I'm a fan of both the original Japanese Iron Chef show and the Food Network spin-off Iron Chef: America.
One thing that always get me: Why do so many chefs keep trying to turn their theme ingredient into an ice cream flavor?
First, I understand that, as a 5-course cooking battle, many of them aim to end the meal with a desert or two- but making bacon flavored ice cream is just weird. Maybe my palate isn't sophisticated or open enough, but the taste of certain ingredients really places them within the "savory" category rather than the "sweet" and vice-versa.
I once saw a cooking show/reality TV contest with chef Jamie Oliver and one of his contestants made ham ice cream. The child that got it instantly said "Yuck!"
Second, Alton Brown started calling the the stadium's machine the "Ice Cream Maker of Doom" early in the series since many attempts to make an ice cream dish are often unsuccessful within the 1 hour time limit. Often, the ice cream doesn't solidify quick enough to count by the end of the cooking.
So, I gotta ask: why do chefs competing on the show insist on makin ice cream when a) the theme ingredient doesn't match, and b) they're not likely to succeed within the time limit?
I admit that some chefs have done really well making ice cream on the show. But isn't it too much of a risk (strategically) and a stretch (taste)?
I usually shake my head when I see someone head for the ice cream maker, I guess it's a high risk/high reward situation, if it somehow turns out they'll probably get huge points from the judges.
I have a feeling that Michael Symon would make bacon ice cream every chance he gets if it weren't for the epic fail tendencies of ice cream.

Boba Fett is B.A. Baracus and Walker, Texas Ranger all rolled into one. But evil.
Because the allure is strong, they will always attempt it. You'll never have a better chance to explore an idea than on that show. In some places avocado is a savory only, something to be served with salty chips, while in others it's a sweet only, and avocado ice cream makes all the sense in the world. And frankly, I don't see anything inherently wrong with ham or bacon ice creams. It'd take care, it'd need the right accompaniment, but it could be good.
As for it not working, I think that's generally going to be the recipe; just cut some sugar and it'd freeze better. That, and they ought to go for sorbet.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
It's because of the original Iron Chef show. It's just a big inside joke with viewers.
In battle Cod, the French Iron Chef, Hiroyuki Sakai made a cod roe (basically fish egg) ice cream. Ever since then ice cream has been joked about every show.

Damn, you beat me to it. I was just going to refer to an episode of the original Iron Chef where one of the chef's makes fish ice cream. And let me tell you, it did not stop there. They made all crazy kinds of ice cream on that show. If you think Iron Chef USA is bad for that, start watching the original (which is 10x better, I almost refuse to watch the USA version because it's so bad).
Hiroyuki Sakai ftw, my favorite Iron Chef, the King of Kings.

Rokusaburo Michiba. That dude was straight-up awesome. Who writes their menu for sure prior to cooking?
Anyway, I prefer the original since the dubbing is decently spot-on. The ice cream joke is excellent, albeit I've never watched Cod Roe Battle yet. ._. I'll have to wait for it to turn up on FLN and be home on that day.
If only that card spelt 'Homard' right I would be throughly impressed ^^
Yeah, that was a bone of contention when I originally posted the card at MT - I took the spelling from the Japanese オマール - which is Omar, unfortunately. I hadn't seen the original Homard Battle, + having only heard them saying the name, all I had to go on were the Japanese fansites I found at the time -__-/

I think that's the "Fear Factor" portion of the show.

[GTC] Gatecrash Patch for MWS (249/249)
Not only did he have the best record, the cod roe ice cream was actually praised by the judges.
Now that's an Iron Chef.
I haven't even seen the American version, but if they're carrying on the ice cream tradition, it can't be as bad as I've read.
but after eating at morimotos restaurant and the goin to see him live and eat some of the dishes he made im kind of leaning towards morimoto now
the old version is alot better in my opinion

That's the thing. Morimoto is probably the best chef left on the show (Batalli is a close second), and Sakai was that much better than him.
I wish I could eat Sakai's cooking. Especially since French food is probably (overall) the best style of food.
