Elves is the same deck it always has been, but now there are several modes of attack, all of which involve dumping your hand onto the table and beating for lethal.
I orginally had 2 Forge tenders main but now that 5cc is dead I don't think they are as necessary (to stop fall out).
My big problem with the deck is sometimes I don't know what to do when you can like primal command but you don't have enough mana guys to regal force. I was running 1 MD oversoul of dusk (cutting a warcaller) to bash decks like jund which can keep killing your elves but now the main aggro deck jund almost always runs demigod to just fly over and kill you.
The windbrisk heights always seem good and I could see running 3, as it gives the deck more gas/manipulation. I can't see going under 20 lands as it seems you just scoop if your turn 1 mana elf dies.
I love Elves but with Fae being so good Fallout sees play in every damn deck
I think you have to splash White for Mark of Asylum or Dauntless or something. There is no way you can be competitive with a mono-green list.
I played Elves! in the 2009 Standard season once M10 was released... And played them in the 2010 Extended season, before extended shrunk a little... This extended version is almost identical to that list
Lets start with a look at a list that did well at worlds.
This list took 2 pilots to 15 points out of 18 on day three at worlds:
The ideas behind this deck are to use the Nettle Sentinel + Heritage Druid combo to make a lot of mana, play a lot of creatures, use Regal Force to draw more creatures and eventually use Primal Command to put enough of your opponents lands on top of their library so that they can't play Day of Judgement to spoil your fun...
Ranger of Eos and Fauna Shaman are used to find the various creatures needed to set up the combo. I, personally, am not sold on Ezuri, Renegade Leader, despite the cute interaction with Devoted Druid, which this list does not run, although with an active Elvish Archdruid, the druid taps to regenerate your entire team, with the exception of Ezuri himself...
The Joraga Warcaller is in there largely as a Ranger of Eos target for when you start to run out of ideas, also because it can make your team more resilient to Volcanic Fallout... Because of its tutorability though, I would be only running one, and would be running an extra Joraga Treespeaker. The list I ran in standard only had 16 lands... 20 lands seems way too many for a deck with so many mana elves. I would not be playing less than 3 Regal Force and it would be hard to convince me to play less than the full 4.
I don't see why you wouldn't run 1 Burrenton Forge-Tender main deck. So many of the decks that did well at worlds had at least 2 Volcanic Fallout main, most of them had 3 copies, so having 1 Burrenton Forge-Tender does not screw with the odds much at all, while still having the ability to tutor for it with either Fauna Shaman or, more likely, Ranger of Eos...
After all that, here is the decklist I have sleeved up so far:
Elves do seem to have some options as a deck, one, you could splash black for thoughtsieze and doom blade, or you could go white and pick up ranger of eos, burrenton forge-tender, and path to exile. Ive seen players go either way, in fact, ive never faced a repeat decklist from elves, its always something different.
Ive even seen a person try out a few copies of mosswort bridge and emrakrul in G/W elves...
From personal experience, about 3 Regal Force seems best so you dont mistakenly mill yourself into a game loss, and Ezuri, Renegade Leader is about the best card you could ask for, at least 2 should be in deck. More than 2 could be a problem though, but that is what Fauna Shaman is for.
Blue has a lot of interesting things, but I cant seem to make it work...Id love to use Cryptic Command, Unified Will, and a few others with the elf army, but cant seem to pull it together.
Has anyone considered Omnath, Locus of Mana as a one or two of? It would help store up mana for Emrakul or Regal Force stall the board against aggro and swing for huge ammounts against control.
I'll certainly be playing it. and if you doubt the usefulness of this spell.... well, good luck! lol. You'll be on the receiving end of it soon enough, when your Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker gets turned into an elephant.
Blue splash would be best for Distant melody which is the closest we have to glimpse right now. Sadly blue does nothing to solve the volcanic fallout problem. The best idea I could come up with for stoping fallout is like run 4 spreading seas and target the red lands!
