The problem with these storylines are that they would mess up new players. How would wizards explain to a new player who is just starting that their favorite character from the movie isn't available because its in an older format? I can't imagine that WOTC would want to make a movie that only speaks to avid Magic players. I have no doubts that they would try to recruit new players to the game. I know that I would be pissed if I really liked "X Character" and I couldn't even use him in my deck.
This brings me back to my original suggestion of making each planeswalker be generic. This would make the book Arena the obvious choice. It has all generic people with a generic storyline. It just happens to be about Magic. This would appeal to both Magic players and non-Magic players alike.

I could be wrong, but as I recall (I read this book twelve years ago), there was only one planeswalker in Arena until Garth One-Eye "ascended," which didn't happen via the spark because that hadn't been invented yet. I think Arena would make a great movie (if done right). On the other hand...
I'm almost through Planar Chaos and I think they could make a movie out of the block. Wouldn't it be awesome to see Tarmogoyf on the big screen? How the hell does a rigger assemble a contraption, anyway?
All in all, I think they will use a different story line. Hoepefully one they can release a related block with. I think it's possible to do this by developing the sets in advance (while developing other blocks simultaneously) and waiting for the right time to release them.
I still have my copy of the Magic movie poster. It's awesome.

well... correct me if im wrong, but the caracters in the movie will be able to be played... the caracter will be you, its just the spells that caracter uses that u need to get. And im sure they will do the spells in a way that you (as magic player) will see what it is, like "suddenly the sky turns black with dark clouds and a big lightning bolt hits the grizzly bear that was ready to attack the planeswalker"... here you will see that there are 2 spells; grizzly bears and a lightning bolt, but to someone that doesnt know this its just a monster attacking the planeswalker that is hit by a magical lightingbolt from the sky...
+ im sure they will use most spells that are able in coresets; like incinerate and such and maybe from the block that will be released after the movie hits theaters...
but well... lets just wait and see and be optimistic about it.
I hope its brothers war it would be really cool to see the world of antiquities put into a movie.
In fact it would be unique, fantasy with more of a grungy used look, like the original star wars did for sci fi.
There wouldnt be a blinding montage of CGI dragons and squidmonsters.
As far as actors, the actress who was M would be perfect for Tocasha.
Matt Damon and Mark Wahlburg for Urza and Mishra.
Also the story is pretty self containing no need for explainations of who Karn, Gerrard and Teferi are.
A small set of character personalities so they could be developed properly.

Don't you see that the whole aim of Moderators is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make infractions literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.
OK, so the two most popular ideas here seem to bet The Thran and The Brothers' War. The biggest detractors to these argue that any MTG movie made would need to tie into cards being released around the time of the movie... Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are very few cards from The Thran era. And the Brothers' War... Urza and Mishra as legends? An Urza planeswalker card??? The potential for tie in expansions to these two movies is HUGE in my opinion. Seriously, a well done Brothers' War movie with a cool set released to go with it would be a GIANT step in the right direction for Magic...
I think it would be great if they had the plot of the movie follow Teferi or someone like him in his journey from apprentice to gifted mage to planeswalker. That way you could introduce the color pie, the way the magic in Magic works, and the concept of the Planeswalker in a fairly tidy package. I think if the movie was done right it would actually bring more players to the table because it would make the game easier to understand for newbs.
I think a MTG movie would work well with the Arena storyline as the base to work from. This is mainly because of the five houses representing certain aspects of the mana. Over all I find the idea a slippery one as it will most likely flop unless they work out a great script and plot.
"And you must be... the Monopoly Guy. Thanks for the free parklng."
Give yourself a cookie if you know the film.
Frankly a MTG movie if made would necessitate some form of tie-in just like Marvel does with all their films. I think the best way to do this is make a Movie from one of the older stories AND release a Best of "Reprint" set or something to that affect. Capitalize on new blood playing creatures they saw and then hit them with the next "story"/set.
A mtg movie would be tight if it was handled well, I don't think they could do one on a whole Block there is way to much content in any block to fit in a movie. I would like to see one just about a specific time maybe involving: Baron Sengir,Lim Dul, Jaya, or Leshrac.
Edit: The movie will probably be jank and end up being funnier then the mtg commercials.
I hate to repeat this if its already been said, but doesn't anyone think they could make the storyline for a future block with making a movie in mind.
and gypsieking3280, the movie is Ace Ventura pet detective right? If its got Jim Carey its gotta be good.

