Hello all! ria covered the important stuff, so I'll just provide a bit of my own background. I got hooked on Magic near the end of 2002, when a friend bought a two-player Seventh Edition starter set and we tried it out. I swiftly bought my own, and set about getting everyone I knew into the game (or trying, at least).
I remained very much a kitchen table casual player for about six years, although I managed to build up a sizeable collection (and get it stolen. Twice). I think the first tournament I attended was the Dissension prerelease, and as I started regularly attending prereleases, I slowly began to learn more about the wider world of the game.
2009 was my tipping point. I started ordering singles online (and found out just how much cheaper the game is in the US) and took an interest in learning the rules formally. One of the friends I'd gotten into the game years ago also found out about this burgeoning casual format called EDH, which took our playgroup by storm (although I'm pretty sure the first EDH deck I made had Ronin Houndmaster in it).
Later that year, I thought it would be fun to make an account on that spoiler site everyone used. Hmm. My grasp of the rulebook was apparently good enough by that point that the guys over in Rulings thought me worthy of the Rules Guru title only four months after I joined, which I remain grateful for (although I'm not sure I would have agreed at the time). As my interest in EDH grew, I started to go to that board a fair bit too.
And the rest is fairly straightforward. I'm a mod here now, I recently became a judge, I started playing at FNMs about a year ago, and I have spent far too much money on this game.
Apart from Magic...well, though English by birth, I was born in Switzerland, raised in Germany, and have also ended up in Australia! Figure that one out. And if you happen to live around these parts and be a TF2 player, hit me up here and say hello! I run a couple of servers, so you might see me around.
By the way, don't feel your own introduction thread has to have as much in it as our posts do! Expect more replies if you give people something to talk about, though.
I've almost completely dropped out of competitive Magic; the way the price trending has gone these last few sets has made it impossible for me to T2, especially when regardless of the US/AUS exchange rate, prices here in Adelaide are almost invariably 2x list. & there isn't a real Legacy scene here, although EDH is catching on, yay.
So it's mainly pre-releasin' & casual/drafting at the kitchen table for me
I am not new to the site but I am new to being a registered member instead of being the troll that lurks beneath the keyboard, glancing at others words of wisdom or pearls of ignorence. Either nodding in agreement or laughing with frustration.
But since I decided to take the next step in registering I might as well drop a line in the "who the heck am I page."
I am a medic that works on the oil platforms off the coast of california for weeks at a time, then come home to a loving puppy and a lonely fiance. When I get to come home for a weekend you can usually catch me on friday night's at the local card shop seeing what I missed the previous weeks.
I am not a competitive complainer, I mean player.
I do however never pass on a opportunity to play ante, which I am known for doing 2-3 times a friday night before the actual games begin or just after. For those that sneer or jeer at this, let me qualify the rules I use in ante and are agreed upon before doing so:
You play the deck that you intend to play during friday night magic, not some pauper deck (all commons) trying to get one of my rares or mythics.
Before the ante card is set aside, all basic land is stripped from the decks. If we play before FNM any cards won or lost cards respectivly stays with that person until the games are officially over, as not to distrupt the flow of thier deck.
The losing player can always offer a "no look" trade for somethign in his binders.
Even if its 4 commons for whatever that one card may be, if they are something I know I need, Ill take the deal.
Sometimes I have gotten really good cards this way, and losing some good ones as well. John if you ever read this I would like that Phyrexian Obliterator back someday... what do you need, because im sure I got it
Next person to say Sorin is becoming w/b will be teleported to Jin-Gitaxias' labs with a sign saying 'everything usable except for the brain'.
We have been practically told it won't happen. If (and this is an if so large it alters weather patterns) Sorin adds a color, it will likely be red. And even then, hedonism (which seems to be the main argument for) is still black. Self-indulgence is black.
Howdy, sorry it took so long for the reply. Unfortunately there isn't anyone out here that plays other then myself, if they had I would have smelled the geek on 'em and called them out on it. At most games are limited to call of duty etc. nothing table top.
As far as ante goes, I try to make competitive decks and I use whatever cards are in the deck. Recently I have lost a foil obliterator because of it, and my opponent didn't even care to look in my binder for a trade. Oh well, its how it goes, sometimes you win some, other times you don't. So no I don't have any specific deck I use for ante games. Any standard deck vs another standard is fine in my book. I wont bring a deck to the table that I am afraid is going to lose or wouldn't at least hold its own.
This makes for real interesting transactions though, and I must say when I walk into the card shop there is normally 3 or 4 people who start busting out thier "im going to win something good tonight decks". The funny thing is that they often make decks with one or two rares and know that my deck is going to be competitive, so they are tossing crap my way while I hose them down, but there are those few who also make competitive decks and lose the fear and go for it and these are the games that generally make a huddle around the table. Whens the last time you saw 5 to 7 other players intently watching a duel of decks at a FNM? It really does capture attention and moans and groans of the crowd when cards are played that are key. I personally believe that the Ante aspect of Magic the Gathering brings an element that should have never been forgotten.

