Even post-semi-recent nerf, Kass is still very good (most would say he was the best caster in game before them).
He's impossible to chase and decently hard to kill even if you can stick him, then he's got a great poke (with silence), can chase well, and has a strong aoe.
I played him a lot when he was free and will probably buy him next after Lux, or maybe first.
Rune builds vary dramatically but most are a mix of some kind of damage stat and some defensive one (usually people go with vitality runes for defense).

"Virtue, Jacques, is an excellent thing. Both good people and wicked people speak highly of it..."
I took (and am still taking) another break from MTG. The reason was league of legends . I'm level thirty and I can play quite a lot of characters, though I don't like how ranked has so many more tryhards and ragers than normal.
I love the jungle, it's pretty dynamic and involves a lot of counter-jungling, ganking, and buff securement.
Out of curiosity, what kind of Masteries/Runes do you use for different styles of characters? For Tanks, do you do Health/Armor/H Regen? Do you even bother with damage?
Also, what do you guys think of Kassadin?
First off, all characters need damage or they will end up with 0 presence mid game. This essentially leads to people tanking them and killing their tower without help. In team fights, not having damage can be a major detriment to the team - not just talking about carry damage but poking, counter-poking, and sustainability inside the actual lane.
I have 10 different rune pages, 7 pages for various laning rune builds and 3 for various jungling rune builds. For example, with tanks I run 1/21/8 masteries, taking improved exhaust, with armor or magic pen reds, flat armor yellows, magic resist per level blues, and either HP or movespeed quints (oh my god they're amazing).
Kassadin, once you get used to managing your mana, is one of the best magic carries in the game. His ability to escape, burst, hard CC, makes him extremely dangerous to play against. Good kassadins wait until the tanks initiate and absorb the CC's before ulting in, dropping their combo (rqer), and getting out.

Jungling is the act of killing the neutral creeps in the jungle between your lanes. Doing so entails high risk and even higher reward. Each camp gives varying amounts of xp, gold, and respawn times. Certain characters are really good in the jungle but have a terrible lane presence, the converse is also true because some great laners are god awful in the jungle.
Jungling basically gives your team three advantages:
1. two solo lanes in which to gain faster xp. (if your name is olaf you get three solo lanes - he jungles that fast)
2. one permanently "mia" character that is free to gank lanes of opportunity to gain advantage.
3. better buff and dragon/baron control (smite)
Carries are characters that basically farm up a lot and then produce so much damage with their builds that they can essentially "carry" the team on their backs if needed. Ashe, Corki, and Master Yi are good examples. They start off very fragile but if they get big and beefy their damage is so amazing that they can melt the other teams face (provided they are smart and protected).

I've heard Twitch was free the week he was released and all hell broke loose.
I'm happy too, I tried him out with a lolbuild and ended up going like 10-3-23, will def try him more. Why must all my favorite champs be 6300 IP...
I tried blitz too. Ran TT 3 times with a friend playing Xin and another playing Heimer.
You will never ever know how fun it is to Q into 2 beefy Heimer turrets, pop up, have xin's pop up go off after, cripple and overdrive (if they aren't dead yet lol) - without trying it. Words cannot describe it.
I'm trying to find a good build for Singed. I started playing with him last night - and while he's hilarious I keep going like 4-4-6. A friend suggested a more bulky build where I go with Force of Nature over Nashor's Tooth, so I plan on trying that out.
Noc is OP. But the minute I buy him, he goes free to play. Figures.
In an eight player game, is anything good? Don't you just sit there countering combos until someone genesis waves for 42 after all the blue players tap out fighting over a bribery?
Champions go free two weeks after they are released - ie.: when the next champion gets released. Jarvan was free when Nocturne was released.
Also, Twitch has only been free once before because of the extremely large amount of grief that he caused his last free week. Twitch and eve have the ability to singlehandedly ruin games for either their teammates or their opponents. Kayle ult + twitch ult used to be a 2 man pentakill before they neutered it.

Mana crystal + 2 hp pots to start. Rush a catalyst the protector - you need it before level 6.
catalyst
boots
force of nature/rod of ages
rod of ages/force of nature
boots upgrade
situational defensive items.
Oh, and rylai's crystal scepter on singed is so hilarious. The poison proc's the slow off every cloud.

Then again, I found out the hard way that the jungling build I tried does not work without high level masteries and runes was behind on levels for the whole game.
Nocturn seriously isn't OP. Ulti is VERY strong, other skills and hp are very average and even below.
Basically, Nocturne has to get fed in order to be a threat after the laning phase. If he doesn't he either won't have enough damage or will die extremely quickly.

This man speaks the truth. RoA is an amazing item on him. Sometimes I will get boots early on him, just because he can be extremely potent in the laning phase with Fling. I would completely avoid AS/AD items on him. Gas your opponents, snare, and toss them around while soaking up damage for your team.
So do people actually ever get banned for intentionally leaving games? I was playing against someone the other night that raged in all chat and then intentionally quit around the 20 minute mark when his team wouldn't surrender. Afterwards, he was marked as a leaver. He was level 30 with 450-some wins and 150 leaves. How do you leave 150 games with no action taken against your account?

What is "HP Pots"? You just mean the Ruby Crystal thingy right?

hp pots are under consumables. You use them to give you extra regen for a short period of time.

If you play ranked the wards are a necessity, health pots are mostly used at beginning of game to drain money down + for laning phase, and elixirs are cool if you happen to pop in and have extra money, usually worth it if you dont need a ward.

I will post my LoL Quick Guide Bible tomorrow. Its an easy reference guide of builds found on Leaguecraft rated excellent/great for each champ up to Maokai.
Normally go Frozen Heart if heavy melee or Banshee's Veil if heavy AP, but we were just raping so I tried Tiamat for teamfights. It was pretty funny.
Edit: Last game I managed to pull this off along with selling Doran's for a Phantom Dancer and then later every pot, used in succession, then a Trinity Force. Luls ensued.

What's involved in 'Jungleing'?
What is a 'carrier' and 'carry damage'?
You do not win the lane against Kassadin after six unless your name is Annie.
