Inside the outer wall of the castle is a large, rather trampled field where many of the newer recruits--and a fair few of the veterans--practice their skills. A lareg part of it is just flat, open ground, but at the fringes there are tracks and straw dummies and hurdles and all manner of devices to assist with muscular or martial conditioning. During the day, the training grounds of the castle are filled with action. Seargeants bawl commands at troops in raggedy formations. Single fighters slash and stab at each other with wooden swords, padded spears, you name it--any soldiers who wish to train at melee fighting come here. Off to the sides, other soldiers hone their bodies with running, jumping--basically any event one can associate with "track sports" that is somehow useful in the army.

Nevin was there, but he didn't see Sammy immediately. He was watching a bunch of recruits--though a closer look revealed that these recruits were executing some sort of maneuver. One group was attacking the other, and Nevin was directing the attackers while another officer, in chainmail, directed the others.
Nevin: "No, you idiots! Keep the pincer! KEEP THE PINCER--dammit! Short spears! Fill that hole!"
Chainmail dude: "Don't let them flank you! There--you broke the line, keep those pikemen separated so you can flank them!"

Tp Sammy's relief, it did.
The spearmen Nevin had been directing had been in a pincer formation, trying to surround and flank the defenders--but when their line had broken, the defnders quickly surrounded the broken-off part, and after that there were not enough of Nevin's men to surround the defenders. They quickly became disorganized and scattered, and Nevin threw up his hands in defeat.
Sammy also noticed that men who would have been killed in a normal battle simply dropped to the ground. Once Nevin declared defeat, they simply got up, brushing chalk off their clothes.
Chalk?
But before Sammy could grasp the implications of that, Nevin had turned to him. "Hey, Sammy. What did you need?"

Nevin looked at Sammy and began chewing absently on his lip as he thought. "Well, most of the mages I know aren't really so calm, and the ones who are use water, not wind."
"What you should probably do is go find the mage bunker and ask around. If you need calm, then I know you don't want to train there...but the officers there know more people who could teach you."

Suven notices Nevin, now talking to one of his fellow officers. He also sees several other random officers--some directing formations, some overseeing single combats--and several recruits following those directions.

"Just a smidgen," Suven grins, "I'd love to work on using my weapons more effectively, but my leg still hurts a little and I probably should not strain it. Is there any trainer here with, odd teaching styles that would keep me from hurting this leg?"

I'll bet you wish you had a non-unglued/unhinged card that shared your first name.
After a long moment, Nevin shakes his head slightly, as if coming out of a daze.
"It'd probably work best if you worked on some other type of training for a while--maybe take a little time listening to lectures about how to fight, or something. I don't know of anyone offhand who trains like that, but--"
The officer Nevin had been talking to stopped him. "Go to the combat lessons room in the castle--not the martial arts one, but the classroom-type one, and sit in a desk for a few days. You'll be much better off if you do that than if you try to fight and bruise your bone."
Again, apologies for the long delay. I'll make that classroom thread shortly, and I promise not to keep you there long--unless you find it interesting
