For people who play the game rather than just collect for value Ravnica was a huge success (even if Nivmizzet and Dual lands were the only money cards.) For Wizards Ravnica was a great monetary success. Return to Ravnica will be a great success in both ways again. Probably even better with the new Planeswalkers.
There was also Dark Confidant and Life From the Loam. They fixed the one problem old Rav had and that is give all the Guilds equal treatment by splitting all 10 in the first two sets. I think based on just the third of the set I've seen, this is going to be a fantastic set.
What do you mean they are several years overdue? Magic prints things like the Gates all the time, they just don't have the land type "Gate."
And as far as I know until Return to Ravnica gates haven't at all mattered.
I don't know of any previous enemy color lands with the "enters the battlefield tapped" drawback that the ally color lands have - Coastal Tower and friends.
When Ravnica was in Standard, there were hundreds of different decks, each of them playable, and something new was always creeping up. There has never been a more healthy standard environment, to my knowledge
I wasnt around when Ravnica came out, but i really hope that your statement may become true. I hate the current environment with about 3-4 Topdecks everybody is playing (Hi Delver!) and brewing is a very hard thing.

This is the exact reason that I haven't played standard in a year and a half. I'm guessing we'll see a really diverse standard once gatecrash comes out.

Not really, that's a fairly recent thing. There's a reason the Alara "shardlands" were so revolutionary for some. That was the cycle which set the standard we now have. With the whole Gate subtheme and interactions, them having a subtype while being common is icing on the cake.
It's been a while since I was this excited for a whole block matching reality with my expectations... practically 7 years to be precise...
The fact that they are printing a gate subtype and the following set's codename is gatecrash has me really excited. A fetchland for gates would be really cool (although not likely).
