I've been out alot and so haven't really played. Every time I log in some error occurs and so I've grown frustrated. Sadly I've spent more time in WoW during the last few days than GW2. Patch 5.04 is out and the new spec system needed to be tested on my Rogue(free poison is amazing!) and Paladin(my heals suck for Ret now but I'm a Draenai so I have Gift of the Naaru to compensate). Anyway, I love my Ele so far and look forward to doing things with my guild.
The trader came up for about 5 minutes today. I blew through a gold just buying crafting resources. I managed to get myself up to tier 3 (steel) which is level 45 gear. I'm about to cross over to tier 4 (platinum) and make level 55 gear. That should be a blast.

So how does the whole Hall of Monuments tie in? Is it worth all the gw 1 grinding to get more items, or is it just a waste of time?
I'm still trying to figure this out as well.
I've been unable to validate my email so far, and from what I understand this is happening to a lot of people. he link in the verification email always says that is is expired or invalid, and I believe you have to verify your email before you can gain access to the HoM rewards, but I'm not entirely sure.
All I do know is that I have all of the rewards from HoM and have yet to see any of them.
Anyways, my experience is pretty mixed so far. I was a little worried by the open world map system at first, mainly because it was a step towards looking like every other MMO out there, but it really helps the game feel more communal. There are so many tasks that would be impossible to complete by yourself but there is always several people right there doing it with you in an unspoken cooperation.
Being able to cast while you are moving in fantastic, and I really love what evading has added to the depth of combat.
In GW1, swapping weapon sets in combat was something anyone would rarely do unless you were running a very specific build. In GW2 it's almost a necessity to have a second weapon set ready, and swap back and forth constantly.
Their promise that all classes will be self supportable and there will be no need for a central healing class is holding up as well. I'm playing a necro right now and the death shroud ability is amazing. It just feels so great to spam a bunch of AoE spells and weakening curses, then run straight into a mob, activate the shroud and drain everythings life away.

If you haven't leveled yourself in the hall of monuments don't bother at this point. How it works is every weapon/armor you can get there operates like a transmutation stone. It gives you a stackable item that you can use to apply the skin to another item. Minipets are unique and actual pets are old school reskins for other animals.
By far, the heritage armor is probably my favorite part. It lets you look like a decently geared person while you level. The Fiery Dragon Sword was pretty nice but the flame effect gets pretty annoying after a while.

You get a hall of monuments stone in your mail once you verify your account (you can verify on the website), and if that fails you can always visit a karma merchant at Lion's Arch and get one for free.

Not everything is castible while moving. It's a balance pass between what needs to be rooted and what can be cast while moving. For example, the guardian has a 5 person full heal (20k+ points) on his tome of courage elite. It takes 5 seconds to go off and roots you in place, which makes it hard to use right. If you use it too early you waste the team heal and if you use it too late you get downed before you can activate it (or interrupted)

YMMV. When bosses have a field day twoshotting everyone there really is no 'self supportable' class. There's a boss in Twilight Arbor that I really hope gets nerfed soon. He has a teamwide aoe that poisons and hits for nearly 80% of every players life. Oh, and did I mention that he spams it and spawns poison spider minions? It was not fun.
Btw, Mace/Focus + Sword/Shield guardian has so much survivability against bosses. Mace/Focus has 4 blocks and a Blind and Sword/Shield has a blind and a ranged block. Combine that with an aegis effect and Shelter and it's really hard for you to get bursted down quickly. When it's all used just back off for the cooldowns to come back or you'll get twoshotted

I am also playing a necro and I am totally with you on the death shroud mechanic. I always feel like a death eater with the black cloak around me when I pop it and the ability to jump to enemies as you go is simply awesome.
Now I am only level 7 so I am still in the earliest zone but I just have one problem so far, I like the cut scenes a fair amount but in my head my necromancer was a bit of a villain. I mean he wears a skull on his face, was raised in the streets and was born under the sign of the god of death and he seems so damn cheery in cut scenes. So then when I hear him talking about his desires to help people and stuff it can at times kill immersion for me. But that is a bit minor compared to the enjoyment I have had so far with the game.
Anyone running around on Yak's Bend? I'm level 27 and bored. Wouldn't mind running around and meeting up with new people.
I was a huge fan of GW1, lv 50 HoM and all. Was a total GvG nut at it's height. Not loving this game so far, it seems to cater to generic MMO fans more than fans of the first game. I don't mind change, but when you actually strip EVERYTHING about the first one and make a completely unrelated engine and the only references to the past game are just names of places and things... it's kind of dismaying.
I won't bother going into a diatribe about it though, i think I am a minority. I wouldn't have minded GW1 all over again with updated graphics and larger/more elaborate instances.
But I will give this one time to develop and see how it looks down the road. The PvP for me is very clunky in this game, but i admittedly am just plain not used to it yet.
So far this just seems like another generic MMO (pve-wise) with prettier art direction.
I'll keep playing, though probably not nightly and see how the higher end PvE things work out for me. Dual FDS ftw