Hopefully i will have a swelling of pride sometime soon..........
If you dont get that, look at my username, and if you still dont get it, than your to young to have an account on here without your parents permission, YOU ARE A BAD LITTLE CHILD!!!!
Maybe they should have the "Spinal Tap" gang do a spoof documentary on the MTG tourney scene. Have it setup similar to "Best in Show" or something to that effect. Just my two cents.
I would say that they could probably do a whole series of movies, starting from the brother's war, to the fight with gix, the planeswalker journey to Phyrexia, and to the final destruction of Yawgmoth.
god... any magic movie will just SUCK too much:( I would love to see the brother's war/the phyrexian saga.. but for them to do it right.. would take 3 to 6 two hour+ long movies.. And while i would love them.. the average movie-goer.. would not care.. and the money needed for phyrexian/planeswalker special effects.. let alone karn.. would be huge.. oh but to get to see Urza, fighting in a giant mech.. on the phyrexian plane.. trying his best to destroy them.. but failing.. would be glorious
so if there is a magic movie.. it will just suck.. be a underfunded 90 minute piece of crap based on a OK setting and a story thats ripped to shreds to to fit the alloted time.. I have no hope that hollywood would do magic any justice on the big screen:(
Honestly I shuddered at the thought of a MTG movie.
If they did make a live action movie it would be the tragic and humiliating end of MTG itself.
They might be able to pull it off as an animated film, in that case it would be cool to either make it about the brothers war or Ravnica. Although I have never read the Brothers war, it seems like everyone here enjoyed it.
but speaking of Ravnica, Does anyone remember that well animated promo they did for Ravnica way back then? it was on the the official site and it looked pretty cool.
The Brother's War, Urza's Saga, and the Weatherlight cycle have two basic problems.
Urza is an ass, and everyone associated with him dies.
It's a hard sell. People like it when the good guys are likeable, and when the good guys win.
I've always felt that Time Streams would have made a good movie, though. The entire story takes place in two locations (tolaria, shiv with wide variety of distinctive locales - the core protagonists (Karn, Jhoira, Teferi) are "young" and can be identified with, while Urza is there but not whoring center stage. It's a great middle ground in the series which opens up lots of questions that can be answered later, without having to go through the trouble of doing all this epic world-traveling stuff right off the bat.

Urza is my favorite charecter so screw off! (Just jking). But seriously, Urza is really my favorite hero.

I agree.. and yes.. everyone dies.. but i mean thats the price you pay to destroy the ultimate evil... as a immortal planeswalker you uses mortals to fight your battles for you... as cannon fodder and research specimins.. just like in the third star wars movie.. obi wan sends clone star fighter pilots to their death/fight.. because that was their purpose. taken as a whole the brother's war is a epic story, that takes about 10+ books to complete.. (i just saw 16 magic sets between ice age and apoc.) I loved those books and storyline.. the books and plot now pale in comparison.. the phat pack with some packs and the set's book were always the first thing i would buy after a set's release.. now the books are such trash that i would not even waste time on them if they were free.
My point is that no matter how good the story is, hollywood is not going to spend the time and money making the movie good.. it will be like the D&D movie again.. you take a rich vivid world where anything can happen and you get a random crap movie about a crappy thief and a dragon controling wand.. like i said if they make a magic movie.. it will be 90 minutes of pure drivel, and prolly have 8 year olds playing the card game and magically a shivan dragon (charazard)appears from right out of a card and fights the ... whatever lame enemy they pick..
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie involving all 5 Planeswalkers. Since they travel planes, you could have a lot of the worlds involved in the movie, then have a rift pull them all together for a scheme concocted by Nicol Bolas. Just write a ridiculous script and film it pretty like. That's all we want.