The only board options that I'm most satisfied with are Dauntless Escort and Burrenton Forge Tender. The Dauntless Escorts are there for matchups in which I expect Day of Judgment, obviously. The War Caller's are main because I anticipate more Volcanic Fallout, and a double-kicked War Caller freezes Fallout.
But I have been considering boarding into something that is more burn/shrink spell resistent, maybe even Leatherback Baloths and Oversouls of Dusk, both of which are impervious to fae removal (aside from Commanding the Baloth). Maybe a board like:
3 BFT
2 Dauntless
4 VV
4 Leatherback
2 Oversoul
??
Aside from boarding options, I was considering the play style of this deck. In some matchups, I find myself most inclined to hold back cards. In others, it's best to just run everything out there. What do you guys think is appropriate style vs. the various matchups?
I don't understand how you could accidentally mill yourself with a regal force... I always keep a close count on the number of cards in my library...
Also Regal Force is a tutorable Distant Melody, why would you run both?
I agree with not running Gilt Leaf Archdruid, he is too expensive and doesn't do anything relevant... As for Ezuri, I have been testing him and have been rather under whelmed... Primal command is how you delay Wrath, generally buying one turn is enough... Hence I wouldn't be running less than 4... Ranger of Eos is also a very good way of recovering from it...
well... 2 lords out solves the problem ususally, without resorting to cards like Coat of Arms or Door of Destinies, which in the older elfball builds were kinda semi-staples if I'm not mistaken (although gaea's anthem really did it for me)
Coat of Arms and Door Of Destinies were only played in the casual versions, I don't recall seeing any make Top 8's or anything like that...
The multiple Primal Command version was much more consistent both in play and results from that standard era...
And if you read my earlier post, i mentioned a couple of ways to deal with Fallout, but nothing beats familiarity with the deck and careful play...
So I went with the:
2 BFT
4 VV
4 Leatherback Baloth
3 Dauntless
2 Oversoul
board, and against fairies, I have -3 visionary -3 shaman -1 giltleaf -1 ezuri, +4 vv +4 leatherback +2 oversoul, and they have been utterly destroyed.
I also found Ezuri too weak. So I cut the 1 I had main and 1 Elvish Visionary for 2 Noble Hierarchs, as they make t2 Baloth all the more likely.
As far as the Giltleaf Archdriud goes, I like it a lot. A card with an effect like its should be included, since it turns "I'm going to attack w/ my 1/1's" hands into "I'm going to combo" hands. I only board it out when I'm going aggro.
Also, here's my board vs Doran:
on draw
-1 regal
-2 primal
-1 visionary
-2 warcaller
-1 giltleaf
+2 leatherback
+2 oversoul
+3 dauntless
on play
-2 war caller
-1 giltleaf
-3 visionary
-2 regal
+4 leatherback
+3 dauntless
+2 oversoul
Only things from sideboard I can think of offhand would be some sort of combination of Nature's Claim and Naturalize vs enchantment based decks. On top of that, they double as solid removal vs Tempered Steel.
Also the instant speed would do well vs Mythic's main win con.
I ended up not going to the ptq bc I slept terribly, and the drive, money, and time would have been a bad investment if I was going to play on so little sleep. Nevertheless, I did play a lot, and here's the deck in its most meta-tuned form:
Slimes are in the board for the Valakut decks. Primal Commands and Slimes are sufficient for ruining their game plan. And Primal Commanding into a Slime the turn they go "land-go" is back breaking.
I cut the Elvish Visionaries from maindeck. They were fairly weak, especially in comparison to the late game power and DOJ resistance Vengevine offers. Vengevine also being good against Fae and Blightning decks.
The Linvala is in the board as the best way to deal with Bant/Mythic/Naya's boarded Linvala's. An early Shaman search for Linvala can ensure that theirs will never be a threat. I like this more than playing cards like Plummet.
So here's my decklist...I don't play in any ptq's or anythin like that but I do play with friends and other people at the local shop and I usually do well
PTQ in the morning. Having some problems with wargate/valakut. Any suggestions?
Side Mark of Asylum if you don't have it already. It's a $1 card at most.

