Okay, I know Tom LaPille states "Modern is not intended to permanently replace any existing format" but with them replacing them all premier Extended events with Modern, and considering how little Extended was played outside those premiere events, Extended has de facto died.
If they really wanted to kill dredge, they should've killed Bridge From Below, not Troll + dread return. Sloppy, but nobody will miss them anyway unless you're a dredge player.
Without printing a host of powerful disruption they need a large banned list, or rounds will compose of everyone goldfishing. Banning misstep was surprising, though. You still have Thirst for Knowledge as good draw, but without arti lands + top, not sure how they'll enable it.
I don't really care one way or the other since it isn't a format I play, but I must say as an outsider to the format that Extended has a ridiculously bad reputation, at least here in the Pittsburgh area - the way it's always described is as very un-fun.
"Last season's and the season prior's Standard boogeyman decks with 12-post and Zoo."
There are supposedly 40 Grand Prix next year. You really believe none of them will be extended?
If anything, whenever they expand back to 4 Pro Tours yearly, they have another season of PTQ's. Block/Standard/Modern/Sealed/Extended are the only choices for PTQ since Draft/Legacy/Vintage are not really feasible. It's very possible that Extended gets a season.
More so than price, b/c Legacy cards weren't always expensive, people want to use their cards. The competitive threshold for MTG cards got so high in Legacy that many cards got unused. You don't see the same thing happening in Modern?

No, the whole POINT of modern being, that there's no reserve list to worry about. We'll have to see how Wizards plans to make good on this though, I don't think FTVs and casual summer will be enough to meet the initial demand for reprints.
It's a shame that Extended is hurting from this, but us over at Modern are pissed too. Moreso than you guys actually; the Banned list is just stupid (But that's not the point).
Anyway, good luck with keeping the format afloat. It's been rocky for a while, full of warped formats (like Standard)
Well as far as mtgo is concerned, it seems no one play extended anymore. I wish they didn't ban Jace though in modern. Seems like I never get to play him.
Even if ext doesn't totally die from this, there's the strong hint that Jace TMS and Stoneforge will be banned in Extended as well. Look at what Tom says about ext testing. If Wizards already knows about the problem of these two cards, and they're too strong for Modern, then they're banned in Ext.
So, now your Jace TMS and Stoneforge are only good in Legacy and Vintage.
They banned every viable deck in the format except for 12post and Zoo.
No, they banned every viable non-combo deck. Every deck that I see seems to have some combo built in that you can't deal with. Melira + Finks? Storm? Emrakul + Eye? Hopefully we get some powerful reprints, and soon.

Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
Extended isn't dead, however much that would please me.
Extended is however going to have to undergo some serious changes for anyone to give a damn about the format again. Namely, bringing the Banhammer down on JTMS and SFM would make the format at least slightly more diverse-and honestly, like any of you would decry this change if it happened?
I most certainly wouldn't.
Even if that happens though, the alleged diversity of modern (I say "alleged" because we've yet to actually discover if the format is going to be stagnant or not) will swallow Ext whole. People are getting to replay their favorite decks again, which is far more exciting than merely playing with last year's toys. I'm not sure what, if anything, could keep Ext on it's already waning life support much longer. If player support started magically pouring out of the sky in favor of Ext, that might work.
I don't believe in miracles, however.

Zoo isn't a combo deck, and neither is 5CC. Both seem pretty viable right now. I don't think 5CC will really compete till the format has solidified, because you can tailor it to the meta.
Hopefully Modern gets some damn support round my local area, because it sure as hell would be nice to play something other then Draft/Standard each week

Of course Zoo is a combo deck, it plays one of the best combos in the format! Wild Nacatl+Stomping Ground

Huh? StarCity has him at $69.99, which is $10 more than the last time I looked (a couple weeks after his standard ban).
Even with an extended ban, I think he would retain much of his value based on his notoriety alone at this point (like many cards on the vintage banned/restricted lists).

EDIT: ...Which is ironic considering the only card to stop it on turn 0 is.
Aether Vial is fine in Modern, keeps the format healthy. Emrakul or Cloudpost are probably looking at bans though.

No, it would only die if wizards would stop giving extended support.
Wait. They replaced extended with modern in Philly? Well jeez...