So this is where I introduce myself huh?
Well first my name is just a combination of my middle and last names Paul+La Bruyere= Plab
So I started playing around 6 years ago but wasn't hooked until i pulled a sun titan in an M11 pack
I rarely buy packs so my collection is practically my deck. Because of this I play on a program named Lackeyccg (user Labruyere) I hope to see some people to play EDH with later. Oh and one more thing where can i find how to post deck lists and other things of that nature?

Welcome, Plab! I've been known to get on Lackey from time to time, although there is a big push in the community to use Cockatrice. Haven't tried it out yet myself.

I'm from Belgium and I play mostly casually (FNM's draft and T2), and enjoy from time to time attending GPT/PTQ's especially if they're sealed deck. I've played this game mainly since M11 was released and I enjoy it so much. I play also MTGO now and then but not that much. I hope to enjoy this website!
I'm from New York but currently located in Nebraska. this site has saved me from o much boredom at work so i decided to join :).
i started playing around two years ago and did a little competitive then but started gearing back into it. ive never used any online test sites or anything so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be crazy helpful! my favorite decks to play are basically any color combo with green, but im expanding my options thanks for letting me enjoy Magic with you all!
Hello everyone, I am Derek I am currently a senior in college about to graduate with a BS in History/Anthropology and a minor in Museum Studies.
I started playing back in the Odyssey Block and played very casually up to about Kamigawa and then stopped since I had no one to play with any more. But once I got into college I met some of my now friends who played and I am now getting back into it.
I mostly play white for reasons I will never understand and have a strange affinity with Pacifism But I am trying to expand my Magic palette into different colors and playing competitively.
Welcome to the site Rehj Knight! Glad to hear you're moving towards the dark side!
Well, since I just became a moderator of this section, I guess I'd better throw something up here too... I first started playing Magic way back during Ice Age, and began playing more seriously sometime around Ravnica. I play plenty of Standard and Limited, but my favourite format is EDH. Red is my favourite colour, and always has been ever since I built my "X-spell deck" with as many Fireballs, Disintegrates and Lava Bursts as I could find! So bad, but don't worry, I've since learned what a mana curve is. Outside the game, I'm also a big fan of Magic's rich storyline. C'mon down to the Storyline forum if you want to learn a bit more about those cards you're fooling around with!
Outside Magic, I've got a wife and a son who was just born Christmas Eve, 2011. We also foster kids, most of whom leave with a small Magic collection of their own :D. We don't have a TV, which is a good thing since I've got far too many hobbies including sports, enjoying the outdoors, playing board games, drawing, painting and music. I'm also a member of [The Crafters] clan here on MTGS.
Hello, my name is Ben and I live in SoCal. I was introduced to MtG about 3 months ago and gradually the disease has been taking over. About a month ago while I was at target I finally gave in and bought the starter box just to have for random casual games. Now I'm at my local magic store every other day building decks:D right now I'm working on a mono white, white token, and mono green. the plan is to make my first mix deck after I understand the combo more extensively, with white and green.
Have to say it's been a cool hobby and I've enjoyed it very much. I'm now starting to get into the story line and really delve into characters etc.
Look forward to making friends and picking ppls brains and gaining some knowledge.
Hi all! Anthony here, and a Socal Native. I was introduced to MTG a year and 1/2 ago when my teacher handed me 20 mountains and a Chandra Nalaar. After that my buds did the rest. Currently playing FNM T2 Junk POD. EDH Kaalia is fun and then just casual w/e decks. Like i said earlier i'm working on T2 and saw a thread on it, but i'm new to the site so i don't really know how to post up deck lists and things. Help? aha. Great to join this community, have a good one!

