Completely seconded. Ed's artwork has always been nice, not quite Kev Walker or Rebecca Guay, but not quite Ron Spencer either (frankly, I don't like Spencer's art at all, they are always too cluttered with comic-book-like details).
One Hundred percent thirded. I'm still skeptical since our only proof is that a supposed judge allegedly saw a printout at a PR that confirmed this, but I'll just go along as if it's' real for now.
EPB Jr may not have been the absolute best artist, but he's nowhere near the bottom, either. He's somewhere in the middle, but still in good company.
I just can't believe they fired anybody at all over this, something so subjective. If they ever fired Cavotta, there'd be hell to pay. As it is, they've gotten a passionate, yet mature angry letter from me.
You know, there are people that play Magic for art also, people. I don't base EVERYTHING on the art, but if it's good, I usually try to get it in foil so I can admire it more, especially with the new way the foil is in the art. I've got cards that really suck, Walker of Secret Ways, Tanglewalker, and others in foil, JUST BECAUSE THE ART IS GOOD.
Besides, Pete Venters is the best artist of all. He did that awesome rendition of Coercion with Greven il-vec, back when the characters weren't bad.
I like his artwork. He has made some of my favortie artwork like The Elder Legend Dragons. Why get rid of him now when he been here since Alpha?

Dunno 'bout the rest of you, but I'd rather see Spencer dumped than Beard any day.
Seriously- his drawings resembles cheesy '80s comic art. Donato, Avon and even Guay's shoddiest work at least looks and feels like a Magic card- Spencer's just plain drawing for the wrong game.
I know the guy who owns the original Psychatog art and it is very good. I'm not just saying that 'cos its a good card either. Most of the rest of his work I find fairly so-so though. My friend also owns Jungle barrier which is definitely so-so when you look at it.
Besides, Pete Venters is the best artist of all. He did that awesome rendition of Coercion with Greven il-vec, back when the characters weren't GAY.
Oh dude, come on ....... the characters were always gay. Volrath totally had a sub/dom S&M thing happening with Greven and that control spine. And, um, Ertai. No explanation needed for him.
And Venters is indeed pretty good, but he's no Cavotta or Walker. Or Avon, who does lands better than anyone.
In the past 48 hours, I have personally seen over 100 players at the Orlando, FL, Savior's Prerelease disagree. For those of you who have seen the new card Reki, the History of Kamigawa, this is the continued quality of work that they are removing from the game.
To show your support for Beard's work, either contact Wizards through email or their message boards. Inquest is also doing an article about this poor decision.
Hear hear! I was in Orlando, too. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet him. As others have said, he's not really one of my favourites, but his work is definitely awesome. This is definitely a move Wizards needs to rethink, I have no idea how they think no one likes his work. I'll definitely send my e-mail in support.
What we're doing here is akin to taking the text of Moby Dick, locating specific words therein, rearranging them to create a passage from Fight Club, and concluding from this evidence that Tyler Durden is based on Ahab.
I'm still skeptical since our only proof is that a supposed judge allegedly saw a printout at a PR that confirmed this, but I'll just go along as if it's' real for now.
I was at the Orlando pre-release and saw the same printout on Edward Beard's table.

I was at the Orlando pre-release and saw the same printout on Edward Beard's table.
So is it a printout to inform the fans? If so, why haven't we gotten the same news through Wizards itself? Or at least some other official channel. If it wasn't some kind of notice for the fans, why would Beard carry around what basically amounts to a pink slip?
It's not that I don't believe you, I just think I'm missing something and that's keeping this from making much sense.
DAMN YOU WIZARDS!!! FIRST YOU DUMP THE FOGLIOS FOR NO REASON AT ALL AND THEN YOU TRY TO GET RID OF GUAY AND NOW YOU SHAVE THE BEARD!!!! I quit! Not really, but am sad to see Ed Beard go...

I think wizards has made a poor decision.... he is justone of the many who is producing high quality "adult work" and being punished. I think wizards work on cards has been subpar at best and I think there trying to go more towards younger audience. I hope they do not continue this form of action. Sry Ed.?!?!

yes turning of the tide that was a nice, props on breaking the deck
A) That's spammy.
B) That's discriminatory.
C) I don't see how a decision can have a preference.
However, I do agree that it's a mistake. As shown by this thread, he's hardly unpopular. But then, they've made mistakes in the past, like laying off the Foglios.
You know, no matter what the players say Wizards is going to do what they want to do. I've been playing for quite a while now, seen banning, unbannings card redesign, and every time wizards did it anyway. Do the junkies really ever get a break from the dealers? Has there ever been a decision WotC has made, that the players have changed the outcome of? Has anyone ever made enough noise the Wizards actully listened?
Rebecca Guay gets fired. Firestorm of angry fans ensues. Rebecca Guay gets re-hired. So I guess there's been at least one decision the fans altered.

I have a feeling people think psychatog's art is awesome because the card is awesome. I wonder how many people would say psychatog's art is awesome if the card sucked.

Oddity is right here I think... I mean, look at it! Psychatog is definitely on par with art the likes of weakstone. Pure crap from any aesthetic standpoint. Psychatog is NOT the card to cite in Beard's defense.

