For all fans of John Avon, he and his agent Guy Coulson are working on finalizing their Kickstarter project in the final three days of it's run. This project is to fund a book featuring 30 years of John's art titled Journeys to Somewhere Else. Not only is the book available (in hardback and deluxe hardback editions), but there are also opportunities to get signed lithographs of both the Unhinged lands and the Zendikar lands, special giclée prints exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, original sketches and signed cards, as well as a bundle of signed artist proofs (cards with a white back and the card face on the front) among many other possible rewards and add-ons.
At the time of this topic, they have made it to £67,052 with 3 days left to go and they have stretch goals through £100,000 (this is in British Pounds Sterling, which for those of you who don't know, currently resides at $1.71 for each £1).
I'm not affiliated with John or Guy, but as a backer, the more people who contribute, the more free things everyone who buys at least the book get.
The hardback version of the book has 204 pages (started at 180) and three fold out murals, or gatefolds, in it. The deluxe hardback version has 252 pages (started at 228 because it has special sections about how John produces his art) along with the three gatefolds.
Anyone who pledges at least at the hardback book level gets a free signed print of an MTG Forest art that has yet to be released (but will be out by March 2015 when the book's target deadline is). If the funding makes it to £85,000 then everyone who buys the book through Kickstarter gets a signed print of the art of Clifftop Retreat. Additionally, if you get anything from Peter Mohrbacher's Kickstarter campaign plus a book from John Avon's campaign, then you get free prints of John's Zendikar Island and Peter's Swan Song.
As someone who has already contributed for a deluxe hardback (which comes signed...) and also pledged more for another giclée of a non-MTG art and a playmat of the book cover, I'd love to at least make it to the Clifftop Retreat art stretch goal. Also, for anyone who loves John's art and did not yet know about this, you now have an opportunity to pick up a copy of a book featuring tons of John's art.
I don't know if this was the right place to put this sort of post, but the topic about it in the artist section had a small number of views and seems to have been buried and lost to time. I figured a higher profile post about it in the News section would get more attention. Also, since there is already a topic about Rebecca Guay's Kickstarter in the News section, I figured it was perfectly okay to post this here. Plus after putting this on Twitter, Facebook, and my own site, MTG Salvation was the only place I had yet to see an article about this and had a large enough community that people would actually see this.

Just want to add that we're almost at the 70,000 stretch goal with only 56 hours to go! Just a few more backers and John will add an additional 12 pages to the book.

I kickstarted near the beginning for the regular edition (and once added, and extra 15 pounds for the playmat, which looks stunning with the near-borderless redesign they did after taking feedback from everyone)
Also John just updated earlier with an "unofficial" 75,000 stretch goal that ALL versions of the book now will come signed!!!
I really wanted the deluxe version, but didn't have the extra $100 to do it. But I'm so looking forward to it.
As of this post, we just crossed over the 80k GBP mark, so another 5k GBP and we all get a signed Clifftop Retreat print as another great bonus to everything else on top.
If you're a fan of his art, you REALLY NEED to kickstart this book
Four hours left, already over the £85,000 mark, so free Clifftop Retreat print. And also an unreleased Forest print.
After everything, I'll have a deluxe book, a playmat, the Palace of Caera (non-MTG) print, the Clifftop Retreat, Forest, and the Zendikar Island. Definitely happy about this, and anyone who wants to get any of these limited edition rewards and add-ons, there is very little time left to contribute and get what you want.
I'm actually debating on getting an add-on of a dedication (for my girlfriend since she's splitting the cost with me) or perhaps getting a hardback book in addition to the deluxe copy...

Well, I missed out on the John Avon Kickstarter, but did click on the link and pledge to Peter's.
Is there something we can do to promote the artists more? One of my biggest attractions to Magic is the art, and to be able to have something tangible other than the cards is very exciting.

Every Sunday, my website features an "Artist of the Week." I do a little research on them, find their social media pages, websites, and feature several card arts and at the end, if the Mothership has one, I include links to wallpaper downloads. It's not an amazing weekly article, but I try to feature cards people recognize like mythics, planeswalkers, recent lands, etc. while including details like what card first featured their art and when.
Two weeks ago, John was the featured artist. I was saving him until I could mail off some cards for him to sign, but I figured promoting the Kickstarter was more important. Of course, I already featured some artists like Peter Mohrbacher before his Kickstarter began, so I didn't have the opportunity to include that for his article. Trying not to repeat anyone just yet. That's why Twitter and Facebook exist. I tried to do a lot of PR about them to the few people who follow my website on Twitter.
The only way to find out about these things is by word of mouth, which means knowing the right people. I wish I had posted here sooner, but being relatively new, I was a little afraid of posting since lurking suits me better.
Also, even if you missed the Kickstarter, you can still at least pick up the book (albeit for a slightly higher price) from John's website: http://johnavonart.com/kickstarter.html Hope that helps. (You might be able to contact Guy and see if you could get some of the add-ons and such if you pre-ordered it now. Doesn't hurt to ask.)
