A loooong time ago I did some research for a friend's podcast. He was asking his listeners for help in finding music to play, but as a internet radio show, there is only certain stuff you can air of course.
The answer he told me was "creative commons." Well, if you are not familiar with this (I wasn't really) you can read all you want at https://creativecommons.org/about but in short, it's a copyright license standard that often gives you, yes - you, legal freedom to download, share, play on podcasts, remix, etc. (Check each song for rights given to you.)
Back to the story, I was given a little column on my friend's show to pick out one track by one band each week to play on air. It's been a fun little experience for me, and it's been broadening my horizons a little. Plus, the listeners seem to enjoy my picks - and these artists can always use the attention.
So, I will share my picks with you weekly here. Feel free to comment, share your creative commons artists / picks, download legal indie music, what have you. I'll update this weekly in the original post and further posts and maybe throw a link in my sig.
Finally, though the music is free, many of these artists have donate buttons, contact info, some play tours, etc. If you really like them, tell them, maybe kick back a couple bucks. Keep the music flowing.
WWP #1: "Zombie Baby" by Sekshun 8
This band hits all the notes for great metal. Obvious influences can be heard such as Metallica, Alice in Chains, and Godsmack. "Black Wing Butterfly" is equally good. "Hooked" slows it down, but is very memorable. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/48396
WWP #2: "Summoner of the Wind" by Obsidian Shell
Sticking with the metal theme, this band really takes "symphonic metal" to an art form, all led by a singer with the voice of an angel. It's almost a bit to electronic / techno for my taste (almost in spots) but overall, I enjoyed the album. If you like epic sounding music, you should find something to like. My faves are "Summoner" and "Endsequence." http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/76571
WWP #3: "Graveyard" by The Liquid Kitchen
This band has indie, metal, and hard rock vibes. If you like Neil Young, you'll like the vocalist. The album spans some variety, from metal-ish of "Graveyard," to the more altrock-feel of "Mexico" to the slow and depressing "Bleed." Like them? They are touring in Texas, are working on a new album, and are active on Facebook. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/39522
WWP #4: "She" by Tenpenny Joke
I'll admit, it starts with a "style" that you'll be thinking what the heck did I pull this week, but it soon kicks into hard. Sounds even better if you have some earphones nearby. Finishes nicely. The whole album is great, but hey... gotta pick one. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/382479
WWP #5: "Cold Gold Fields" by Braker Lane
Aight, let's change gears a bit. A fan of the show of this featurette told me he liked country. I'm not a huge fan (especially "twangy" country) but tempering it with alt or rock, I was curious if I would like what I found. I did. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/514571
WWP #6: "Dropping out of School" by Brad Sucks
"Brad Sucks" is a lie. They certainly do not, in my opinion, and maybe you'll feel the same way about this indie, sort of electronic album. The whole album is great ("Sudden Death" is a good one) but like I say, gotta pick one. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/210907
WWP #7: "War of Attrition" by Hot Fiction
I waffled on this one for a while. Maybe I listened to the album too much and the feel of it got less interesting. But, this album has a nice, raw guitar and vocal feel to it that initially drew me to it. Bluesy rock, methinks. Check out "If I had a girl" in the same album when you get a chance. I about went with that one. If you like this band, look them up. I get Facebook notifications that they are touring parts of the US. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/618819
WWP #8: "Best Days of my Life" by the Kyoto Connection
Gonna lay something a little different on you this week. I have a guilty pleasure of 80's pop. Fell in love with this album as it channeled some 80s vibes, somewhat reminiscent of Duran Duran or Pet Shop Boys. You might dig it, might not. If you do like it, try the whole album. "Marks" and "Take on Me" are great, but I enjoyed all of it. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/70204
WWP#9: "Shelter between Sky and Ground" by Green Turning Light
Getting back to the musical roots of WWP. I'm not 100% sure how to classify this, but if you like hard rock, metal, or grunge, maybe you will find something you will like here in this album (pick was track 6) http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Sound_Of_Ground/Green_Turning_Light/
WWP#10: "Swagg's & Ellilot" (track 1) by Mt. Carmel:
Oh well, the 80's style pick was a fun one, so let's go back further. This local band (to me, of course) has a nice 70's guitar-lick feel and has a band member that shares a name with someone from I went to high school with? <shrug> Not that you would care about that, but if you like 70s rock, you might care about this pick. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/mount_carmel
WWP#11: "Give it Up (Start Again)" by Snowflake, ft. Subliminal
Found a new source of Creative Commons music to drop on you. ccMixter.org sounds like it's pretty well known in the remixing community, and the benefits of CC should be obvious. Download loops, tracks, bits, pieces, lyrics, a cappellas, or supply any of the above, and the fun begins. When an artist finishes a piece, they upload it back giving credit to the sources, and then one can track lyrics and pieces and get feedback. It's rather fascinating. The search in the upper right is really powerful, you can put in genres, themes, or tags, and browse nicely. I do find that the best remixes in my opinion are the ones that don't sound like remixes, for example, the vocals really fit the instrumental, and not Vocal track A + Instrumental B + C, etc. So, any picks I suggest will attempt to match this criteria.
This week's pick is an artist that is quite popular for her voice work on CCmixter. It's a bit more downtempo than what I usually suggest, but the vocals are sublime, the lyrics thoughtful, and it's catchy as all get out. http://ccmixter.org/files/snowflake/31629
WWP#12: "Special" by Sleeperspaceborn