Hello to everyone! Long time player, and I've lurked on these forums for ages, but never really considered participating until recently. I started playing around with magic in '95, but didn't get really involved with it until Mercadian. I quit playing around Onslaught though, because of life changes and other obligations. Around last December my brother and a friend of mine dragged me back into it, and I have to say, I've been loving it. Hard to adjust to some of the changes, and Commander/EDH is something I had never experienced, but am steadily growing to love. Hopefully I can find ways to contribute to this community, as well.
Hey everyone blockie here, weird nick name yes, anyway been playing since earlier the year caught the end of dark ascension and begining of avacyn. Picked up the koth duel deck with a buddy who took the venser deck and we both been hooked since. I play casual multiplayer wit a couple friends here in south africa, did try standard but its hard to get the truly competitive cards here, and to be honest multiplayer is more fun.
Hello, the name is flame rider and i've been playing magic for a few months now. I would like to start doing tournaments and stuff, but i'm taking everything with one step at a time.
Hello, my username is radio414, and is radio414 everywhere you will probably go out and look for me. If you do see me, that's great, and you should totally say hi. If you see me being a jerk, it's either not me, or I'm heavily tilted.
There are two ways to fix this.
1) Target me. I'm too cheap to have any clone other than Phantasmal Image
2) Call me on it and tell me to calm down. Normally I recognize when I'm a jerk, but if I don't, tell me to take a few deep breaths and I should be okay.
Other than those two points, I started at the MBS prerelease, and generally draft at FNM's and play casually when I can.

