My idea is to bring one large deck box with you, you know, the kind that has space for 2 deck boxes, and bring some good trades in the other box in some kind of sleeve. It would at least make it difficult for someone to steal from you that way, if it's on the table next to you the whole time.
When I go to GP Portland, I'm thinking about bringing a spare deck box that's just filled with a bunch of junk commons, place it on some random table, and see if that can't fool a thief
And lol @ this thread almost going on for a year now.

This is brilliant. You should covertly follow whoever falls for it as they open the box, scream PIRANHA! then snap their picture. Make T-shirts of it.

If your going to jump out and do an ah ha moment make sure they're really stealing it. I've picked up expensive decks before only to turn them in and I got a deck that I left lying around once because someone turned it in.
Good people do exist and everyone should have a benifit of the doubt.
Theft is a continual problem at organized tourneys and in game stores in testing time and anywhere else that you are in public with cards. I had a friend lose a binder with power in it in 1994 at a medium sized tourney in NYC and from that moment onwards I have never taken more than the cards I am playing with to any tourney I play in.
All you need to play the game is 75 cards, a few extra sleeves in case some of them break, enough counters to do whatever counter tricks your deck does and a way of recording your life total in a manner clearly understandable by both players.
Anybody who shows up to a tournament event with more than that is going to spend time worrying about their cards that would be better spent worrying about their play. Those people are also going to become theft victims much more often than somebody who just has to worry about their deck box.
What sucks about this is that the theft at this point isn't even limited to DCI events. That's right: casual, being over at friend's houses, has its problems too. My friend recently had 4 Arcane Sanctum and 2-4 Lightning Bolt stolen from his house. His own house. What's worse is, it was when a bunch of us were over, just playing casual magic, video games, etc. Just trying to have a good time. And someone has to go and pull this. I swear, if I found out who did this, I'd go to school and defame them as a thief. What's even worse than that is, I have an idea of who did it. He's this kid who always tries to rip us off in trades, we point out values on magiccards.info and other places, and he tries to play it off with something along the lines of, "Well, on starcitygames..." or "Well, it has sentimental value..." The reason I think it's him is, not only does he rip us off, he's also the one who's been building up a burn deck as well as roflthopters. This is just bad, and I can't believe he'd to this to a guy he's known for so long now.
Damn, that sucks. If someone did this to me, I wouldn't be below setting a trap to find out for sure who did it and then kick the guy out of my house for good.
We were thinking about putting cards in the open in his basement, cards he cares about, but also ones that the guy said he needed for his burn and roflthopters. We were contemplating setting up a hidden camera, and if they were taken, quickly view the tape in private to see who took them. We'd then confront the person, get the cards back, and tell then to pack up and leave. We were thinking about having a bunch of people over this weekend at his house so we could maybe do this. If we do, I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Serious question : why is he your friend? If all he does is try to take advantage of you during trades and act like a jackass, can't you just say goodbye ?

My mother always taught me personally to never burn your bridges, even if the other person is a dick and at fault. You'd hate to require they're help later on in life and the last thing they remember about you was how you dissmesed them harshly.
lol I don't see much of a differnece in a lifetime ban and being banned until 2055.
I guess its for (can't think of the word) purposes.
Lol and the chance magic is still around until then? /We will have real yugioh cards like in the show thing we dont need magic.\ Sarcasm

One giant trade I did once involved about sixty to eighty rares and took up a large section of the table. At one point in the trading, I told the guy that I wanted to hold my intuitions, and he nodded and set them aside. After about twenty more minutes of bartering, he had managed to obscure them under piles of cards I'd agreed to trade. After we both agreed the trade looked fair, he just scooped them all up and walked off.
Lesson learned: If a card isn't in the trade, put it back in the binder ASAP.
Other than at that store nope. The DCI doesn't really care what happens at a small Tournament Organiser as long as they are following the requirments and guidelines. An individual TO is allowed to have their own additions to the eligibility for their tournaments as long as an idividual on the official DCI suspended list is not playing the DCI is going to be happy.

This "store" I used to go to; the owner would hold some of the prize support for herself. I heard she got banned so that's why I asked. Worst shop ever.

I'm with you, I've been trying to find a news article on this but have come up dry.
Anyone have links that work? The links in the original post don't go to an article anymore.
Thanks.
