Nice win streak with Soraka. Most of the ones I see are horrible, but the good ones are really annoying/life saving depending on which side they're on. My best are probably Katarina, Kennen, and Nunu. Others I play often include Ashe, Miss Fortune, Sivir, Galio, and I'm learning to play Nocturne.
I play Ashe, Annie, and Malphite mostly. I'm buying runes for ashe because I'm convinced she's one of the best carries in the game.

It's free to play. Each week there is a set of about ten free champs that you can play that week. Otherwise you unlock champs using influence points (IP) that you earn by playing games. You can use money if you want to buy skins or get a character immediately instead of waiting to earn enough IP.
I stopped playing because I was too addicted to it (around 1,000 games played over 8 months). My main was Mundo. I don't even remember who else I played it's been so long.
I'm still a noob and I never played DotA (lost my WCIII discs...), but I'm mainly playing Kayle, Kassadin, and Tryndamere. Just started to pick up Galio since he's free atm and planning on buying Vladimir once I can.
Maybe I'm just a gamer but 1000 games in 8 months doesn't sound that horrible... I mean that's like 4 a day.
I guess when you consider that it's over 8 months it's a bit worse.

Yeah, with a full time job, hour commute, then 4 long games a day? Didn't leave time for much else.
That's really funny, I just started playing yesterday.
I really like it and it quite fun. I just wish I didn't suck so bad. I think 4 kills is the best I have ever done, but it came with 11 deaths. It's like a Diablo/RTS that has you leveling every game. I was using the little mummy, but now I can't pick it any more and I don't like the ones they have this week, I can't kill anything.

Before you play a character, do a little research and get a good guide. Some good ones can be found at mobafire.com
Its just like MTG. When you lose, ask yourself "what did I do wrong?" Did they have a lot of AP champs and you didn't buy any magic resist? Did you foolishly tower dive on them early game and died without killing them? Did you not switch to fighting with your other 4 teammates after the initial laning phase was over? Ask yourself why you died after every death. Why did you chase that enemy with 10 hp left when there was only a 50/50 shot you could get the kill, but a 100% chance you were going to die? Did you have your eyes on the map to see that bottom lane was missing but for some reason you stayed overextended and pushed the tower in mid?
Play conservatively, harass the **** out of the enemy during laning so that they can't relax with a high amount of health (but remember, harassing doesn't mean you have to commit to going for the kill every time), call out when an enemy is MIA, and use teamwork. I would recommend a ranged champ that has good poking abilities. Someone like Ashe or Ryze. I've been having a lot of success with Ryze lately. Just turn smart casting on (rebind your QWER keys in the keybinding menu to smartcasting buttons) with Ryze and instead of having to press the button and then click, if you press the button while you mouseover a target it will perform the ability. Doing this, lately my enemies are always at 1 bar of health and I am almost full because they can't get near me. Even when they have to go back and heal, soon they are low health again.
Laning is all about positioning. You can deny your opponents last hits by positioning yourself so that they can't be in a good spot near your creep. Its a complicated dance that can decide games.
Oh, and try to only last hit minions. A big difference between a good and a bad player is that a good player will get most of their last hits and thus be a lot further ahead on gear than a bad player.

This block right here is the best advice to a new player there is. Don't chase. Don't overextend.
I'm not that great at the game yet but I can already say this: The game revolves around not overextending and punishing your opponents when they do. You overextend - you will die to competent players.
What he calls poking/harassing is using a medium-high damage ranged single target ability to just hit people (some of the infamous characters for this are Ashe, Cho'Gath, Katarina, and Kassadin) - if you do it to them more than they do to you, then they'll have to back up and and gain less exp and gold. And you might even kill them; however the main point is to just hit them and get back so they can't hit you. Now you've just gained a lead on them, hp wise. If you can establish lane dominance with harassing then you can let your superior exp/gold do your job for you later on.
And just remember that dying is about the worst thing that can happen to you because it stops you from getting gold/exp for a while, gives whoever killed you quite a bit of each, AND (by lessening the pressure your team can give out) essentially leeches more from your team to theirs over the time you're dead.
You earn exp just by being near stuff that dies and money just from last hitting stuff, so (early game at least) it's generally not important to be actively killing creeps, just watch out for enemy champions and soak up exp - try to keep them from doing it too but watch out for dying.
Learning that, a good build for the character(s) you play, and knowing how the other heroes work will get you a good start.
Also, probably the most helpful website that I know of is solomid.net, especially once you find a character you like to learn builds for it. Ideally you would also read about all the characters' abilities on leagueoflegends.com/champions/ just to get a rough idea of what you're up against (and who you might want to buy)... but there are kind of a lot, and it won't be quite as good as actual experience playing against them.
Oh and for a beginner, be particularly careful against Annie, Poppy, Gragas, Kassadin, Tryndamere, Blitzcrank, Master Yi, Katarina, Warwick and other people that have insane burst, strong cc, can pull you to them, can chase well, etc.
There are too many in-game mechanics. I can't explain all of them here.
But some interesting aspects of the game are the Rune Systems, masteries and summoner spells. With these, you can personalize your Champion according to your playstyle.
Just FYI, when playing soraka I choose the following masteries:
Defensive Masteries:
Healer's Mending x1
Magic Resistance x3 Armor x3
and the other hp/mana buff thing I can't remember x2
Utility Masteries:
I focus getting the last mastery - it's important when playing my Soraka - I use the heal and ghost spells alot. I also pick the Ghost buffing mastery and Greed.
Summoner Spells: Heal and Ghost (I play her the tanky-ap route, so i tend to enter the battle starcalling and healing all my mates upon taking serious aoe damage - easy turn of the tides)
Rune Set:
x9 Mark of Spell Penetration
x9 Seal of Clarity (mana regen)
x9 Glyph of Warding (magic resist)
x3 Quintessence of Fortitude (health) OR x3 Quintessence of Spell Penetration
core items: Doran Ring, Rod of Ages, Rabaddon DeathCap. (I usually choose the Boots that gives you +5 movespeed when out of combat)
And that's it.
If someone want to call me ingame to play a good game and then talk about MTG my nick name is
If you get a chance, try to build a Lich Bane in Soraka sometime in a long game. With her extremely spammable Q, you'll have Lich Bane procs all the time for huge auto-attacking damage. It's... fun, lol.

I rolled 5 D6's and got 3 fours. They must have changed the odds of getting a 4!
True Sorakas go Sunfire Cape => Abyssal, maxing Q first.
But for real, the guys at higher ratings just rush Deathcap, with a help from a few lucky picks and a Doran's ring.

I can't play this game without Smart Casting. I changed my hotkeys so that Smartcasting would be my default casting method on my second day, never looked back.
To this day I have trouble using Deathfire Grasp and such because there's no smartcast for items.

"Laning" refers to what most people will do on the early stages of the game, that is, staying on their "lane", killing minions and harassing the enemy champions.
"Creep" is the same as minion.
