Registration for GP Vegas will close Friday. Saturday morning registration will not be available. This is so we can fire the biggest Magic event of all time on time.
If you want to get in, please pre-register. I already know I'm going to have a bunch of disappointed players who come Saturday trying to sign up, but we're doing our best to mitigate this by getting the word out in places like this.
Knowing that plenty of people have spent tons of time and money to get somewhere for a tournament and conceding that they are going to be very upset because of poor planning is pretty terrible.

I'm starting to think we might see a new all time high tournament registration record, or at least for limited.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I'm starting to think we might see a new all time high tournament registration record, or at least for limited.
They had 3050 pre-registered as of Tuesday. This will probably be the largest MTG tournament of all time -- past and future. I wasn't planning on going, but now I am just because of the spectacle. There're still a couple of double rooms in downtown vegas at the Golden Nugget and the Golden Gate for less than $150 a night.
Knowing that plenty of people have spent tons of time and money to get somewhere for a tournament and conceding that they are going to be very upset because of poor planning is pretty terrible.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they'll take the 50-100 people who show up and can't get in over the 'don't do seating until at least noon, tourney doesn't start til 1:30pm' gambit and pissing off actual everyone who signed up.
The terrible idea here is people who are too lazy to pre-register. People expecting that the logistics of such an event can handle them slacking up on saturday 12:30, en masse.
Its bound to happen, but everyone who gets hit by it probably either lives under a rock or needs a lesson in keeping up with the news. If you spend so much money on your weekend, there is no excuse for being uninformed.
So, did they advertise previously that registration would be open on saturday? If they did, how is it slacking for someone to assume they can reg then?
Also, my point still holds that when you are prepared to spend so much money on a weekend event, why would you not take the effort to pre-register, or at least be informed so that you know about stuff like this?
Because, if the event is advertised as having certain times, theres no reason for me to suspect that it would not have those times?
I mean, really, they shouldn't be surprised by how many people are coming to this. They limited the distribution of the set FAR too much to expect anything else. As a consumer I would expect that they had taken that into account when setting registration times. It's not uninformed for me to not consider that they would take the unprecedented step of changing it.
All in all, I can't help but imagine this is going to lead to a rather large black eye on what would otherwise be quite the good event.

Are you kidding? When they announced the schedule, the tournament organizers knew then that this tournament was a big deal. Its one of the reasons they put it in Vegas in the first place. To not have the foresight to make this announcement sooner is the terrible idea. If anyone shows up on Saturday morning to register according to information given out months ago and isn't allowed to register, they should be upset.
I hope this announcement is just there to make everyone pre-register who sees it, and then go back on their word and open up Saturday registration. I have no problem with people cutting off registration at exactly the time they said they would, but this announcement will likely affect several hundred people who spent close to or north of 1000 dollars to attend, and is probably the highlight of their year.
I find it disheartening to know that this decision was made with that information in hand.

So people have been discussing for months that this GP's attendance would be insane, and Wizards waits until 3 days before the tournament to announce this?!
And how much time do they think it will take to tell hundreds, if not thousands, of people that they can't participate in a tournament that they flew in for?

So frustrated right now!
yea, I can't see how they can possibly think it will be faster to deal with hundreds of people pissed off that htey wasted several hundred dollars to come to the tournament than it would to jsut register them.
Really what thye needed to do (and didn't) was have an earlier cutoff for saturday registration. Say "Tournament starts at noon, registration line gets cut off at 10:00. If you aren't in it, too bad".
I get into Vegas an hour before the registration ends. I was really upset when this news broke, but I was also unaware of pre-registration. With that knowledge now, I am not worried.
What they should do is make this standard and move up start times for limited GPs at least. Not any good reasons to wait until day of anymore. I'd rather have a smoothly run GP of 4000 that starts earlier -than one that starts at noon and gets 4200. If you can buy a plane ticket and reserve a hotel room , you can preregister.
Also registration should include the media release form as part of it.
For locals that can't make it Friday but can Saturday and don't have internet / credit card - well get a friend to sign you up or maybe they could have some local shops help out i.e you pay them the cash they sign you in as paid and they pay the TO.

