My little local store is doing a PTQ this Saturday. While I have no plans to win or even place in it, I'd like to throw together a deck to have fun and maybe ruin someone's day.
I skipped over Zendikar and the new Mirrodin block, so my card pool is a bit limited. But I bought a lot of Alara. This is probably the best deck I can put together right now:
I have all those cards except the Ondu Giants, which shouldn't be difficult to find. That's all I have of those cards, so I couldn't stick in another Primeval Titan if I wanted to. The only other cards I might stick in would be Progenitus and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn for fun. (I might sideboard Emrakul anyway -- he's very good protection against mill.)
It's the 'Other cards' that I'd like advice on. The cascade option is powerful -- every cascade ends in either a Tribute to Hunger or some form of mana ramp. But it's a bit slow. I also don't like how cascade effectively makes me draw more land by thinning the non-land cards out of my deck.
I'm wondering if I could have a stronger early game by shifting more towards WU, with these cards:
The mana base would need fiddling and might be more risky. But the WUG slant gives a lot more early defense, plus some early artifact destruction and a bit of an early threat. Other possible cards here are Rhox War Monk or Bant Charm. I just wish any of the WU ultimatums were worth playing.
Another option is to depend on the fact that I will have Domain:
That gives me a little faster mana ramping and some impressive early threats...if the mana base cooperates.
I could throw together a control option or a 'kill everything all the time' option. I have a 'planeswalkers' option with full sets of Ajani Vengeant, Elspeth, Knight Errant, and Sarkhan Vol. (I don't have any of the 'new' planeswalkers. Well, one Karn.)
I don't know what the Extended metagame is like, so I don't know what would work best.
Any ideas or suggestions? Which option do you like best? Are there any obvious cards that I should have but that I'm missing?