Let's mix it up a bit. This genre isn't my normal habitat, but I happened upon it, so let's give it a try. It's a nicely done piece of what I'd call R&B / hip-hop, with some electronic essence. Groovy. http://ccmixter.org/files/sleeperspaceborn/32696
WWP#13: "Liberty Road" by Geert Veneklaas featuring Loveshadow
This week I have something "special" with a lot of soul, and no, it's not last week's pick, nor is it soul music. For those that dig 80s synth or Depeche Mode, this is up the same alley. This one speaks to me, and maybe it will speak to you? http://ccmixter.org/files/geertveneklaas/32670
WWP#14: "Thought to Thing" by Kellee Maize on "Aligned Archetype"
I've got an artist that I think will divide some lines. Overall, her style is what I would call alt-hiphop, with definite electronic, trance, and (what I find from my research) dubstep, influences. On one half, people might say she has good messages, unique sound, and hits the rare female rap spot; on the other I figure people will judge her as a hippie, cliche, feminist.
I am in the former, of course.
I urge you to listen to the whole album. With headphones. It's really good. It is indeed Creative Commons and you can see that on her webpage. http://kelleemaize.com/
WWP#15: "Hard Moon" by MDP
This tune has been on my mp3 player for a couple of months, and I love it when it comes on rotation. I hope you all aren't tired of the 80's style stuff I post, but this one channels it as well. It reminds me of Depeche Mode, The Eurythmics, or Peter Gabriel, or maybe something else, I'm not quite sure. http://ccmixter.org/files/MDP/32614
WWP#16: "About Walls" (track #3) by The Jabberheads
This group / album might be too "eclectic" as you can see from the tags, but let's try it anyway. Half the album is a little loose for my tastes, but I dug this song. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/86837
WWP#17: "We All Fall Down" by Lorenzo's Music
Troll lol lol... I was browsing for a certain genre but got off course, but did find this band. It's another reset and "back to WWP roots" with this indie rock band, but it does seem to have a bit of bluesy (or electronic or maybe garage rock?) flair. Reminds me of Franz Ferdinand for some reason. The whole album is nice so listen to it when you get some time, but for the show I picked this one. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Lorenzos_Music/Just_Had_To_Let_You_Know/Lorenzos_Music_-_Just_Had_To_Let_You_Know_-_03_We_All_Fall_Down
WWP#18: "Belmont Jail Song" (track #2) by Crete Boom
Dunno what to play this week... how about some 70s country blues rock? Something a little different. It's got a bit of quietness near the end with a little flourish to cut the track, so let it play all the way through. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Crete_Boom/Honest_Lovers/
WWP#19: __________ by Zep Hurme
I couldn't resist passing this song. This piece with the strange title and even stranger lyrics really has a catchy beat and a lot of honestly and humor in it. Can't spoil the title, but listen here: http://ccmixter.org/files/zep_hurme/33313
WWP#20: "Now Get Busy" by the Beastie Boys
Surprise! Got a pick from an artist that people have actually heard of before. The Beastie Boys.
Yes, they licensed this song as Creative Commons.
Yes, next week I'll be back to picking out independent artists.
Yes, it's a little different than what I normally pick out.
Now get busy. http://ccmixter.org/files/wired/86
WWP#21: "Matter of Time" by Succumb2 the Night featuring Shannon Hurley
Again, "something a little different" this time, this one falls into what I would call modern pop, a genre I don't really get into much as much of it is commercial crap! Might like it, might not, but it'll itch a genre I don't think I've gave you yet.
Shannon stormed Myspace and is now on XM and indie stations, and does a lot of CC work. You can catch a little article about her here: http://ccmixter.org/shannon-hurley
WWP#22: "Dinner for One" (track #1) by Amity in Fame
Scour, scour, scouring the internets.... Let's play.... this one! The title... is just like my life in about 15 mins, gonna hit you with this pick. The rest of the album has some misses, but overall is worthwhile of a listen. Check it out when you get some time. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/28245
WWP#23: "Gambling Woman" (track #1) Freeky Cleen and Dickey F
Haven't had some of... this in a while so... let's just play up cliched stereotypes for fun. Maybe you will like this bluesy, southern-style, toe-tappin, guitar rock here with the Freek and the Dick. http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/92288
WWP#25: "Making Me Nervous" by Brad Sucks
I reviewed all picks and artists so far, and at least one stands out again. I did a track from his second album before, but let's go back one album to "Making Me Nervous" a rather stellar piece of techno-electronic from Brad Sucks. This album is as solid as the other; give it a listen when you get a chance. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/30058
WWP#26: "I Wonder if God Was Sleeping" by scottaltham featuring Loveshadow
Have we played any trance yet? No? Bust out the glow sticks to this piece. http://ccmixter.org/files/scottaltham/18129
WWP#27: "Hobo Timberman" by Timberman featuring Ronan Tyrrell
I can not say I know what genre to place this song in, maybe some jazz / chill fusion, but it's a treat. http://ccmixter.org/files/Per/34327
Hiya Zeld. Yeah, It's been going well. I guess I didn't state this, but I've actually been doing the feature for about 12 weeks, and the host and the audience have been appreciative. Plus, the host plays my picks "blind" on-air, so it's a fun surprise for everybody as well as raising awareness to these bands and CC.
Week two of the feature was...
WWP #2: "Summoner of the Wind" by Obsidian Shell
Sticking with the metal theme, this band really takes "symphonic metal" to an art form, all led by a singer with the voice of an angel. It's almost a bit too electronic / techno for my taste (almost in spots) but overall, I enjoyed the album. If you like epic sounding music, you should find something to like. My faves are "Summoner" and "Endsequence." http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/76571
(BTW, not a metal person? Don't worry, I cover many genres.)
Week three was...
You don't need me. The links I gave for each song take you to the album and you can download the track for podcast play; just highlight the song and look for the down arrow, or you can download the whole album in one swoop instead.
Don't forget to give credit to the artist!
What is your podcast about, and where can I listen to it?
WWP #4: "She" by Tenpenny Joke

