I know I don't post very often but I felt like I should say whatever everyone else has been saying on this one and say that's it's really good that everything worked out for ya R_E.
I'm very glad this got settled and that you will be back in the forum. It's a shame to lose your rumor godliness, but it's just good that this is behind, you are back on the forum, and the forum continues to exist. Congratulations.
Congrats! Glad to hear it's over... But I have a question... Is it just Magic rumors that you can't hear, or does WOTC have a listening device to stop you from any sort of gossip...
Coworker to RE: I heard so-and-so got a nose job...

I must express my heartfelt congratulations on settling the whole issue. I must say that I hope that whatever agreement that you came to is one that is fair and not overly harmful.
I would also like to thank Jay for going out on a limb to help you.
From me, my non-Salvation friends who play Magic, and even my parents who have also been recieving updates on the case, congratulations for putting all of that behind you.

DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
Well, that sucks that we can't get info about stuff before it comes out. Kinda defeats the purpose of the Rumor Mill and spoilers in general. Glad to hear that things turned out well for you, R_E.
Nice to see you able to resolve this issue somewhat peacefully, R_E, though I believe that all of us here are VERY sad to see you leave the Rumor Mill. In any event, I wish you many more happy years of MTG involvement and look forward to seeing your name in the other rooms around here.
PS: This is NOT an ass-kissing post; I mean what I say here.

Well...I still feel that WotC got much more from you than they should have, Daron, but as long as you're happy with the outcome, that's all that really matters.
I'm sure others will step up to fill the rumors void in time, and in the meantime, we'll just have to settle for the info we do manage to get from "official" sources. The only thing that bothers me about that is that there will be those who always get the full spoiler early, and now they'll have an unfair advantage on the rest of us at prereleases.
Glad your back.
I still wish to protest Wizards for going after a collector.
Also... In regards to your new signature...
I wish that every person that used to send you rumors would first post the info ANYWHERE online to make it public.. and then to supply you with the link so you could have proof it was public before you share it with us.
It has sucked soooo much with Dissention info. Very boring.
I do like the game, and like going to the Pre-releases.. but still wish there was some way to do something against Wizards for their craziness.
anyways... glad your back. hopefully you will be able to find public info and be able to report it to everyone.
I thought it would be a cool idea if someone could make a deck based on the incidences of all of this.. call the the Rancored_Elf Deck.. that somehow makes fun of Wizards. or the Wizards Lawyers Suck Deck.. LOL
Glad to see this awful mess is over with, and that you're in good spirits R_E!

Karma doesn't exist. You can't depend on it. If you count on it for justice or catharsis, you will find that you have placed your emotions on very unstable ground; and you will either repeat your disappointment in society over and over, or you will engage in a persistent delusion to protect yourself from that feeling.
Can I propose Haloscope be added to the Rumor Mill Heroes List? Defending R_E has to rank with helping fill out spoilers - and I suspect that without some defence for the Elf, Hasbro might have gone further and faster after the 'Mill as a whole.
Congrats to the survivors....impressive job, Mr. H!
Are we to assume there was no "decision" nothing we can tangibly look at to say who's case was right/wrong or at least more so? Sad that this couldn't be a clear-cut learning opportunity on this developing piece of law.
well that means we'll have less spoiler information so wizards won't get as may preorders but i guess that's what they wanted glad to hear it was settled in some fasion. Very glad to hear that you'll be around R_E!!

Cangratulations Darron! It is apparent you've had to make concessions on spoiler activity, but hopefully that's as far as it extends and the settlement did not greatly impact you financially.

