Antonio Nogueira defeats Tim Silvia (1:28 Round 3 Guillotine Choke)
Frank Mir defeats Brock Lesnar (1:30 Round 1 Knee Bar)
Nate Marquardt defeats Jeremy Horn (1:37 Round 2 Guillotine Choke)
Ricardo Almeida defeats Rob Yundt (1:08 Round 1 Guillotine Choke)
Tyson Griffin defeats Gleison Tibau (Unanimous Decision)
Chris Lytle defeats Kyle Bradley (:33 Round 1 TKO)
Tim Boetsch defeats David Heath (4:52 Round 1 TKO upset)
Rob Emerson defeats Keita Nakamura (Split Decision)
Marvin Eastman defeats Terry Martin (Unanimous Decision)
Overall a very good Pay-Per-View. Silvia dominated Nogueira all 3 rounds but was swept when he was in Nogueira's guard. That was enough of a mistake for Minotauro to end the fight.
Lesnar dropped Mir twice with punches in the first minute of the fight and tossed him around like a rag doll. He looked real good in his debut, but his inexperience showed as Mir was able to catch him in a Knee Bar while Lesnar was trying to ground and pound. The fight only lasted 90 seconds, but Mir's face looked like it had been pounded on for an entire 3 rounds.
Marquardt unexpectedly dominated Horn the entire fight, landing shots at will. I don't think I've ever seen Horn perform as poorly as he did tonight. Horn eventually shot in to take Marquardt to the ground and got caught in a standing guillotine for his efforts.
The Griffin fight was fun to watch. He landed lots of leg kicks and punched his opponent repetitively. Credit to his opponent for having a solid chin or it would have been a quick fight.
Lytle took care of his opponent very quickly. He came out at the bell and just let his hands fly. He had one hand around the guys neck, and pummeled him with the other. His opponent got hit so hard that he went after the ref when the fight was stopped because he had no clue where he was.
My favorite fight of the night was probably the Boetsch upset over David Heath. It was Boetsch's first fight in the UFC and he picked Heath apart utilizing a plethora of straight kicks, punches, and several combinations of successive knees to the face (he probably ate at least a dozen knees to the jaw in his 1st round TKO loss).
Thanks for the report. I wish I could have seen it. Was dying to see Lesnar. It sounds like he has some solid potential.
Was Rob Emerson any good? Every time I've seen him fight, he's always been way too cautious. The fist thing I thought, when I saw that the match was a split decision, was 'big suprise'.

Lesnar definitely has potential. He was destroying Mir before he got caught with the knee bar. I have the feeling that once he tightens up his jujitsu skills and learns to be a bit more cautious, we're looking at a guy that could hold the Heavyweight title for a VERY long time.
Smerson actually looked pretty good in his fight. He was less cautious than usual and his striking was pretty solid. His problem in the fight was he started swinging wildly and as the fight progressed and opened himself up to a few knees that landed and a handful of takedowns. His opponent wasn't able to do any damage from there, but points are points. Nakamura also had a healthy height advantage over Emerson, which in some way probably contributed to Emerson's "wild" striking. Round 1 I would have gave to Emerson. Round 2 I would also have given to Emerson, but he got caught with a knee that dropped him, thus the judges gave Nakamura the slight edge. Round 3 I probably would have given to Nakamura. He was able to initiate several takedowns and as Emerson started to gas, he was able to successfully strike more often and effectively.

