I'm not even going to try to put into words how excited I am for the return to Ravnica! I left Magic for a while as a kid and one day, while looking for a gift for my nephew, I came across a pack from Ravnica. I was hooked right from the start and have been playing since.
I can't wait to return to the place where it all began...
Even though i started playing magic during Lorwyn, i was always under the impression that Yawgamoth was powerfull/ strong enough that he could have learned how to artificially planeswalk. Not to mention there is always Memnarch and his soul trap things which did bring beings from other planes to Mirrodin. So i would say that it is very possible for Niv-Mizzet to have learned how to planeswalk without being a planeswalker.
Niv-Mizzet never left Ravnica. He just GTFO'd away from the nephilim to some unknown part of the plane.
Yawgmoth used planar portals to go from one plane to another. He could only go to Phyrexia, Rath, and Dominaria, using portals he had found when he was young.
"Learning how to planeswalk" is something that you only see in really old Magic fiction, before they had a cohesive Creative department. It's completely possible that Niv-Mizzet was a latent Planeswalker the last time we saw him, but nothing hinted at it so I'm not holding my breath for a Niv PW card.
The location he went to was never confirmed. Whether it be on or off Ravnica
Very excited about this.
Was it ever hinted that he left the plane? I'm just curious, since it's been a while since I read the Ravnica novels.
As I remember it, he just kinda flew away and wasn't mentioned again. Just want to make sure I'm not forgetting anything big.
I concur with another poster: bad timing to release this news. While I loved Ravnica and I am sure I will love RtR, they announce it right when they are in the process of spoiling AVR? Way to cannibalize business. On a more personal note, this will be like waiting for Santa to come; for a whole frickin' 6 months! Arghhhh!

Well that's the thing, they never hinted to anywhere specific. All we know was he got bored of fighting (or rather, to pompous and believed ineffable to ever admit injury), disappeared and his Mage Lords could no longer hear him.
Now we seem him with Jace. I don't know much about Jace story canon, but I'd wager a guess he and Niv-Mizzet met off plane.
I was always surprised Vol never made contact with Niv. Then again, Vol is of savage stock where Jace is of intellect.

Jace has been based in Ravnica for quite some time now, at least since before the Conflux, as the head of the Infinite Consortium. With Niv-Mizzet being one of the Paruns, I'd think it's more likely that they met each other on Ravnica.

The last time we saw Sarkhan, he was chasing Liliana around on Bolas' behalf. Considering the history between Jace, Bolas, and Liliana, not to mention the fact that Sarkhan got a personal beating from Jace on Zendikar, I wouldn't be too surprised if Sarkhan showed up on Ravnica at some point.
Words cannot even begin to describe how excited I am that the return will be so soon. Okay, I guess not SOON, but I sure hadn't expected it being later this year. All I need to make me happy is a new art Niv-Mizzet or something similar. Everything else is just gravy.
I saw Temporal Mastery. Then I saw Niv-Mizzet. U/R, already with Delver, is going to be Tier 0. Not that I'm unhappy about that...
Hope they don't totally retcon this like they did to Mirrodin. Or make Niv anything less than the near-omniscient infinite-comboing Izzet parun he was last we saw. If those happen, Imma shoot a creative team.

Certainly am going to be looking forward to this, I only jumped in as Alara was coming out so this'll be my first taste of Ravnica. Though I will be a little mad if they reprint the original shock lands since I just shelled out $18 for a Blood Crypt.
I just hope they make a Niv-Mizzet 2.0 instead of a complete reprint. That would make me pretty mad. I would like to see some 3-color combinations along with the original theme. It would make sense for some Guilds to have combined after last time, in order to survive.
I am disappointed that I pre-ordered a box of Avacyn Restored instead of saving my money for this EPICNESS.
I agree with this. I'm hoping for some focus on wedge colored creatures/legends for EDH purposes.
My friends and I have speculated about this for months, and now that it's happening, I'm both excited, and worried. A Return to Ravnica will be awesome, unless they go for power and skimp on the flavor. Don't get me wrong, Ravnica had some great cards and awesome mechanics, but what I love about it was the flavor. Each guild was like its own little pack, and everyone had their own preference. With the SoM block, everyone I knew picked a side, Mirran or Phyrexian, which made casual AND competitive play more interesting. With guilds, making a two-team match into a ten-way free-for-all, this could get very interesting. Let's just cross our fingers and hope for the best, which, with what we've seen recently, is sure to come.
Ravnica is by far my most favorite block. The mechanics were pretty cool, but the flavor is the best around. I started screaming (like a little girl) when I saw the announcement. Cannot wait.
The reason most people were able to guess a return to ravnica was the pw ralzarek. Hopefully hell be in. I am curious how theyll try to live up to the hype of ravnica
Wizards, keep your mono-colored Core-set plainswalker Jace out of the multi-colored flavorful Ravnica. Don't cross the streams! Ravnica is enough of a hook to draw in players, it doesn't need the Core-set plainswalkers in there too.
If Jace is mind controlling Niv-Mizzet, I'll write this off as a blatant money grab. Wizards, Ravnica is a valuable asset. Do it justice, again. (and reprint the Shocklands while you're at it).

Bringing the shock lands back would be really great, but no announcement yet about this. I hope they do though