What a bizarre opening! I don't think I've ever heard Latin influences in Metal(?) before.
Not that I mind it, as a former Steel Drums player, the Latin "sound" is like Green Chile or Dry heat-reminds me of home.
Jon: I don't mind submitting tracks (if it's easy and quick), but a brief perusal of your site yields me with no idea how. The show I do this mini-feature is linked to in my first post if you want to promote.
Ambush on all Sides is awesome. I'll def. get that album and am looking forward to your future updates.
Glad to have a fan of the thread and moreso glad to have introduced you to new music!
Ah, just to clear, I'm not advertising for Jamendo. In the early weeks of the feature, it was the only CC source I had discovered. I have other sources in the coming weeks.
How was your week?
WWP #7: "War of Attrition" by Hot Fiction
I waffled on this one for a while. Maybe I listened to the album too much and the feel of it got less interesting. But, this album has a nice, raw guitar and vocal feel to it that initially drew me to it. Bluesy rock, methinks. Check out "If I had a girl" in the same album when you get a chance. I about went with that one. If you like this band, look them up. I get Facebook notifications that they are touring parts of the US. http://www.jamendo.com/en/track/618819
On a side note, I like thrift stores. I went to one I haven't gone to before and got a good condition used Xbox 1 copy of Knights of the Old Republic 2 for $6 (sells typically around $25 I think) and a new (buyout) nice condition, padded straps and handles, multi pocket duffle bag that I use for two 2 row card boxes of my casual Magic decks. Oh, and a GTA San Andreas game guide for a quarter. A decent haul this week.
WWP#8: "Best Days of my Life" by the Kyoto Connection
Gonna lay something a little different on you this week. I have a guilty pleasure of 80's pop. Fell in love with this album as it channeled some 80s vibes, somewhat reminiscent of Duran Duran or Pet Shop Boys. You might dig it, might not. If you do like it, try the whole album. Well, that was an eventful week or so for the USA, at least. Presidential "job plan," 9/11 remembrance, massive flooding in the northeast, massive wildfires in Texas....
Not much to chat about this week, though this week's game night had our extended group playing "Nuns on the Run" (complicated to understand at first, but ultimately fun; similar to "Scotland Yard" I've been told) and Zombie Fluxx (first Fluxx by me, ended up a little long and too random for my tastes).
WWP#10: "Swagg's & Ellilot" (track 1) by Mt. Carmel:
Oh well, the 80's style pick was a fun one, so let's go back further. Blutsau: Glad I have one regular fan here. Shrug? I aim for a wide variety of music here, so it's normal that one would like one or two tracks; I'm the weird guy that likes all these.
Thanks for stopping by and please keep on listening!