The Golden Rule of forums: If you're going to be rude, be right. If you might be wrong, be polite.
I wish to add my name to the Daron and family well wishers list. I also would like to thank Jay (Haloscope) for being an awesome person and lawyer. And I will still boo WotC/Hasbro for sueing a fan.
I do have a question or two about settlements. When a settlement is reached that is mutually agree to the parties involved does that end the court case?
The reason that I am asking is that Daron was the only named defendant. There were 10 john does also listed in the complaint.
Did they have to be a party to the settlement? Does it even matter?
Did wizards only drop the suit against Daron and leave the 10 john does there? Or does the whole thing go away with the settlement.
Also can wizards comment on the settlement?
These look like stupid question but the legal system is complex, hence the need for lawyers.
Glad you were able to resolve the dispute Elf. Lame that you'll be gimpped on posting rumor info, but if I was in your shoes I'd have taken the same deal. In any event, I'm sure we'll have a few brave souls tempt fate and post some juicy info in the future.
Also thanks to Haloscope for helping you pro-bono like that.
I have asked R_E if I could get in trouble for posting rumors people send me a few times before, since it concerns me directly, so I will answer a few worries.
Spoilers are not going to stop. At all.
I will be more careful in what is said when posting new cards, and any obviously huge early leak will not be posted either.
Hopefully it will only be a matter of time for the spoilers to turn out as usual, but I can't guarantee anything, as I am rather sure this suit has spooked many a potential source.
I am glad that R_E got out of this without seemingly having his livelihood destroyed. I see it as a victory, (even though he can't talk about it) just because it was him vs. Hasbro, and it is very hard to take on a corporation and not be squished. Haloscope is definately a very good lawyer.
I do not expect this site to lose traffic due to R_E no longer being a source of any rumors.
Recent rumors posted here have gotten large amounts of traffic, so people will continue to look here for the most up to date and accurate spoiler information, and we will continue to be the first place to find most new cards.
I do not hold anything against WoTC (as long as they don't go after me ) and I am more than excited to be going to the DIS prerelease, which is two weeks away.

yeah - obviously I disagree with you, John. Spam Warning!.....Amazing - even in a forum where posts don't count, there's spam. That proves that getting rid of the post-count won't help getting rid of spam! Thans for this excellent example! - Craven

I am glad to hear that you are coming out of this unharmed financially. Good luck to you and your family in the future.
I know to day was the day the judge was going to make his ruling on your motion to quash. I am assuming he denied this motion, and allowed the case to continue and this is why you cut a deal? Did you guys have this deal ready in case this is what happened?
I will be interested to see where Wizards case goes from here. I am assuming that Daron gave whatever information he could about the John Does, so I wonder if we will see some future action against some new people working for Wizards, or was this really all about Daron the whole time?
It would seem that unofficial spoiler information has now come to an end as far as Daron is concerned. It really was not all about the prototype cards, because they are obviously preventing him from talking about ANY unofficial spoiler info he receives. This might not bode well for anyone else who tries to take up the mantle of ‘spoiler guy’. Well, I can’t say I am unhappy, because I just don’t think the magic community is going to be any worse off without unofficial spoilers, and I don’t think Wizards is going to make more or less money without them either.
Daron: Glad to hear things are settled - just having that stress off will probably be a great relief, no matter what the cost. Best wishes to you and yours, and I really hope everything worked out as well as it could.
Jay: Thank you for being able and willing to do what you did. Daron and his family are definintely not the only ones who appreciate it.
To play devil's advocate here, I have to assume one of the following took place (or possibly a combination of them) for Hasbro to agree to settle:
- R_E agreed to never spoil anything about MTG cards again (as evidenced in his new sig).
- R_E gave Hasbro some names to go after instead of him; i.e. bigger fish to fry.
- R_E has to pay a reduced amount of money to Hasbro.
_ The fine was only suspended and if Hasbro can show R_E does spoil something, that fine becomes immediately due. Sort of an insurance policy to keep R_E straight.
Whatever happened, don't get me wrong, I'd have done whatever was necessary to get me out of a situation like that.
I also think Hasbro was keeping a close eye on the spoilers coming out for Dissension. Not much has come out, so they must have felt what they did worked. If we had gotten the same amount of spoilers for Dissension that we had for Ravnica and Guildpact, I wonder if Hasbro would have settled now?
