Extended has just become the best format by far IMO. It's basically a healthy standard, and the ridiculous turn 3 kills are gone.
The turn 3 kills were there because they wouldn't ban things. It's their own fault for killing extended tournament attendance. I for one am done with this. Let's see how bad they screw up Legacy when they make the new format but forget that no one can use FoW anymore (if its Mercadian Masques and up)...
I think the new format is going to be ONS-MIR-CHK-RAV-CSP-TSP. Meaning Dark Depths will be worthless.
That would make no sense. Why would they gate off the new sets? Also, most of the rumors that have been popping up say that overextended will start at MM.
That would make no sense. Why would they gate off the new sets? Also, most of the rumors that have been popping up say that overextended will start at MM.
That's more of how I would like to see it ending up :S, with a sub-standard like that you'd have a nice healthy format, unlike current (or past now I guess) MTG.
Mana bases will be fine, we'll have all the cards and more from "5-color Standard". No blood moon effects in the format makes it even easier. Fae also seems weak if people really want to beat it since they just straight up lose to a stag.
On another note, last extended season was a very healthy format. Dark Depths probably put up the most results on average, but there was plenty of hate and strategies that had good matchups with depths.
I hope WOTC realizes the real reasons why people don't play extended. However, I just don't see them owning up to the fact that extended is just not a format players can get excited for- no matter what.
The card pool is hard to maintain b/c it's rotates (i.e. yearly basis) just as quickly as standard. Except there's no incentive to maintain a card pool for extended, because Extended is not supported on a local level with weekly tournaments like standard. You never get to use the cards, so what's the point? Why even try, when WOTC is going to blow-up formats every year anyways? It's really just better for players if they can see stuff coming instead of having the format change 2 times in a 2 year span.
Pricey staples that rotate away will make player happy until they realize that they'll just be replaced by other pricey staples. One player is happy he doesn't have to buy Dark Depths, another player will whine about having just invested in his playset of DD.
Cards will always cost money. Whether or not Magic is competitive and fun is way more important. Just let players know what's going on. Use the B&R list judiciously (which I believe that did, this time). Make competitive Magic more accessible instead of changing a formats' rules each year. And just dump Extended, it can't compete against Legacy and Standard and never will. If you want to really shake things up, just create a new Eternal format that bridges the gap between the current Extended format and Legacy- that's what a lot of tournament players want. It'll have been a long time coming.
Is it just me or does no one like what they are doing to magic?*sarcasm* This is so funny to watch all of our favorite hobby drown in a sea of hating WotC.
The Rumored format "overextended" doesn't seem to be coming. It was "spoiled" months ago and they are either using this as a reason so play it or they just wont make that format. WotC only cares about primary market which is not the players which is why they are doing this because they have no idea what we like and don't like.

Awesome, so Extended is now Type 2 redux. Can we get that rumored Masques+ eternal format now, wizards?
This. I was against the whole Extended+, but at this point it is the only option.
I've accepted a push for mid-range decks in Standard, accepted Mythic rarities, accepted the no fix supply of original duals.
But now someone, either Hasbro or Wizards is straight up forcing their idea of how Magic should be played down our throats. Instead of having interactions start one turn 1 or 2 with cards like Mogg Fanatic, Mana Leak, Rite of Flame, etc.; they want us to start relying more heavily on 4-5 casting cost spells.
Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
Doesn't Tom LaPille remember the extended format he played in (before he got hired by WOTC) where he got a GP Top 16 playing Tribal-Zoo? You could have played anything that season (Goblins, Top, Ideals, TEPS, Zoo, Death Cloud, Gifts-Tron, Doran, Dredge, Affinity, Loam). Tom LaPille, please bridge the gap between Legacy and current extended.

This game blows now and it's so funny to see that WotC has no idea what they are doing. and to answer the question of relying on heavily casted cards. look at T2... they have yet to print a card that will move into Legacy as a staple. It doesn't have to be tarmogoyf or something. But a nice card for legacy. They are printing creature heavy light spell and decreased spell power cards. Like all they have to do for me to play T2 is print counterspell or cryptic command and I'm in. Until then. NOPE. And they just continue to make extended the worst format ever. It has like two tournaments a year it's so useless they should just dump it all together.

It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
I am fairly new to extended, but have enjoyed it atleast as much as standard so far. But I do play standard normally, this changes allows me and the numerous people who only pick up extended stuff twice a year to only have to go back a couple blocks to get relevant cards, it means cards like shock lands, which are only played in extended and are still $10, arent needed. Yes, certain staples will still be expensive, but these staples will see play in other formats, like standard and legacy, and will be easier (atleast for me) to justify getting. Althought i understand the anger many long-time extended players must feel, this situation does open the way for an extended+/superextended type format. So hopefully all the extended staples won't just become useless (WoTC failing to do that much is where i call shenanigans). Hopefully this change will breath some fresh-air into a fairly unplayed format, even if the format is vastly different. To the people calling it Lorwyn T2, just remember lorwyn won't be in forever. and to people saying WoTC is slowing magic down, i see it, i dont like it, and i hope Scars provides something to balance with lorwyn, or even add to legacy... atleast something more interesting than Bloodbraid Elf into something stupid...

It literally is just type 2 with better card slots. We're mad because all of the synergy and interactions between cards have been removed in favor of the creatures+removal style that standard decks are based around. in all honesty, with so few sets legal and the lack of innovation the most recent standard sets have allowed for (all the cards are pretty much straight forward) all you're going to see is a bunch of type 2 decks with better cards in certain slots and old type 2 decks that are using newer cards. that's pretty much it. there's nothing to differentiate this from other standards.
remember when martyr proc was standard legal? or dragonstorm? or wildfirevore? or even CBtop for like 2 months? those were the old days, now it's all about creatures and killing those creatures. wizards has said it themselves, and now they've turned extended into standard 2.0.
that's why we're mad; they're forcing the modern interpretatin of standard-esque play on us.
It's an easily abuse-able combo, really. If you can get Spirit guides with a land cascading into hypergenesis, with akroma's memorial and a couple of creatures, you just won. It's not as widely played, but is very easy to break.
Perhaps it wasn't format warping, but with the rotation of three blocks, Hypergenesis would be one of the few remaining decks, and would probably be propelled to one of the dominant decks.
Two words for you = Hypergenesis, Eldrazi. Hence the ban.

@Jokulmorder: I agree that they are making extended a second standard which is a midrange type format, and it is probably because I'm new to extended that I'm less bothered. But I do think this sets them up for a new extended+ format, which if rumors are true is something i'd be fairly interested in.
Anywho, this event has lead me to take more interest in Legacy.... although i defiantly preferred the idea or $10 shocks over like $25+ old duals...
Even though my faith in larger gaming companies is almost never returned, i do hope for wizards to do something to balance this out...

Yeah, this is what I'm feeling at the moment. People complained they hated Extended, but I loved it. All those awesome cards I didn't get a chance to play with in standard (Putrefy, Mortify, The Rack), but now I don't get to play with them in Extended.
It was a good format, full of fun cards and interactions, and allowed players to dip into their pile of old cards that don't cut the mustard in Legacy.