This. All of this.
They have definitely taken a big step away from what a lot of people were expecting. The open world map ad free instances is just one of the many things that in my opinion has turned it somewhat from feeling like Guild Wars into feeling like every other MMORPG out there, which is exactly what they said it wouldn't be like.
I liked being able to go into an area, kill all the stuff and explore and loot without having to worry about the monster I just killed respawning and destroying me two minutes later while I'm in the bathroom.
And what's with the Black Lion thing? The last thing I wanted from my awesome new GW game was an extensive in game shop where people can mindlessly spend real money on pointless in game perks. Every other online game in existence already has one of those, and they are completely ridiculous.

I think the way combat itself work is a huge step away (good or bad, however you'd like to look at it) is a huge step away from the traditional MMORPG approach. You don't even have to target things to hit them.
The huge variance in playstyles within professions is another huge thing, imo. Dagger/Dagger Elementalist is completely different than Staff Ele.
Arcane Mages (WoW example sorry) play pretty similarly to Fire Mages and Ice Mages. You stand where you need to stand with the other ranged and do your rotation while managing your mana.
DD Ele can be a damage soaker, or a burst caster that weaves in and out of combat depending on CDs; Staff can play heavy support or heavy ranged nuke/aoe.
That's a huge step away, in my opinion at least in the PvE department. The way Events work is another. The way the world itself is alive and changing to an extent; Bandits attack farm, if the pipes break you have to defend them while they're fixed, etc.
There isn't really any type of questing system that does this in WoW, EQ, SWTOR, or any of the like. It feels more like an off-the-rails Western RPG rather than a railed JRPG. While it's not exactly as free form as ES when it comes to questing it's definitely closer to them on a gradient, made even moreso by the downleveling system.
As for respawns. Yeah, that might be a problem. I don't think it takes away from the game, though. I think that's pretty common in most MMOs you'll find. It would've been neat, however, if there were personal Dungeon type things you could do; Quests / Events in a single player dungeon without respawns, to give a throwback and nod to GW1.
But i think they wanted to make sure that the game stayed social and alive and vibrant. That's probably why they got rid of that. They don't want the game to be a solo experience (ala SWTOR) they want you talking and working with people from the get go; I think they accomplished that.
I think they really put the MMO back into MMORPG. They made cooperation much more of a boon rather than a burdern with their systems.
How often have you quested with someone in WoW and not gritted your teeth because they needed 1-more of something or forgot to pick up a quest at a hub or are lagging behind. Generally questing with people in WoW is a huge anchor around your neck. There's really no such thing as GW2. Everyone can do whatever you're doing at generally do it just as fast as you.
Some of the Heart quests can be annoying to do with people, but they're pretty good at sharing progress between players, i think.

The aesthetics shop is the price you pay (or rather DONT pay) for not having to subscribe. I'll gladly spend my 15 dollars a month on something aside from being able to continue to play a game i rightfully own a copy of if it means having to look at people doing dances i've never seen before and running around with silly hats and aviators.
I never played GW1 but i think the thing that makes GW1 and GW2 feels like a cohesive franchise is the in dept Guild and social system they've implemented in both games. I mean, GUILD is part of the name? (Correct me if i'm wrong, again, i never played GW1, but it seems to me like Guilds were a central focus in that game)
As for my personal criticisms with the game:
Holy Mother of God underwater combat is awful. Mobs just do NOT move well underwater. Between having to redo my personal story quest 4 times because the quest NPC following me around got caught in the wall and disappeared, and from be pushing random mobs out of the world through a wall and between mobs randomly swimming out of the wall i'm pretty sick of it.
Also Melee underwater just feels awful. Absolutely awful. I'd say a lot of has to do with how the camera reacts. I am NOT looking forward to any underwater Dungeon until they fix the way mobs behave.
Also Norn hitboxes are broken. That probably doesn't help the way fish fight me, either.
I won't bother going into a diatribe about it though, i think I am a minority. I wouldn't have minded GW1 all over again with updated graphics and larger/more elaborate instances.
I agree! I feel like I would have just wanted more of the same, but I'm also loving GW2.
Its all about perception. My GW1 Necro Vala was a hero in my eyes. She went onto be a captain in the Ebon Vanguard after the events of GW1 and settled in Vabbi in her later years. There she adopted a family of orphan children and they all took the name Valasson or Valasdotter to honor her. Any class can be a hero. Grenth isn't seen as evil, despite being the god of death, so there is no stigma for being a necromancer.
I do wish that there was the option to worship Dhuum was open though. Just for lolz. I never killed the guy so he could still be in the Underworld...waiting.

