Even though the game hasn't been released yet, the game has been passed around like candy. Myself, and five friends that played the original all have a copy, and I recently got two additional ones to hand out to my friend from college and younger brother.
Straight to the point: Who actually played the original, or has DOTA 2 and plays on steam? Anyone that wants to discuss anything can.
I have DotA2, played the original, played HoN for a little bit, and even play a bit of League. Look up the tag Misha with a picture of John Cleese and add me if you want to play some games.

Netcodes kinda buggy, the interface isn't very intuitive and the champ selection is bad,
Granted, its in closed beta at the moment, but other basic problems like the graphics. It looks like the a less polished version of one of the recent HOMM games and the faux personalities they've drummed up to replace the WC3 characters are just... not as good as the stuff that Riot's done for the lol characters, plus the art direction for lol trumps Dota 2's

Yeah, the idea that DotA's art direction would be handled by the same people who did Team Fortress 2 did not sit well for me and continues not to. So much better placed in Warcraft III...
Having said that, I love the character of Axe in this new one.

I prefer dota2 to lol in every way opposite to what you said other than the interface; it needs work atm. Most of Dota2's lore was already made in DotaAS, they just have to make their own voices instead of using WCIIIs. (Why is lore a big deal for a MOBA game, anyway?)

I tried out Dota for a little while before returning to LoL. There were just too many things that I didn't like or thought league did better.
1. The only hero I enjoyed playing was Skeleton King. Every other hero was either boring (Tidehunter) or needlessly complex (Invoker) or boringly, complex.
2. The graphics were bad and grainy and it was hard at times to tell what was what. And there were several times that I had trouble telling one thing from another. It doesn't help that everything is in drab colors which causes things to blend more.
3. The interface was awful, and things like the shop were a pain to use compared to LoL. Also smartcast never worked.
4. The map is too large and I really hated not having the ability to blue pill home at any time.
5. Matchmaking was horrible, took around five minutes to get a match, and I kept randomly getting weird gameplay modes.
6. A lot of the heroes seemed to have anti-fun elements in them such as Riku who every time I almost killed him he would go invisible or he would come up behind me and kill me while I was low. Also Riku is like in every game which was really, really annoying. I dislike Eve and Twitch, but hate Rikumaru.
Overall I couldn't really find anything that I could point to and say that League of Legends is worse in that field other than item diversity. Though chopping down trees was kinda neat it got old fast.
A lot of the heroes seemed to have anti-fun elements
which riot has managed to keep out i think. once they get the stealth rework done twitch and eve will be viable again. i think it is just taking longer than what they thought.
riot does have a anti-fun policy. which most people see as boring, but at the same time i think it does improve game play.
1. The only hero I enjoyed playing was Skeleton King. Every other hero was either boring (Tidehunter) or needlessly complex (Invoker) or boringly, complex.
"The only hero that wasn't totally boring was the hero with only one active" ... huh? Invoker is the most complex hero, and he used to be even more so with 27 spells instead of just 10.
2. The graphics were bad and grainy and it was hard at times to tell what was what. And there were several times that I had trouble telling one thing from another. It doesn't help that everything is in drab colors which causes things to blend more.
I think your graphic settings were set low, because the visuals on my computer for dota2 are fantastic.
3. The interface was awful, and things like the shop were a pain to use compared to LoL. Also smartcast never worked.
What's the major difference between LoL and Dota2 interface? I play both and I can't find anything too troublesome.
4. The map is too large and I really hated not having the ability to blue pill home at any time.
"I wish every character had a build in teleport." Are you also one of the camp who think Flash wasn't a mistake on Riot's part? Regardless, TP scrolls are sold in the main shop and the side shops. Always have one on you.
5. Matchmaking was horrible, took around five minutes to get a match, and I kept randomly getting weird gameplay modes.
Beta complaint, and you can turn these modes off.

Riki is honestly one of the weakest carries in the game because he's countered for 600g. Pros never touch this character in tournament play.

Er, League borrows most of its general concepts from DotA 1, which pretty much began it all. Dota 2 is almost literally just an upgrade of DotA 1. Also, League has been live for over a year, and DotA 2 is in closed beta... If technical issues that every beta game faces are your complaints, then you should hold out until the game has more time to develop.