10 - Cain Velasquez defeats Brad Morris (2:10, 1st Rnd, TKO)
11 - Jonathan Goulet defeats Kuniyoshi Hironaka (2:07, 2nd Rnd, TKO)
1 - GSP totally dominated his title fight.
2 - Franklin escapes an early arm-bar attempt by Lutter and then destroys him via standup
3 - Kalib Starnes ran away the entire fight and that's the only reason it went to decision. One judge actually scored the fight 30-24. It was quite pathetic
4 - Bisping looked scary good after dropping down a weight class. He hit McCarthy with so many successive knees, it looked like he was doing the running man in the corner of the cage
5 - Pretty even fight. Bocek had a rather easy time taking Danzig down, but in the end it didn't really matter.
8 - This fight wasn't televised but it won Submission of the Night. By far the sickest submission I've seen in all my years of watching MMA. I highly recommend that anyone who likes MMA should try to find this fight and watch it. The triangle was applied from Herman's back (I don't think rear naked triangle is the appropriate term but it was insane nonetheless), not his guard, and when the ref called the fight, Herman was beyond unconscious; his eyes were rolled up in the back of his head.
Thanks for the report. That submission sounds brutal!
I really do like Rich Franklin. It is regretable that the unstoppable force has the belt (and will have it for a long time) but I really do like Sylva as well. Both are really top knotch guys, with great attitudes.
I guess thats why I wasn't too excited about this fight-night overall. I really don't like gsp very much, and I expected he would win.
As for Franklin it's prob him vs Hendo next, if Hendo doesn't switch weight classes.
I guess you could call it a fluke. I don't think anyone would question that GSP is by far the more talented fighter. Many (myself included) would say he's one of the, if not THE, best pound for pound fighter in mixed martial arts, and definitely one of the most versatile. The fight was stopped after GSP drove about a half dozen vicious knees into Serra's ribs while the two were on the ground. I wouldn't be surprised if Serra ends up pissing blood for a week.
Franklin vs Henderson eh? That's a fight I'd love to see.

Just talking about that submission doesn't do it justice. Everyone in the room was beyond annoyed that we didn't get to see that fight after seeing how it ended. I'm still struggling to keep my jaw off of the floor.
Franklin is my favorite fighter in the UFC, and his 2 matches vs Anderson were heart-wrenching. I have to wonder if he'll sack up and try a 3rd time if given the opportunity. As for "The Spider", I have to agree with you. I don't see that belt going around the waist of anyone else for quite some time.

I swear, Anderson Silva should retire, buy a costume and start fighting crime. I mean, Franklin is the best I could imagine someone being at his weight class, but then here comes the spider, just going beyond expectation. He's really something else.
I agree with you, those fights were heart-wrenching, but you could really see that both fighters respect the hell out of eachother. The type of honor they display is rare in the world, and I love to see how it surfaces in my favorite sport.

LOL....the real Spider Man!
Sure, they have a profound respect for one another, and it is indeed, very rare to find nowadays, but that didn't make either match easy for me to watch. Both were absolute massacres and that was difficult to stomach. As you said, Franklin was above and beyond the cream of the crop in that division. Then this Brazilian guy comes out of nowhere and DESTROYS every single guy they throw in front of him, Franklin included.
anderson silva is one of the most fearsome fighter in the world for his strikes were brutal and devastating. he just destroys rich franklin in the round two of their rematch with all the strikes connecting.
im glad GSP won for he really deserves to become the champion and matt serra's championship run was just a fluke with that punch out of nowhere. heck, even if matt serra fights matt hughes he will still ended up banged up and defeated.
the two best pound-for-pound fighters are in the ufc and now that really says something.