I almost killed Dhuum, and then one of my heroes died and started spamming encase skeletal and then they swarmed us and we lost

The trick to that is to look for blurry spots around the edges (or the center if you're bad). The vast majority of the time a missed point of interest or heart quest is in that area because they won't show up on the minimap until a scout shows you the area or you visit it yourself.
I hit 80 today and decided to hop into some world vs world. While I was there I managed to find the one set of armor that I really wanted. I was super bummed when I learned that you couldn't craft the soldier's prefix (power, toughness, vitality). Fortunately you can still get it in pvp. It just happens to cost 95k karma.
I'm really enjoying my guardian. The class is really fun but I find the general lack of a good ranged weapon to be extremely frustrating. The staff is clunky and doesn't do good dps and the scepter's AA is absolute garbage with how slow it moves. Against anyone with half a brain the scepter is almost completely useless but you still need to bring it so that you can range down their oil traps.
I'm finding more and more that hammer/sword&shield is really powerful for stickig to people. My biggest complaint about that, though, is that dodge rolls give you stability so you can roll right through the wall. Most people don't know that and you can get a good use out of the ward but against someone that know's their stuff the ward is useless.

I had a problem getting the last one in Queensdale myself. Have you done the heart that is in the lake at the base of the Shire of Beetletun? That was the one that got me. It is really close to there however it doesn't appear until you actually get down by the lake, the questgiver is on the docks at said lake.

Today I learned that the fuller your bar is when you are in the necromancers death shroud, the more damage your primary attack does.
I got a trophy for extreme overkill earlier when a rabbit got in my line of fire and took 7000 damage; I'm only level 25.
On track with everyone else: I haven't actually had any problems getting my areas 100% clear yet, but then again I was already a dedicated cartographer and vanquisher in GW, and now I get to do that AND compulsively hunt down every single harvestable material I can find on a map.
As for armor, I haven't liked any of the skins I have seen yet for necro, and they all cover up the gloves so I cant use any of my special skins for my gauntlets to full effect. Also I've been using the necros signet that has an AoE revive to great effect. Coming from GW it's a really strange feeling to mass rez people as a necromancer. Strange, yet satisfying.
I love being a glass cannon as an Ele. I decimate all that comes before me but die to removal quite easily. Prayer to Kormir has become my best friend. I haven't tried any dungeons yet but only because I haven't discovered any yet. I have found little events just walking around though. Yesterday I went into a cave looking to mine a node there and ended up killing a ton of bandits and two imprisoned trolls! There was a chest at the end and I got my current staff from it.
I'm excited to see what I can do in this game. I really want to visit the Wizard Tower we first saw when we killed Garlath and his minions in GW1. It doesn't appear to be on the map yet I saw it in Wizard's Fief. Also, I want to find Sorrow's Furnace, see if I can fight the doppelganger again in the Crystal Desert, and see my old pal Ogden Stonehealer.

Some of the Heart quests can be annoying to do with people, but they're pretty good at sharing progress between players, i think.

Making my sweet way through the content, loving it.
I agree! I feel like I would have just wanted more of the same, but I'm also loving GW2.

Whether it's a comedy or a tragedy, if there is cheering, the story will continue on.

I had a problem getting the last one in Queensdale myself. Have you done the heart that is in the lake at the base of the Shire of Beetletun? That was the one that got me. It is really close to there however it doesn't appear until you actually get down by the lake, the questgiver is on the docks at said lake.

That's the one, found it earlier today.
