Well... WoW is getting a Movie... D&D has some... and for years i have seen rumors about magic getting one. I personally would love to see it if they did it right. Magic is far enough away from both LOTR and WOW to make it an interesting movie. HOWEVER. I would not want to see the Weatherlight Saga, at least not right away. I personally think a Movie based on the Brothers War would almost HAVE to be made considering almost ALL of the magic storylines, for every set, come from that one event. Maybe an intro similar to the Fellowship of the Rings where it has the elves and humans attacking Mordor would be acceptable, but I think a Urza's Block Movie, probably more than one, would be needed to at least set the stage for any future movies... Invasion would be visually stunning with those massive armies and beasties but without the Urza's Block and Weatherlight Saga before it... Invasion wouldn't do well.
Also you would need to look at when the game was most popular. Odds are to attract the biggest crowds of current and ex-players they would focus on the most familiar storyline/block to do for the first movie.
first off i must say, i'm slightly terrified at this idea. magic has so many stories that it may end up being one of the films made..
that being said, the weather light saga is not something i believe would be created. the story is on a LotR level of length (definitely more than 1 movie) and budget (if you think of all the costumes, weapons, cgi, etc)
the brothers war on the other hand, is one of the easier storylines to do, and is much shorter. the majority of the magic in that movie was basically the animatrons and mishra's phyrexian dragon, definitely doable i think
Actually any of the offshoot story lines like Ravnica, Kamigawa, or Lorwyn would make a decent starting point in a line of MTG movies. They could even do the Ice Age block books.
I'd guess you're being facetious, because Arabian Nights is itself based on that whole One Thousand and One Nights thing, so any movie based on that set would basically be a less-entertaining version of Disney's Aladdin.
Didn't Robot Chicken do a skit about how bad this idea was? I mean, are we gonna see Ben Stiller as Urza and Owen Wilson as Mishra, with a special showing of Christopher Walken as the mysterious Yawgmoth?
The problem with an MTG movie is that it's either going to be worse than the D&D movies (although those were meant to be funny, so they were supposed to be beyond stupid), or it'll be LOTR quality. There is nothing in the middle.
It's either going to be come out for a new block with a new story, or it'll probably follow some part of the Dominaria experience.
Are any of the books stand-alone so that they can turn one book into one movie without cutting out the entire plotline? If they try and turn ~10 years of plot into a 3 hour movie (let's be nice an assume that it's gonna be long), it can't be good. If there is a way to turn one book into a self-contained movie, it might kick ass. I'd love to see an MTG movie franchise.
I really doubt Magic will be made into a movie, if it is though it should be based on The Brother's War which I thought was an amazing peace of literature.
Shia walks back home and gets the girl. Megan Fox again?
Don't forget cameos by Mark Rosewater and Jon Finkle, lol.

The Brother's War is the only decent place to make a Magic movie. Starting with the Thran would be dull without a lot of foreshadowing that would make the movie suck. Starting with a world other than Dominaria would eliminate the possibility for a sequel, and would alienate their target audience; also, since every plot since Invasion (okay, since Nemesis, actually) has gone from mediocre to awful, there wouldn't be much to work with. Starting with the Weatherlight Saga would be too big of a project and would require cramming too much backstory and skipping basically all the character development. Even a trilogy just wouldn't be enough. Making a movie about the game itself would be awful and humiliating, even if they do a setting like Arena, which would feel very much like a combination of Yugioh and D&D to people these days.
The Brothers' War is the only serious choice. It has a great plot which can be done fairly concisely, it has loads of interesting characters and character development, it is not strongly game-related, so people will be able to enjoy it without knowing anything about the game. It doesn't require any foreshadowing to have the necessary sense of import, nor any backstory at all. And it has strong potential for sequels, if it happens to do well.
If it was really well done, it could actually be a good movie. But more importantly, it wouldn't actually have to be completely amazing in order for it not to completely suck. Seeing as I can't see 30-50 million bucks being poured into a film of this type, it's basically the only plot Magic has that wouldn't be a total embarrassment.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
If they did make one and it did suck I'd officially stop playing the game and personally slap everyone at Wizards, Hasbro, and anyone else involved in the making of the film.
Hmm, well I be for a Magic movie. Me I like the Weatherlight story done, but in a series not a movie seeing so much there. As for what be good as a movie I will vote Oddessy Block as movie 1-2 and make Onslaught Block movie 2-3. Also if possible get Vin Desle to be Kamahl or the guy from the Transporter seeing both could pull the role off.
As for any other Hasbro toys made a movie I vote we get the Potato Head Kids. Seeing I liked the cartoon back when I was a kid and could see the toys sale some Happy Meals.
I think it's something they actually said they thought about before, but if it hasn't panned out yet them I'm sure that they'll just focus on more mainstream Hasbro properties. Besides, I don't really see there being any way to make a compelling movie from the storyline other than the brothers' war or the Rath cycle, and neither of those are even remotely relevant to the game these days so it's not really productive.

Brings back memories of the Inquest "Magic:The Gathering Movie" sheet with Brad Pitt as Gerrard, Aaarnald as Karn, and Jim Carrey as Squee. It would be a good comedy (even if it wasn't meant to be).
One toss of the dice determines whether you win second prize in a beauty contest or go straight to jail. That's how it goes in the classic board game Monopoly, which is set to become a star of the silver screen after a deal agreed with Universal Pictures.
Under the six-year deal, Universal will produce at least four films based on Hasbro's brands, including Monopoly.
The first film will be released in either 2010 or 2011, with one film a year after that, the firms said.
The partnership will include Candy Land, Battleship and Ouija, but not Transformers and GI Joe, which are licensed to Paramount.
No financial terms, or plot details, were released by the companies.
US-based Hasbro, the world's second-largest toy firm, has more than 240 licensees from mobile phone games to footwear.
Universal Studios is part of media conglomerate NBC Universal, which is 80% owned by General Electric.

If they do it animated. And it's The Brother's War.
I wanna see Urza go boom.
Seriously, an animated MTG movie could work.

There is a decent built in audience mostly all the same guys/girls that went to see LotR might go see it.
Assuming they do it correctly and everything and yeah Brother's War is the only way to go 100%.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!

I hope they don't...
I just hope it's based on the Brothers' War, or on new, unknown Planeswalkers rather than any other existing storyline.

Way to jump to conclusions there. The article is about a deal to make movies based on Hasbro properties. Hasbro owns tons of properties.