WWP#16: "About Walls" (track #3) by The Jabberheads
This group / album might be too "eclectic" as you can see from the tags, but let's try it anyway. Half the album is a little loose for my tastes, but I dug this song.

WWP#18: "Belmont Jail Song" (track #2) by Crete Boom
Dunno what to play this week... how about some 70s country blues rock? Something a little different. It's got a bit of quietness near the end with a little flourish to cut the track, so let it play all the way through.

WWP#19: __________ by Zep Hurme
I couldn't resist passing this song. This piece with the strange title and even stranger lyrics really has a catchy beat and a lot of honestly and humor in it. Can't spoil the title, but listen here:

WWP#20: "Now Get Busy" by the Beastie Boys
Surprise! Got a pick from an artist that people have actually heard of before. The Beastie Boys.
Yes, they licensed this song as Creative Commons.
Yes, next week I'll be back to picking out independent artists.
Yes, it's a little different than what I normally pick out.
Now get busy.

WWP#24: "Perfect Mean" (track 1) by Kursed
Anyway... we've had 70's, 80's... how about some grungy 90's?
http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/96921
WWP#25: "Making Me Nervous" by Brad Sucks
I reviewed all picks and artists so far, and at least one stands out again. I did a track from his second album before, but let's go back one album to "Making Me Nervous" a rather stellar piece of techno-electronic from Brad Sucks. This album is as solid as the other; give it a listen when you get a chance.

My faves are "Summoner" and "Endsequence."

Week three was...

You don't need me. The links I gave for each song take you to the album and you can download the track for podcast play; just highlight the song and look for the down arrow, or you can download the whole album in one swoop instead.
Don't forget to give credit to the artist!

"Brad Sucks" is a lie. They certainly do not, in my opinion, and maybe you'll feel the same way about this indie, sort of electronic album. The whole album is great ("Sudden Death" is a good one) but like I say, gotta pick one.

"Marks" and "Take on Me" are great, but I enjoyed all of it.

Let's mix it up a bit. This genre isn't my normal habitat, but I happened upon it, so let's give it a try. It's a nicely done piece of what I'd call R&B / hip-hop, with some electronic essence. Groovy.

This week I have something "special" with a lot of soul, and no, it's not last week's pick, nor is it soul music. For those that dig 80s synth or Depeche Mode, this is up the same alley. This one speaks to me, and maybe it will speak to you?

I've got an artist that I think will divide some lines. Overall, her style is what I would call alt-hiphop, with definite electronic, trance, and (what I find from my research) dubstep, influences. On one half, people might say she has good messages, unique sound, and hits the rare female rap spot; on the other I figure people will judge her as a hippie, cliche, feminist.
I am in the former, of course.