match 1 vs jund
game one he has a great start. turn 2 leach, turn 3 leach, turn 4 BBE into ramgang.
game 2 in get 2 colossus in my opener and he has no answer.
game 3 have colossus and GSS in opener but he has turn 2 double thoughtseize and I dont recover.
1-2 lose

game 1 i hit turn 3 primal command and landwalk him and find my 1 md colossus and win easily
game 2 got 2 colossus in opener and he couldnt deal them.(some good luck)
2-0 win
match 3 vs naya
game 1 god hand turn one llanowar, turn 2 heritage, arbor elf, archdruid turn 3 regal force. she blocked for a bit but eventually ran out of blockers.
game 2 had a really slow start and she had me down to 7 life with a full pumped FOD. I had 2 devoted druids on the board and top decked ezuri and comboed out.
2-0 win
match 4 vs naya
game 1 this deck game some amazing hands today and got a turn 4 G wave for 12 that dropped my combo and won.
game 2 he sided in linvala and I had no answer
game 3 same as game 2
1-2 lose

game 2 was able to landwalk him after he put doran on top with harbinger and beat face with and ezuri overrun with 4 mana dorks and an archdruid.
game 3 hit another amazing hand that delivered a turn 4 g wave for 11 that dropped 2 arch druids and ezuri. won next turn.
2-1 win
game 7 vs ww
game 1 yet another amazing hand the yielded llanowar, heritage, treespeaker and archdruid top decked ezuri on turn 4 and overran ftw.
game 2 kept a questionable hand and payed for it he won easily.
game 3 he got a little mana screwed and kept a 1 land hand after mulling to 5. I kept 3 forest ezuri llanowar and 2 devoted druid comboed out on turn 4.
2-1 win
match 8 vs hideaway
game 1 I know i keep saying how great these hand are but what would you call this. LLanowar, heritage, nettle, archdruid, ezuri, 2 forest. I won on turn 4. he said he was about to "go off" but he only had 1 hidaway land out and even if it was emrakul he could only block 1.
game 2 this game was very tightly played he had a great start and was about to win untill I top decked ezuri again with 2 archdruids, a few mana dorks and colossus out. Even after he blocked with emrakul and a primeval titan trample damage was enough to win.
2-0 win
5-3 overall
Ezuri was by far the best card in this deck. He is superman of the woods.
Several times I felt that gut response should have been plummet or at lease autumns veil.
I really hope elves get at least 1 or 2 decent options in Mirroden Besieged, but even still this is a very good deck that scared just about everyone due to how fast it was. I was only 2 good topdecks from being 7-1.
the fauna shaman/vengevine engine is too slow for elves. this deck is a speed machine why would i want to slow it down? sure vengevine makes it more resilient after DoJ or fallout, but he is not an elf and would cut down the great opening hands that I get. and the ability to win games before control decks can lock you down.

We are actually talking about two different decks with a similar shell here... One is a deck that uses the Devoted Druid + Ezuri combo, and one is a deck that uses Heritage Druid + Nettle Sentinel... The version that doesn't run Devoted Druid, has a lot less need for Ezuri, as it doesn't tend to have as much mana just floating around...
As for running the Fauna Shaman/Vengevine engine, Fauna Shaman main deck makes plenty of sense, and Vengevine is very difficult for both Faeries and Vivid Control decks to beat, so having 4 copies somewhere in your 75 is a very good idea...
For reference, here is my current list, with a sideboard, that is still a work in progress...
I am still debating Great Sable Stag vs Chameleon Colossus and even Oversoul of Dusk, the latter being very good against the red decks...
As i mentioned in an earlier post, I am a big fan of running one Burrenton Forge Tender in the main deck, as there are 12 ways of tutoring for it, and 2 more in the side is plenty, for the decks that are running Volcanic Fallout...
Qasali pridemage is a tutorable Disenchant effect...
The biggest artifact this deck has trouble with is Ethersworn Canonist, and the White Weenie deck runs it main...
The version that doesn't run Devoted Druid, has a lot less need for Ezuri, as it doesn't tend to have as much mana just floating around...
I completely disagree. There were several times that I was using ezuri without devoted druid. The combo is just bonus, its actually archdruid who is usually activating him.
I also use heritage druid, nettle sentinal quite well. Most of the time the nettle sentinal is irrelevant as long as its a 1cc elf for heritage to tap. I actually cut down the number of treespeakers because they were slowing me down. I was leveling them only about 50% of the time. most of my mana was being put into g-wave(which was amazing), regal force(also great), and ezuri. When I was activating ezuri it was usually multiple times.

Aside from boarding options, I was considering the play style of this deck. In some matchups, I find myself most inclined to hold back cards. In others, it's best to just run everything out there. What do you guys think is appropriate style vs. the various matchups?

game 2 had a really slow start and she had me down to 7 life with a full pumped FOD. I had 2 devoted druids on the board and top decked ezuri and comboed out.
2-0 win

game 7 vs ww
game 1 yet another amazing hand the yielded llanowar, heritage, treespeaker and archdruid top decked ezuri on turn 4 and overran ftw.
game 2 kept a questionable hand and payed for it he won easily.
game 3 he got a little mana screwed and kept a 1 land hand after mulling to 5.
This is the competitive thread, please go to the casual thread if this is what you are after...
5x Forest
4x Misty Rainforest
4x Verdant Catacombs
2x Razorverge Thicket
2x Sunpetal Grove
4x Primal Command
4x Heritage Druid
1x Burrenton Forge-Tender
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Nettle Sentinel
4x Regal Force
4x Ranger of Eos
4x Elvish Archdruid
1x Joraga Warcaller
4x Arbor Elf
4x Joraga Treespeaker
4x Fauna Shaman
2x Cloudthresher
2x Great Sable Stag
3x Nature's Claim
1x Obstinate Baloth
1x Qasali Pridemage
4x Vengevine
As i mentioned in an earlier post, I am a big fan of running one Burrenton Forge Tender in the main deck, as there are 12 ways of tutoring for it, and 2 more in the side is plenty, for the decks that are running Volcanic Fallout...
Qasali pridemage is a tutorable Disenchant effect...
The biggest artifact this deck has trouble with is Ethersworn Canonist, and the White Weenie deck runs it main...