1. The only hero I enjoyed playing was Skeleton King. Every other hero was either boring (Tidehunter) or needlessly complex (Invoker) or boringly, complex.
You don't have to use invoker's 10 spells. He only really needs cold snap, ghostwalk, summon elementals, meteor, and the tri attack (can't remember the name). I would say those are the core, depending on what your trying to do, but the fact that he has sooo many other options is what makes him amazing. But he is only as complex as you try to make him.
3. The interface was awful, and things like the shop were a pain to use compared to LoL. Also smartcast never worked.
Shops were much easier if you know your hot keys.
4. The map is too large and I really hated not having the ability to blue pill home at any time.
Teleport scroll.
5. Matchmaking was horrible, took around five minutes to get a match, and I kept randomly getting weird gameplay modes.
If you play it again, try changing your setting. If you put done more areas your willing to play in, it cuts down on match making time by a lot. It also might have been a bad time to play.
And Riki? Gem, wards, dust, cut his farm. Dead/useless Riki. People use it because public games rarely see the use of wards or gem and never pay attention to who they're laning against.
Don't forget the many heros that mess with him, inlcuding Bounty Hunter, Slardar, and any charecter with a great silence.
My favorite heros are Windrunner, Enigma, and Life Stealer. The latter two for their abilities to jungle, and Windrunner because of her combination of abilities.
I don't see why everyone always says Skeleton King is boring. What makes him fun is that he only has one active so you have to use a lot more strategy to play him. Plus his ult is great because if you play it right you never die.
As for the graphics I doubt it is on my computer since I have a top of the line computer (Alienware 17x). And every other game I run has great graphics. The only one I have problems with is Dota 2 where everything looks like it is out of an old N64 game and is all drab and hard to differentiate.
As for teleport scrolls I am not a fan of how you have to buy something to teleport back to base. As for the map being too large, if you don't have a teleport scroll it takes a long time to get from one place to another, or to get back to your lane. If you want to have any sort of map mobility in Dota you need a teleport scroll.
Also I love flash in LoL, you can do so much fun stuff with it. The problem always was it was too strong compared to other summoners, and that people don't like that it can save you from being killed. It doesn't technically fit any definition of anti-fun. Also blink dagger.
The fact that I have to learn hotkeys to have an easier time using the shop sort of proves my point that the shop interface is poorly designed.
As for the interface everytime I turned on smartcast it prevented me from using any my skills. Also my item hotkeys never seemed to work no matter how many times I checked them or changed them. Plus the targeting system is awful as I can't tell you how many times I wanted to click on one thing and ended up clicking the thing right next to it.
The heros are alright, but my main complaint is about the usability and the fact that the graphics make everything hard to differentiate even after I've played around with my color settings and brightness.
[COLOR=darkslategrey]I don't see why everyone always says Skeleton King is boring. What makes him fun is that he only has one active so you have to use a lot more strategy to play him. Plus his ult is great because if you play it right you never die.
I never said he was boring, just find it strange that SK is the only hero you think is fun. There are much more "fun" heroes in DotA 2. (Also, what strategy? You get an early soul ring and you stun as much as possible. There is no strategy to SK at all.)
As for the graphics I doubt it is on my computer since I have a top of the line computer (Alienware 17x). And every other game I run has great graphics. The only one I have problems with is Dota 2 where everything looks like it is out of an old N64 game and is all drab and hard to differentiate.
Maybe you need glasses.
Check your settings. The game is gorgeous to me. Perhaps a little dark, but I've never had a problem differentiating between units/terrains.

If you want to have any sort of map mobility in Dota you need a teleport scroll.
This is not really true. The map is bigger but you run faster in DotA than in LoL. Also, TP scrolls are a skill tester, and the money scaling of creep kills to item costs has been balanced to make spending money non-issue on them, if you can farm.
Also I love flash in LoL, you can do so much fun stuff with it. The problem always was it was too strong compared to other summoners, and that people don't like that it can save you from being killed. It doesn't technically fit any definition of anti-fun. Also blink dagger.
I think flash is the biggest mistake Riot has made with League. They even admitted it. The fact that every character in the game can start with blink without any gold investment is stupid. Blink Dagger costs 2150, gives no stats, and cannot be used within 3 seconds of a tower or enemy hero hitting you with anything. People get away with mispositioning all the time because of flash. Ganks become, "Well, at least we got his flash." When every character can terrain hop, there's a problem.
I hate it. I avoid using flash as much as possible, but sadly it's too good not to use 95% of the time, even after the nerf.
The fact that I have to learn hotkeys to have an easier time using the shop sort of proves my point that the shop interface is poorly designed.
Um, you can change the layout of the shop to show all items of one category in the entire window. No argument there.
As for the interface everytime I turned on smartcast it prevented me from using any my skills. Also my item hotkeys never seemed to work no matter how many times I checked them or changed them. I don't use smartcast in DotA, so I wouldn't know about it's failings, but I've had 0 issue with hotkeys. How long ago did you play? Also, beta complaint.
The heros are alright, but my main complaint is about the usability and the fact that the graphics make everything hard to differentiate even after I've played around with my color settings and brightness.
Usability? Every hero in DotA is usable. We'll have to agree to disagree on the graphics, I think it looks amazing and have no issue whatsoever differentiating between anything.

I do have glasses (and just got a new pair two months ago). The only other eye condition that I have that could cause this is that I have trouble differentiating between green and grey (for example my text color looks green to me, despite people and the tooltip saying it is grey).
I don't use smartcast in DotA, so I wouldn't know about it's failings, but I've had 0 issue with hotkeys. How long ago did you play? Also, beta complaint.

I didn't mean hero usability, but gameplay usability.
I have my item hotkeys set to 1-6, they reset once after a patch, but that's it. Not being able to differentiate gray and green is an issue with this game, so it's probably just you.
I don't know what gameplay usability means.
