Janelle Monae, a young woman with dark skin and a pompadour-style hairdo. She is wearing a formal white shirt and black bow. There is a jacket slung over her shoulder, also black. The picture is in greyscale
Anyone heard of her? She just released her first full-length album, The Archandroid, but she had an EP a couple of years ago. Generically, her music's pretty broad--funk, R&B, hip-hop, electropop, folk-pop, and at least two pieces using a full orchestra. Thematically, she's sort of Afro-futurist--like if Octavia Butler had written music instead of novels.
And she has buckets of talent. Check out the music videos for Many Moons, Tightrope, and Cold War. You won't be disappointed.
So, anyone else know/love her? Or am I the only one here?
She was playing in Buffalo in September--which is about five hours from where I live by bus. If I had had any money at that point, I would have gone down there. Sadly, I did not.
A friend is seeing her when she goes to Utah. And my dad's partner saw her this past winter when she was opening for Erykah Badu in NYC. I am passionately envious.
Janelle Monae is amazing. [I'm not really sure what else to say about her. I love all her songs? I'm waiting eagerly for part 4 of her set of suites? Many Moons' video is so cool it's as though it's part of a movie? ...]

The ArchAndroid is still my favorite album this year... and I'm more of an indie rock guy than the hip hop/pop thing. Her constant experimentation and dabbling in tons of styles reminds me a bit of Bjork's awesome mid-90s output, plus she has a great voice obv.
