Finally, it's been released. I found out about PT Honolulu at Nationals, but as I'm under an NDA, I couldn't say anything until it was officially released. I'm psyched for PT HI
As someone who really can't afford to play competitive Constructed, I've been chased out of ever playing Pro Tour events. All because Wizards wants centerfold poster-boys.

im sure if you qualified for a pro tour getting a deck would be the last of your worries...
Thats like saying that because im horrible at drafting I have no shot at getting onto the tour...dumb, really.
As far as the changes go, Im kind of excited, I dont think this is a bad change at all, infact almost makes PTs more interesting than they already are. Multi-Formatted PTs is a pretty good Idea, Reminds me of the VS. CCG.

Do you honestly think you could compete at that level of limited without spending vastly more money on packs to practice?
(And if you're good enough to "go infinite" on prize winnings, I'm not sure why you would have money problems....)
1. I don't want to go back to Hawaii. Regardless of your level of sponsorship that state is EXPENSIVE to visit. By far the MOST expensive state I've been to in the last 5 years. And Honolulu in June? This is going to be messy...
2. Why are there 2 North American PT's? I can answer my own question (cause it's cheap, see #1) but I shouldn't have to. I don't want to see all the places I've already been to for Magic, I want to See the World.
3. Judging a combined event is terrible - all the logistical nightmares of both events with none of the benefits of getting through Day 1 of either. Woo hoo!

This change is awful IMO. I love constructed pro tours that showcase what can be thought up by pro's However, Now you take the constructed masters hard work and even though he may have the best deck for the format he has to worry about Joe Sixpack openening something broken and knocking him out of contention. Overall, It will be an idea casual players will like because they will never have to deal with it and the pro's will end up disliking. Stupid Wizards just can't get anything right of late.
ASIDE: The team format for worlds is insane. I have spoke to many players since the format was released and it is 100% that were this a ptq format we would go to every one within 6 hours probably. The most fun ever had playing magic was turn team PTQ's and GP's and the hope that this may one day come back in a new innovative format excites me. Granted, Wizards will probably never do it because it would be to enjoyable.
More like a true master sweeps away the limited portion, then gets knocked out due to bad match-ups in constructed. "Joe Sixpack" is almost always worse at limited.
(Yes, I signed up for an account just to respond to this :).)
I have always hated the idea of a constructed specialist or a limited specialist. This way, people will truly see which player is the best magic player. And opening some bomb doesnt mean anything if you dont know how to draft around it
I'm kind of happy they did this. I like the idea of split pts, but they shouldn't all be split, or it defeats the point of nats/worlds. While worlds will always have the innovative formats (like the amazing new team trios format), it's not half as interesting when all the pts are also mixed. I think 1 constructed, 1 limited and 1 split would be great. But anyway you sclice it, it's still fine. And it deserves a yay just because it confirms that the pt will exist next year. Oh, and standard qualifiers ftw!

That's a very ignorant thing to say. You can't hate someone for excelling in one thing just because they aren't the best at everything.
The only thing I am not happy about here is the date of the extended PT. As it basically negates the time between this and the next rotation. I much rather would of wanted an earlier Extended Season so we can see the effects of the Onslaught onward extended. Now we have to wait until Onslaught rotates out of extended to see another PT. On the plus side it will be 2 weeks after the rotation so most of us should be on even ground going into the PT.
I personally love the idea of split pro tours. I'm one of those constructed players on a very tight budget, I got a new job only recently and I play both limited and constructed because they have a very symbiotic relationship. You pay $15 to get into a limited event, come out with more than $15 worth of cards you can (or can't) use in constructed. In my opinion, people should play both, but some people just aren't good at limited or don't have the budget to play in constructed so I think multiple types of pro tours will cater to all crowds.

I would put a Chuck Norris joke here, but I have a headache.
Sig and Avvy by me. You lost.
I don't know why everyone is excited. All this means is that there is now a much smaller population of Magic players, predominantly already on the Pro Tour, who are realistically capable of winning a PT.
In the past, you could specialize in just one format and try to go for the big upset, especially in Limited.
Now, there are only all-around players at the highest level. The time commitment to stay sharp in at least 2 formats is significant.
Again, I don't understand the excitement. The vast majority of amateur players who had a slim chance of ever winning a Pro Tour just had that chance reduced to zero. This is a marketing move to try to develop the Tiger Woods or Roger Federer of Magic. The dominant winner that transcends the game and builds excitement. Of course, trying to develop that all star (with the sole purpose of selling more product) comes at the expense of the fringe PT player.
THE PRO TOUR!!! Just so we got this clear, u are a Professional Magic Player once you get there, not a oh look u can sac some money and a trip to somewhere in the world Tour

I'm really disliking the idea of "Let's go back to Hawaii" instead of "Let's try somewhere which has never had a PT before". Sydney, or nearby, perhaps?

Sheesh.
Hawaii is like the best place to have a pro tour scenery wise lol.
If i remember correctly they asked pros which area in the world they loved the most traveling for the pro tour, japan (or somewhere in asia i dont remember correctly) and Hawaii were the 2 most popular answers.
It really would be nice to see some variety though. Honolulu is nice and all, but two years is a bit too soon.
And if they actually were going to split formats, it would make more sense to split them within the individual types themselves. It would be nice to see Day 1 Standard, Day 2 Extended or Day 1 Draft, Day 2 Sealed with another T8 draft, etc.

It's cheaper to hold a PT in the US with the weak economy and the weak dollar. It'll cost a lot more to send send their staff and all the set up to Europe.
Besides, Worlds is considered a PT, and that's in Rome this year.
Worlds being the reason I said 2 out of 4. Still, when I get on tour I don't want to go to USA most of the time.

You clearly don't understand a thing the person you quoted said. He displayed well thought out comments that were full of truth and you just replied with a post that doesn't mean anything relevant..

I thought onslaught didn't rotate until Fall 2009, while the extended PT is in June. So we will have extended with Onslaught.
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
I also LOVE the idea that they FINALLY realized that Standard was a useless format because it was played in TWO events per year (Nats and Worlds) and did something to make it more popular.
That should bring a lot more people to the PTQs since not everyone is willing to shed lots of money for a deck that's good only during the block PTQs season.
Well, I think its most popular because of Regionals, but I agree that its an underused format, and I'm glad they're correcting it.

Um... maybe you haven't played enough, but limited is incredibly skill intensive. If you haven't played a lot of limited, it's going to seem pretty random at first, but it takes knowledge, skill, and a ton of practice to really get the hang of the entire set, and win games without 4-ofs of the best card in the block. See the stats from the US Nationals Post-mortem for some additional commentary on this.

I have to agree, in that I prefer a well-rounded player vs. a specialist.

Regardless i guess it doesn't really matter, but limited geniuses such as Mike Hron or Kenji wont have as much time to shine as they once did.

Certainly not. Hawaii, or at least Honolulu, is VASTLY overrated. Australia is much better in my opinion. Plus, kangaroos. Nuff said?
I'd like to see Pro Tour: Anchorage, though, just to put some perspective on things.