Hello, my name is Chris. I'm from the breezy laid back city of San Diego. Got into magic at 7th grade, when I saw people playing in the halls and at lunch. Walked into the comic book store and bought my first starter and few boosters of unlimited. Was hooked when I learned the game! I've been collecting on and off and have a modest collection of decent deck making cards. Seen the game change in many ways, good and bad. Since I started back in the day when cards weren't as powerful, certain abilities and styles of expansions got more exciting. When the Zendikar block hit the stage, the game completely stepped up another level(even more than the ability affinity, but affinity was awesomely broken too). Creatures as beefy as emrakul and hellcarver demon(some may not agree with hellcarver and say it's not competitive, It is completely broken every time when played by someone that knows how to combo off of combos). My style of playing has changed since my beginnings. When I first started, I played savannah lions and Serra angels. Every point mattered! It was more like a chess match. Now I have such powerful cards and combos, combing off of others. I challenge myself to figure the combos out then pair them together and find out what ones work well and actualy boost the overall deck. It was very common to go 20 turns in old school. Because of all the blocks and stops. Now you're not a champion unless you're swinging for the win 2nd or 3 Rd turn in extended, and 5th and 6th turn wins in new blocks. I still find enjoyment playing this game after 18 years, that should say a lot about these cards. Fun to collect and you can always pick back up later and play others years later. I always mix my colors and now a days use nonbasic lands like scalding tarn(landfall lands)for the deck thinning ability. Most all my decks finish people in ways they don't plan on defending nor prepare for. I set up the mechanis of combos then test for ways to stop the combo from happening then fill in the hole or adjust mechanics. It's amazing how many time your deck changes, but when you find your masterpiece it's amazing to see it do it's thing! I prefer to buy my cards online now since it's cheaper than buying packs. That way I get 4 of the same mythic rares I need for less than the price of buying 4 packs in many cases. If you're a player that will tend to be an on and off again player, I recommend sticking to the core sets(like m12, m13,ect), because many of the cards get reprinted and are useable in new tourneys years from now. Expansions are more of a collectors after 3 years when they get dropped from most tourneys. My biggest tips to newbies when creating a deck flow always remember to have creature control, the challenge is to control the board not just your side. The board has many ways of being manipulated such as, your library, graveyard, flipping cards in and out of exile, combing cards across many sets and finding loopholes or broken combos, also manipulation of all these points on your opponents side as well. Many times you may use a creature for an ability and not as much the creature. Same goes with many cards across the board. So if a card looks useless, ask yourself why and try and figure a way to break it. Lol I'm not referring to commons as much as misunderstood rares. Like magosi waterviel(you skip your NEXT turn and then you can sack it for an extra turn) sounds like a crap card till you figure out it's not legendary! If you can get 3 or 4 magosi's out and tap all of them at the same time, you skip your next turn to be able to sack each of them for an extra turn! Great deal, skip one turn to get 3 or 4! Many cards like that out in this game. Also pay attention to cards like omniscience specially when pared with damia, sage of stone! Look it up it's brutal(so far I'm the only one that's posted about this combo, so use it in your tourneys and you'll turn some heads). It's all about getting omniscience and damia, out at the same time. I've found by mixing it with hellcarver and world at war, I'm taking 12 points of life of their score at the same time getting 12 cards off the top of my library to play mana free(omniscience, damia, sage of stone) that leads to everything in your deck ends up in your hand and being able to play your hand without casting costs! It ruins the game in a way because it's just broken! Then your challenge is combing to get hellcarver out faster(animate dead or semblance anvil + a throw away cheap demon), the blue doppleganger for 2 that allows you to put hellcarver down and then use the copy of the doppleganger to swing a turn sooner. Well I thank you if you've read this far and as you can tell I can talk your ear off about magic, love the game and community. You guys hit me up if you have questions or want to chat. -Chris
Aaaah, greetings! :3 Feel free to just call me Chibi- people I know browse this site a lot, and it would be weird for them to know I'm on here, which is why I'm uncomfortable giving out my actual name. >> >>
I've just recently gotten into competitive Magic. Thus, I'm terrible at it. I've played Magic for about... 2 years now. My boyfriend is a freakin nut over it. Much more than I. -.-''
I'm really only here for the writing contests. I'd do the art contests too if I had the space or the talent. D8 I'll talk about Magic intensely only on rare occasions. It just depends on the subject/cards involved. Not here to pick fights or brains. Just to write, really. But if you want to chat, I won't bite.
Just posted something in the Poetry Contest. :3 I am very excited.

Hi, Long Con here. I've been poking around at Wizards.com forums for a bit, and someone mentioned that this is where it's at for Standard Deck analysis and comparison, so I thought I'd sign up and check it out!
Howdy. I've been an off and on player for years. I bought my first starter deck from Revised and followed for a few more years through high school. I dropped it in college, picked it up around Ravinica and dropped it again.
I'm back since AVR and really digging it. I really loved playing limited sealed deck games. I've yet to try drafting outside of mtgo, and it intimidates me a little bit, but I think I'll make my way there soon.
I really dug the guild packs for this pre-release and I wish I hadn't worked Saturday so I could have gone to a few more events.
Looking forward to getting deck advice as I'm planning to start heading to FNMs here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Thanks to all of the folks who make the site happen, I look forward to spending too much time here!
Hello, KidSomalia here. I'm still working my way up the food-chain, i'm moving to canada next year and I hope I can have a MTGO account, since I currently live in Brasil, were is tuff to make ends meet ($-wise);
even so, i play MTG since 1998, when cards started to be available in stores in the city I was born and raised.

I could never imagine playing for ante, even just among my friends! I'm guessing you don't run a lot of promo/altered art cards in your ante deck
I do however love playing the ante cards in Shandalaar, but Contract from Below is brrrrroken, what can you do?

Welcome to the forum!
See you guys on the threads cheers.
Had a penchant for trick'ry and teasin'.

What I mean is without why or wherefore.

But welcome to the forums, radio414! Good luck not being a jerk!
Thanks to all of the folks who make the site happen, I look forward to spending too much time here!
even so, i play MTG since 1998, when cards started to be available in stores in the city I was born and raised.