They should only let Guay do one illustration per set, as they are all basically the same. I did enjoy Hair-Strung Koto, though.
Care to explain how "they are all basically the same?" If you mean, "they are all equally superior to the rest of the art in Magic," then I might agree, but I'm not sure that's what you mean. I do agree with you about the koto though, so much so that I purchased the original! I sure as hell wouldn't want a psychatog up on my wall, but this one is fine.

He's not my favorite artist, but he has made his mark. Ah well, better to have drawn and lost than to have never drawn at all. People said the same thing about Drew Tucker but that doesn't stop people from wanting the Unlimited Plateau or 4x High Tide.
Woot you dont like psychatog??? I like it a lot.. And even tough I do like guay I really like woul rather have a psychatog then a hair strung koto on my wall

Just add me on msn if you have any questions or just want to talk
Its all a smoke screen. This was discussed on another site in detail and the mod locked both threads as she thought we were being unkind to AD Jeremy Cranford. Ed claimed he had a talk with Jeremy about his work and Jeremy was very rude and unprofessional and Ed claimed that it was a big inside joke in the AD that his Birds of Paradise art was used as a dartboard in the offices there. Of course this is a serious charge and all kind of damage control was brought out, including one of Jeremy's friends and co-workers, Brady D. to defend Jeremy and basically called Ed a liar in so many words. What ticked me off was that Jeremy was to much of a coward to come on the boards and defend himself and his postion against's Ed's words (which IMO i believe-at the very least, they were unprofessional to him). Since myself and others in the thread spoke out against this and the site was WOTC sponsered, of course the mod's locked both threads as they want you only to talk nice about the all powerful AD of WOTC! Others felt like i did, but it was shut down. All we were looking for was a response from Jeremy. Never came. He has made some poor and controversial descions to really alientate core groups of fans (such as the Guay incident) and does not really seem to care. It appears as if he is untouchable and can act in such unprofessional ways as he surrounds himself with his own people who are ardent supporters and defend him, so he does not have to himself.
Thus, the comment about Ed was no surprise. You speak out against "the king" and you "disappear" I just hope someone in power over there reins this guy in, otherwise, more will "disappear" and then it will be to late
Additionally, i am not saying Jeremy's job is easy. He only has so many piece to assign and a lot of artists that want to do it, but..... 1) you can break up the distribution of pieces more fairly and justly, rather then giving your own favorites like 7 pieces and people who you dont like (we might like them!) None. Additonally, if you dont like a piece an artist sends it, you can treat him/her with respect and dignity and not use their art as a dartboard, which Ed claims is true.
So you speak up and you are axed. Whether you like his art or not i think this is wrong. Personally i am no great fan of Ed's art, but i respect his courage as a person to speak up when he thinks he was wronged.
I don't mind Phil Foglio not being around anymore. Cooperation, Humility, and Taunt for example, show how bad his work matches the current "serious" look of wizards. Kaja was decent, but I guess that if you sack one...
Ans just because wizards read our forums anyway, I'm going to list some of Ron Spencer's worst recent artworks, so they can fire him and re-hire Beard.
I also am not a fan of ron spencer, half the time I don't have a clue what's going on in the picture (ala Planar Chaos, Confusion in the Ranks, and others)
I have no problems with Beard's work. It's fine artwork, not the greatest I've ever seen, but also far from the worst. If this is an excuse on Wzards' part, then I'm very disappointed with them.
I have to disagree with you Onderzeeboot, I rather like Ron Spencer's artwork. I go with WotC's decision of giving Beard the boot because I just don't favor that type of art. Same with Phil Foglio and Martina Pilcerova. Not really liking that stuff. Rebecca Guay has some good stuff in her art and it's not terrible and WotC should slap themselves for not including her art in the Mirrodin block because some stuff would look better than it does now. Ravnica will be interesting with Beard gone because I can say he was good at making his art look decently real. The preview is a bit cartoonish however so i'm not sure how the current artists will fit in. I say "skip Ravnica and return to Domninaria" or "stay on Kamigawa, it's freakin shweet."
If this unfortunate news is true, it's sadly ironic that he was the artist for this. The reason is absurd, as shown by previous posts in this thread, it's a matter of opinion. Even so, if this thread is any evidence, there hardly seems to be any united negative view towards Beard.
I personally think that Ron Spencer is fine, and I completely disagree with whoever attacked Paolo Parente. Armadillo Cloak much? Perhaps the artwork in, say, Planar CHAOS or CONFUSION in the Ranks is supposed to be...chaotic or confusing. The fact that someone mentioned that they like Glitterfang is just further proof that fan opinion is hardly concrete.
In any case, I think that recent sets have shown a continual rise in artistic quality (now if only they were playable...), and I hope that Beard remains involved with MTG.
You cannot support ed beard on the wizards boards, because they will not hear it. the douchebag director cranford hate ed and is doing everything he can to get rid of him. any thread supporting ed are eliminated and thier creators banned permenantly. I have met ed many times and he is a Great guy, who does exatly the style of art I love, Classic Fantasy styled. none of this dark brooding sh1t they have the artists doing now. have you seen Puddnheads website? it is all pedofilia art! he has nothing but senior citizens doing sick things to children in the art on his website.
this is who we want drawing for magic over Ed?