I do believe you can watch all prelimenary fights on the ufc website.
So, nice fights, no shocking results, on to #84 somewhere end of may
What did you guys think of Kenny KenFlo Florian on the mic?
I did not miss Joe Rogan one second, even though I like to hear him talk about the moves just as well.
Yes, you can watch them on UFC.com, but they weren't viewable until today. Plus you gotta pay 2 bucks per fight to watch them, but they're available now.
Overall it was one of the better events they've done recently. I just wish I could get to see all the preliminary fight since I'm shelling out $45 per event, or at least some of them. 8 aired fights would keep me content.
In regards to Florian, I really didn't pay him much attention. I was watching the NHL playoffs between fights. There's too much garbage time in between and I don't need to see/hear the same plugs over and over, but I suppose his post fight interviews were tolerable. No better or worse than Rogan usually is.
This topic does not yet discuss ToF S7. Should it?
What? Did you mean The Ultimate Fighter Season 7? If that's what you meant then I don't see why not. It doesn't have to be limited to the UFC either. Elite XC and WEC discussions would be fine as well. Maybe I should change the title of the thread to more of a MMA discussion thread.
Yes, that is what I meant, not sure how the U changed into an 'o' there..
I think sending the guy who had some rash on his neck home is total BS.
I mean, here are 16 guys who like to give brain-damage-causing blows during a fight, but they fear a little rash. Besides, that *****er Dana W. did not even give the medicine a chance. I think he just wanted to create some drama for better ratings, since all people really watch is the finals anyway, everything upto it is kinda boring. Maybe the poor fella will be back in a later season or through some backdoor or something, that would be a pretty nice turn of events if he would kick the season 7 winner's ass at UFC 102
I'm going to have to disagree with you. If it were just some rash that would heal with medicine and whatnot, then he should have let him stay, but the guy told Dana that he'd had breakouts like that before. Unfortunately for him, it will never dissipate entirely. If I'm not mistaken, the doctor classified it as a herpes simplex lesion. Thus, even with treatment, it could/would return eventually, and could therefore be transmitted to the other fighters. Dana White and the UFC would have been held legally responsible and would have been subject to lawsuits if another fighter contracted the same lesion. It sucks that the guy made it onto the show only to be sent home, but a business man has to protect himself and his product. It was just an unfortunate stroke of bad luck for the guy in question.
I totally agreed with Dana's choice. Herpes outbreaks can be controlled somewhat by modern medicine, but they can still bust out during high stress situations, which is exactly what mma is.
Sure, you risk a physical injury when you step in the ring, but no one should have to face the threat of a walking biological weapon who could give you a disease that will last till the day you die.
@Highroller - I don't know of any good links myself, but on wednesday there will be an episode of the ultimate fighter on Spike. It comes on at 10 PM I believe.
It's a competition of amature fighters trying to get into the UFC. While it would be better to see the pro's go at it, it's defnatly a decent place to start watching.
Can someone provide a link to some of these fights? I've never followed Mixed Martial arts, but it sounds fascinating to me.
As Shaharazad pointed out, if you get Spike TV, check it out Wednesday night. Pay-Per-View's are generally held once a month, with the next one being on May 24th at 10pm ET. You can use Google to see numerous matches as well. By the way, for those who still haven't seen it yet, the Maia vs Herman match from last Saturday's event can be seen @ mmascraps.com, although I was a bit off on how the fight actually ended. It was still a sick submission though.
That website also has plenty of other mma video for your viewing pleasure
I don't know, I prefer boxing over the Muay Thai/submission hybrid that they have here. I think it's a lot more entertaining when two guys are slugging each other instead of keeping their distance for fear of being kicked or grappled.
I'm guessing the striking arts don't perform well in these bouts, do they?

Unfortunately, boxing isn't like that most of the time anymore, hence the reason I'm not a fan of boxing. Boxing has turned into too much of a hugging/dancing match as opposed to a real fight. At least in MMA if you're locked up the ref doesn't break you up, and often times that grappling/clinching will lead to a vicious knee to someones skull.
I'm guessing the striking arts don't perform well in these bouts, do they?
MMA is all about match-ups. Some guys are submission/jujitsu specialists, some are wrestler/ground n pound fighters, while others are straightforward stand up fighters. The Silvia v Nogueira fight wasn't all that spectacular to watch. I could recommend some fights and/or fighters if you'd like to see a more "high octane" fight. Forest Griffin vs Stephan Bonner 1 was a spectacular fight, any fights involving Rich Franklin or Anderson Silva are pretty good. Chris Leben is a slugger and the Jon Koppenhaver vs Jared Rollins fight was tremendous. Roger Huerta & George St. Pierre are bad ass too.
It all depends on who's good at what. A jujitsu guy isn't prone to try and stand up against a guy with good hands, but he doesn't mind fighting a wrestler because the fight usually ends up on the ground where he can put his submissions to work, etc.
Tonights fight went pretty much as expected. I think "chipper" has more raw talent, but he just made too many mistakes. He needs some serious training.
I have a feeling that C.B. Dollaway is going to win it all. (He was Rampage's first pick). It's just a hunch, but he looks like a wrecking ball waiting to hit some dudes face.
I was hoping Chipper would pull it out, but Rampage was right, he had no business being on the ground with the cajun. If he had kept the fight standing, he would have moved on. While he definitely showed his inexperience, he also displayed some solid ability to build from. Another year or so of specific technique training and Chipper could make some waves.
Well it appears Chuck Lidell has torn a ligament in his hand and will therefore be unable to fight Rashad Evans as scheduled. Instead, James Irvin will take his place but the bout has been officially moved out of it's previous main event slot. Rumor has it that the new main event will feature Chris Leben Vs. Michael Bisping. I almost like the newer arrangement better than the original. Bisping vs. Leben makes for an excellent stand up battle.
