I'm just glad I didn't pick up that playset yesterday.
Me and Evin Erwin were actually talking about this at the PTQ yesterday, and we both agreed that it should have been banned. The card is rediculous for conrol. Honestly, I would much rather have Top in a control mirror that jitte in an aggro mirror.
Well aggro Combo wins. Time to go buy a set of ravagers Minds Desire.
Personally, I think this is the card that was holding TEPS back (mostly CB, but this set that card up). The deck is now offically tier 1 in PR Extended.
I guess I'm going to re-joice about this now. Top is good, but quite quite good post-rotation, the way that testing has been. Good call wizards.
Well, I guess testing without Alara in Extended isn't a fair evaluation, but still. If it does things on a grand scale without Alara in Extended, it's still pretty damn good. Again, good call.
Without a fast control deck (which would probably require CounterTop), I think Affinity is going to be a big house come Extended, but the news headers will be meta decks that destroy Affinity. Maybe maindeck Ancient Grudge *shudder*.
Maybe that's the point. Given the choice between two combo pieces, the obvious choice is to ban the more powerful one. Top was pretty strong in pretty much any deck with fetchlands, even Rock played a few copies.
This sucks. I was about to build a new version of Trinket Angels and they came up with this stunner.
It isn't that broken. It takes at least 2 turns, but usually 3, to set it up functionally. But I guess the idea of unlimited free counterspells just didn't sit well with the playtesting team at Wizards.

This is probably it. I'm under the impression they decided it was 'unfun', i.e. sometimes it's impossible to get out of the lock, and then you feel gypped because you lost to a two-card combo. Also, it takes up a lot of time =S
The reason I see this is that
1.) It shortens game time. Topping every turn takes time, and takes away from the game. You can agree or disagree with me, but the fact is you can stall games with top.
2.) Counterbalance is dumb with top. It's actually better than Jitte in every situation.
3.) Every control deck was running it. As we have seen in the past, cards that every deck runs usually get banned. (I'm looking at you Skull Clamp.)
Those are the reasons I can think of off the top of my head.
Tooth hasn't been a contender for a very long time. This deck isn't even on their radar. This decision is probably 85% because of Next Level Blue and 15% because of how absurdly powerful Top's effect is for virtually no investment.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like I've been kicked in the nuts.

Not necessarily. The first big deck will be Affinity, yes, but the next will be the one that smashes aggro decks.