I think there will be some people that will be upset, and that's unavoidable, but I think for the most part people that make plans to go to a GP read up on the GP they are going to. They need to get the address and all of that information to know where to go, what time the event is and what side events they will have. It shouldn't be hard to make it clear to those guys that there is no saturday registration.
There will be locals that show up and try to register saturday that will be disappointed... but I think with such a big event, you have to risk pissing those guys off. I'd rather the tournament start squarely at 9 (or whenever it starts) and not have to worry about needing extra tables for people that register on Saturday.
I just was at GP Houston, and the tournament started a good hour and a half afterwards because they were still getting things ready by 9AM.

It could still take an hour or more to go through that line. Not to mention pushing back setup time since they may need to add tables if necessary or add those people into the thing.
I mean seriously as stated if you intend on going to this event either show up ANYTIME Friday and register or register online. It's not that unreasonable, I mean you don't see golfers at pro tours letting them know they will be there on the day it starts.
MTG (In addition to other TCG's) and Poker are probably the only major games that allow people to register the day of the event. Already this will be a ridiculous event to try to get going in time as with 4000+ people logistics get a lot more difficult. Adding the additional difficulty of allowing people to get in line on Saturday to register is ridiculous. I want this event to start on time not 2+ hours later.
What kind of moron throws down lets say 400-700 bucks to go to Vegas for an event but doesn't bother to preregister? I mean seriously if the only reason the guy is going to Vegas to play in the event then why would you not bother preregistering. I mean you get punished harshly for booking a flight a week or less before you are about to go this is the same thought process. It also seems that tons are fairly smart here as pre-registration for the event is over 3600 now. So quite a few are not being complete imbeciles which is handy :).
This is also posted on Cascade Games website, I know the organizer of this event personally and he is one of the nicest guys around. He does everything in his power to make these events as well run as possible that is why he basically runs every major event on the west coast for WotC. He will probably feel bad turning people away on Saturday I'm sure.
I think this simply comes down to a balance of pissing of maybe a hundred players (all local, because you just wouldn't travel to Vegas without intricate planning), vs pissing off 4000 players that have already paid money all collectively suffer if the tournament takes longer or just doesn't have enough room/tables to run the tournament.
There is something to knowing exactly how many people are going to be playing in a tournament the day of the tournament. You don't have to estimate or wonder if you have enough room for everyone to play. And most importantly you don't have the thousands of people that could've pre-registered that figured they would just show up the day of and pay instead.

This isn't a pro tour. This is an open event. An open event that advertised a particular registration time.
I would have no qualms whatsoever with the curent registration system. If it was what they had initially advertised it as. Or, hell, even if they had changed it within a reasonable time frame. THe issue is that this is a last minute change.
It's not a big issue. I'm not going, I don't really care that much, but it will obviously be a black eye on an otherwise great event. A black eye that could *very* easily been avoided by being professional.

Which is all fine and dandy, but a professional event manager would have recognized this and not advertised for months ahead of time that people could register on Saturday.
Like I said, the issue isn't that they aren't allowing people to register on Saturday, the issue is that they are changing the registration rules at the last minute.

I don't know, I certainly would pre-register. But you and I both konw that there will be lots of people who don't. Mostly because they were told they didn't have to *by the people running the event*.

Liek I mentioned above, this is fine and all - and probably true. But, this is not a new event organizer. Any idiot with half a brain could have seen that this was going to be the biggest event in magic history. There is no reason to be "blindsided" by the number of registrants and change the registration rules at the last minute.
LOL...cracks me up about people getting pissed they aren't able to sign up on Saturday for the GP......just classic magic players 'what I can't show up the last minute?'.....and somehow this is the responsibility of the organizer....oh wait, yeah its just a slightly larger FNM........
